@girly10az They certainly can. I find my blue and gold to be easier to train than my neighbors labrador!
She spreads her wings on command, waves goodbye complete with sound, gathers blocks in a box or takes them out on command, and she is starting to pick up on the names of colours.
@KrazyKurd05 Never think of such birds in the matter of cost alone. What will cost you more than money, is time you need to spend with them and the sort of dedication it takes to care for a parrot. Parrots from a rescue shelter can be fairly inexpensive, versus buying from a breeder. But overall, just remember that they can sometimes require more attention than a cat or dog, are considerably louder and can become very aggressive.
Unfortunately there are so many of these birds for adoption. I adopted my bird. I am caring for it now and giving as much time and care as possible. If the damage is done, all we can do is adopt and care. What else? at least I will not breed mine.
''All exotic birds for sale are bred from specimens illegally trapped''
depends what you meen by this... yes originally they would have been in the UK, like pythons, turtles etc.. what are not native to britain
however, the majority of macaws bred are now captive bred and from reputable breeders...dont be discouraged from buying one what has been captive bred...although they are hard to look after and a BIG commitment so doing so should not be taken lightly
Please do not think about buying an exotic bird. All exotic birds for sale are bred from specimens illegally trapped abroad and smuggled into the country under hellish conditions. Exotic birds live decades and cost tens of thousand of dollars to keep. The only responsible way to acquire an exotic bird is through a bird rescue. They can tell you if you have the financial and social resources to care for a bird.
You make some good points, although I can't say I agree with all of them. While it's true, birds were trapped abroad, that's true no longer. They've really cracked down on animal smuggling.
All responsible breeders and owners will only buy and breed from captive bred. They can live for over 50 years. And they do cost a lot. Bird rescues are not always the best place to go and not the best place to start if you have no experience.
Think of birds like children. It's expensive, and a lifetime commitment. If you can't handle children, I doubt you can handle a macaw. I have a baby Hahn's, who's a mini macaw and more work than a 2 year old. Having said that, he's a wonderful companion who's brought so much joy and love into my life. I couldn't imagine life without him.
Rather than telling everyone that everything's evil about bird breeding, encourage them to learn and think things through carefully.
"All exotic birds for sale are bred from specimens illegally trapped abroad and smuggled into the country under hellish conditions."
What a crock. Most birds, nowadays, are from domestically-raised birds who were born into captivity, at least here in the U.S. To make a blanket statement like that is not only wrong, it's also inflammatory.
Yes, do your research. These birds are expensive to purchase and maintain. Remember, tho', not ALL rescues are good, and not all breeders are irresponsible.
Sweet! Rationalization par excellence here: 'Because a bird's parents and grandparents were specifically born in captivity that bird is not bred from contraband.' And, "Because some rescues suck, it's ok to give money to someone that is intentionally breeding a wild animal for the leisure and entertainment of people in their homes.'
Again, ALL exotic birds are bred from contraband and ALL breeders are... if not irresponsible... responsible.
the exotic bird trade is not going to stop, now, i'd rather have the certainty of having a loved bird at home, rather than having a caged bird outside of home, if you only buy from reputable breeders, than you can be sure that the birds are not being abused.
The bird was great! The owner was the one who was "Pathetic". I think the guy's lines could have been written a little better, but the bird was great!
