Of course Renaldo was amazing too! I just mean that Thurston was without a doubt more of the catalyst for SY's pioneering sound. He was taking apart and rebuilding his guitars with crazy switches and using weird things to pick with , alternate tunings etc and was really one of the first, if not THE first to do soo in rock music.

Anyone who doesn't see why Sonic Youth are soo highly regarded will never get it. Thurston Moore took the electric guitar to a new level the same way (if not moreso) than Hendrix did. Tom Morello and the like all are riding Thurston's coat tails. The only other person who was as innovative was Kevin Shields IMO. "Daydream Nation" and "Dirty" are my faves by S. Youth.

Listen to Glenn Branca's The Ascension sometime, on which Lee plays.

First, with all due respect to Janis, I'd put Kim slightly AHEAD of her as a vocalist and artist, and I think that history will put them on comparable levels. But I'm not going to try to win THAT debate. All I was suggesting is that there are great vocalists that would not be considered all that good in a technical sense. And I DO think Bob Dylan has a great voice and is largely considered distinctive for his voice.
