Playing Shenmue was the greatest experience of my gaming life, up until that point. I actually felt like I was Ryu. I spent hours in the arcades, and shamefully looking for sailors. :D
Shenmue was a charming game. The voice acting was pretty bad in places, and I can recall not liking getting a job carting crates around. But the music, as you said, was beautiful and the experience as a whole is something I look back on with fondness.
Thanks for making this. I really enjoy retrospectives of my face games. Also I wish the dreamcast could have lived it's whole life cycle. I wonder what great games would have come of it. Thanks again
the boat chapter was left out not because of 'time' limitation , it was left out because it would exceed the data capacity of the 4 gd rom limit that sega set for the game. by release of shenmue 2 suzuki knew that shenmue 4 was unlikely to occur so wanted to leave the series on the guilin cliffhanger rather than the rooftop fight. as it turns out it didn't really matter since shen 3 never happened anyway. but to be honest i probably prefer the guilin chapter over the boat.
Great retrospective man. The graphics of Shenmue I and II still hold up really well. In fact, I have yet to see a game more detailed than these. I can't think of a game where EVERYONE can talk you either. Yu Suzuki was a mastermind, making these timeless games.
Hardware shortages? Lolwut? The Dreamcast launch was botched in Japan because all it had going for it, was a barebones port of VF3. Not to mention the Saturn was still alive and well over there. That G4 documentary was only done in a way to paint the Dreamcast as some sort of victim.
@strykah92 there were lot's of reason and you right the saturn was still doing well and a lot of people were pissed that sega ditched the satun and pushed the dreamcast befor they were ready, and the launch line up was rubbish most likely the reason why it was launch oversees a year later with a killer line up of title's, thank you for your comment and when i do a complete video of my retrospective i will tweak that part of it.
@BFKAnthony817 thank you very much :D glade you have enjoyed the series so far and fingers crosed part 3 will be ready be the end of this week of early next week ;)
@BFKAnthony817 thank you very much :D glade you have enjoyed the series so far and fingers crosed part 3 will be ready be the end of this week of early next week ;)
In Panzer Dragoon Saga (released in 1998), every single character (even characters you see only once and have no importance to the story) has a voice, and you can even listen characters talking to each other from a distance (a detail missing in Shenmue - the characters only talk to you). Except for this little mistake, your video is awesome - and Shenmue is, indeed, one of the greatest experiences in gaming ever. I am replaying it right now.
@CervantesXV u have a very good point there :o yep u see people go about there lives but naver talking to each other just to u. your right too about panza dragoon but a lot of the chracter dont have a voice they talk in text, thank you for your comment and glade you enjoyed this vid :D
@davidhass3lh0ff In Panzer Dragoon Saga, every single dialogue is voiced - all the characters, even the minor ones, are dubbed, like in Shenmue. But then, Shenmue has much more characters. To me, these two series represent the most refined games in SEGA's history. Now, waiting for your next video!
I really wish I was more computer savvy; if I was like I said, I would make my "perfection collection" Blu Ray disc to play on a computer. Said blu ray would have games from the Genesis, SNES, N64, PS1, and Dreamcast, all consoles I played on when I was young. Be so awesome to have a "perfect collection," but a custom made one.
@stardingo747 i think u could could put every nes, ms, genesis, snes game and maybe as well every n64 game on a blu ray but u would need a few blu rays to mack up every dreamcast game worth haveing, but the perfect collection on one disc would be awesome
@AhmedHazuki he, that's worse! Although I will admit; I was fortunate enough to revisit it via emulation through chankast 2 years back, and, the story does move pretty slowly. If you're gonna move the story slowly you need more action packed sidequests, otherwise the game can get boring. Shenmue should learn from the Deus Ex; Human Revolution book. In Deus Ex the story moves at a reasonable pace AND its got interesting sidequests.
@AhmedHazuki yes I did; downloaded both ROMS for the chankast emulator. I really wish I was more computer savvy; if I was I would do my "perfect game collection." My favorites from the Genesis, all the way to the Dreamcast era, and then burn them all on a blu ray I could play on both a gaming console, as well as a computer. Said blu ray would have a universal emulator that can play games from the Genesis, PS1, N64, and Dreamcast.
@similaritiesendhere how did i hate on sega? im not a fan of modden sega because it doeset feal like the game company that mad the classics i grew up playing and it isent the same company anymore, lot's of fans of sega feel this way
Congratulations mate! Great video, I am currently working for a video retrospective of Yu Suzuki and specially of Shenmue in an Spanish game site called videoxoc.com and your videos are highly inspirational. I had doubts on the amount of information and trivia to put in the videos not to make them "fanboys" (sorry, I hate the term too) only and seeing your videos reasures me, it is cool to talk about Shenmue! Congratulations on the vids again!!!
@elclown wow thank u im glade i was able to help out :D i think shenme trainsend's everythink even fan boy's too hehe and it's one the greats of gaming that everyone can talk about.
Great video. I really love the effort you put into the production of your videos. The time taken really shows and the way you mix in the games audio with the review, superb. Great work, loved the review and looking forward to part 3 when it arrives. :)
i did put a lot of effort because shenmue is one of my all time favourites and i wanted to do it justice plus editing is a lot of fun and puting everythink together to creative somethink awesome :D. part 3 should be ready late next week or early the week after that
@davidhass3lh0ff Well you certainly did do it justice and some! Great work, can't wait for part 3. The Shenmue series on the DC were fantastic. I would love to see no.3 made for the current gen systems.
