Recently, while walking in South Seattle, I heard a loud report. The sound was too "open" to be a gunshot, so I suspected it might be a big firecracker. Strangely, a group of young girls was walking away from the noise, laughing and giddy. Unlikely candidates for M-80 hooliganism, I thought.

Moments later, I saw the source of the sound; a car had run over a basketball on busy Rainier avenue.

I don't think I'd ever heard that sound before...
