Hi, my canary is making clicking sounds and it's very low sound and he's quiet puffed up. Ive applied him Beaphar Anti-parasite spot on which is a drop that is for all the type of mites, parasites etc. he's now cleaning himself as he is annoyed by it, I've washed his whole cage including accessories. I just need to know what else I can do and how to get rid if it because I've warmed up my room and covered his cage with a white blanket. Any other advice please ? Thanks
If abdomen swollen, serious health challenges if not about to lay egg. Feel gently for egg keeping canary in perching upright position. If no egg moisten skin and see if liver dark red extends from under sternum into abdomen. It shouldn't be visible. If enlarged liver disease, feel for cancer in abdomen, eg a lump of mass . Shine bright light into abd to see if full of fluid ascites otherwise ? oviduct disease,
Hi, i´m trying to find out what is wrong with my canary, she has lost some feathers and she sits on the bottom of her cage puffed up and panting. i have taken her to my vet he says its a vitamin deficiency and gave me drops to put in her water for a week which ive done and i´m applying a cream to her skin every 2 days to help with the regeneration of feathers but she still seems sick to me and its been a week now. any advice please? Thanks.
@claireloveskittens I feel a 2nd opinion on basis of physical exam and throat and faecal wet and Gram stained smears by an AVIAN vet is indicated. I have not used any creams in nearly 40 years to regnerate feathers and I feel there are other issues other than a vitamin deficiecny. Moulting is normal in late summer thru to March Arpil in Australia, but not sick bird look on floor of cage panting. Is abdomen concave or convex, pectoral muscles concave or convex, urates white yellow or green or wet
@DoctorRossPerry hi thanks for your answer i will seek second opinion...abdomen is rounded, pectoral not sure will check when i get her out tomorrow, and check the poop then too.... i live on a small island in the canary islands (funnily enough) off the west coast of africa so doubt there will be a avian vet is available buy will find out..thanks for your help so far
@DoctorRossPerry Hi just to say thanks for your advice, I took my bird to the vets and they gave me antibiotics... told me to go back on monday... on monday morning she still hadnt improved, so I was going to take her back and ask them perhaps it would be kinder to put her down, she looked so ill... but sadly she died.. which is really sad... but i guess she is flying in heaven now.
@claireloveskittens Sorry to hear that. Please google Dr Ross Perry and check my various websites esp aboutcanarieshealth and drrossperry before getting another canary or better still contact me to buy Caring for Birds with Love and Gratitude book.

thanks for the answer i have a question i have a canary but lately hes scatching alot ..i dont know what wrong with him could he have some lice or something else an how do i get rid off them ..thank you for your time ..and i hope one day i get to travel there and enjoy all your nature ...
@hugocasarrubias If there are lice or mites you can usually see them when using a magnifying lens. Put his cage on a white cloth and/or put a white cloth in his cage before dusk. Then about 2 -4 hours after dark turn light on and quickly examine white cloths for tiny mobile dots, eg red mite. If his legs are excessively scaly he might have scaly mite. If none of the above he might be ready to moult. Lots of mights and perhaps some mites but often other causes eg heavy metal poisoning from rust
@hugocasarrubias Sydney has a beautiful coastline with about 16 beaches on north side from Shelly Beach to Palm Beach, each divided by headlands with lots of views like this one looking north to Mona Vale Beach. The South side also has its share of famous beaches such as Bondi and Coogee.
Thank you
