  • 1971

I bought this and Led Zeppelin II at a duty free shop in Manila

    Memories of my youth.

    Glad I have them.

  • Eh, I prefer The Who version. Much faster.

  • Awesome song! I was part of the Jesus Movement in 1971 (and I still am!) when this song came on the radio in Los Angeles, and I loved it! Trippy...

  • Went to bed thinking about this song, woke up and found it. What a great day.

  • Thunderfingers, we love you and miss you!

  • not too shabby a guitarist either

  • i'm privileged to say my grandad was the guitarist :D still feel sorry for my grandad who lost john, as he was his best friend, and an inspiration to so many

  • @tyresmoker4 I'm calling shenanigans.

  • @smitty01209 no seriously, dave 'cy' langston is my grandad. this is hardly something anyone would lie about, surely?

  • @tyresmoker4 Nope. Shenanigans on the whole best friend, bit.

  • @smitty01209 look it up on the net, it will say john was found in the hotel room dead, by cy langston, his best friend. i have a newspaper cutout of it.

  • @tyresmoker4 Any NEWSPAPER is like to exaggerate that for sake of drama. I simply would question Langston's identity as Entwistle's best friend due to years and years of nigh worshipping the man.

  • @tyresmoker4 In addition, he was found dead by the stripper he was with the previous night.

  • Gotta love that bassline with the flat sixth and fourth and all that good stuff.

  • Holy smoke. I've just heard the version from LAL for the 12345th time and it is still beyond any reasonable explanation. But this version is so cool. The Ox cant keep them fingers from racing around the fretboard, even in this slow version. He's the MAN.

  • im surprised the bass isnt alot louder.

  • @CJbass420 i see your point but it is just right if you ask me

  • que es esto tan genial...ufff

  • Everything in this album is great. The songs, the lyrics, the singing (John's voice was in great shape at this time), the basslines and brasses, the session musicians did a wonderful job at their instruments... damn, even the cover is perfect, it looks just like the album sounds.

Always a favourite of mine. Thanks to Entwistle for this masterpiece.

  • amo gli who nella loro intierezza e li stra-amo singolarmente

  • I first heard Heaven and Hell on Live At Leeds...It was revelatory. I'd heard lots of the Who's stuff..But nothing of it's caliber. The raw, energetic, spastic drumming of Keith Moon, and John laying down the melody with the fucking four stringed bass...It was a precious moment. I later listened to several other live versions of Heaven and Hell, all with that intensity...But this, this is different. It's amazing and calm; like the Ox himself.

Rest In Peace, John. You are missed.

  • I think I prefer the Live at Leeds version, but that's probably only because I heard that first. I don't know... This one is so great though.

If I ever have children, I'm gonna make them listen to this album throughout their childhood and only introduce Live at Leeds to them when they're older... to see what kind of reaction they have.

  • Terrify Blues from the OX

  • jesus,(hah, ironic when you think of the video im commenting on) the horns in this song are so eerie

  • Slow and smooth! Like John himself!!

  • smash your head against the wall = best album ever

  • What a difference from the live Who versions. I've got to get this album now.....

  • Good song.... Faulty message.

We all have eternal life. The question is, where ya going once you go through death's door?

  • @SyvetheShairks If it was that simple, everyone would be going up, no matter what.

  • @SyvetheShairks gonna find john.......

  • This tune, I believe, is my favourite off the "Smash Your Head" long player. But! ... it's kinda' spooky hearing rock & rollsters preaching exactly correct theology even if some of the finer points are obscured. I never did get used to being sermonized whilst I was "escaping reality"

Still. This was a great album. Brings back numerous memories of "sin & debauchery"

  • check out volker hinkel's version of this on youtube. just type in volker hinkel heaven and hell.

it's just a snippet but he does a really great job on it - tell him to put the whole song on youtube! lol

he shared that with me 2 years ago and i was really impressed with it.

  • Wow, this is deadly! Thanks for putting it up. I bet this is what HH would've sounded like if the Who played an unplugged show.

  • When I first head this song a few years ago, I thought it was childish and I didn't like it...But it's one of those songs that the moe you think about it, the better it gets, and it's now my favorite song.

  • What's the song talking about? It's simple. He describes the traditional notions of Heaven and Hell as ridiculous and childish superstitions. So is this just an anti-Christian (or anti-religious) song? Nope. Throwing away those cliches doesn't solve the problem of death. We all want to live forever, but too bad, we all die. Why??? If one answer to that is unacceptable, where can you find one that is? The longing for answers remains.

  • Thanks for sharing the song!

  • Another John's great song, but I don't like the lyrics at all. But there's no doubt, John was a good songwriter...

  • from a fellow Entwistle fan to another just out of curiosity what's wrong with the lyrics their genius

  • It's just my opinion, O.K? I don't think it's his best work, like a lot of people say so, talking about lyrics. If you just compare it with Whiskey Man, My Wife, The Quiet One, 905, Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, The Real Me, The Size and Success Story I think you will understand what I'm talking about.

  • the real me is by townshend :P

all the quadrophenia album has been written by pete

  • What this song is about anyhow? A parody of the Chistianity's beliefs? A cry in despair? I just don't think it works quite well (the lyrics), like the songs I have mentioned and the Townshed's work in the Who. I dont know much about John' solo career, just the album Smash Your Head Against The Wall.

But I admire John Entwistle and all the others Who's members, I love all their songs and I didn't want offend anybody.

  • Well, I tried to express my feelings the best I could because I'm brazillian and my English isn't quite good. Maybe that´s the reason I think the lyrics are childish, I can't understand its complexity because I ain't familiarized with the language quite well.

  • no need to get upset just asking??

  • I ain't upset, I just tried to explain the best as possible because the last thing I want is argue with a Entwistle's fan. By the way, you're a Who' fan too? Which is your favorite song? And Entwistle's?

  • Entwhistle like G. Harrison wrote for his band only few songs but they were all great and darker than the usual stuff

  • @abebg I agree and it is the honest truth. The Entwistle Ox proved a great songwriter of all great songs.

  • @abebg I agree and it is the honest truth. Entwistle The Ox proved a great songwriter of all great songs.

  • typical tommy style, but they're right it's better on live at leed or isle of wight

  • it's a diferent melody, I like that

  • I prefer the live version on Live at Leeds! That rocks!!!

  • sounds great, but i personally prefer the Who's versoin

  • YAY JUHN!!!!!!!!!!

  • This verison is better than the one he did with The Who.

  • your crazy

  • You mean. "You're"

  • oh fuck

  • Good song but a much better live version on the wolfgangs vault live music website from the Ox Band concert in 1975 in Philly.

  • Thanks a hundred for putting this up!!
