Isn't being a Christian about helping one another without an expectation of getting something in return. Doing true acts of kindness for the mere feeling it gives you inside?? If you are correct, then GOD is a cruel and heartless tyrant who murders his own children because they misbehaved a few times. If you gave a child a bowl full of candy bars and a bowl full of Brocolli and said now do the right thing. Do you expect the bowl full of candy to be untouched? do you kill that child????

However, I have also heard the same songs ruined by rock beats that drown out the meaning and power of the song. I find this version to be calming rather than drab. But I suppose it depends on what you're used to.

When I was a boy I attended a church that insisted on solemnity with beaufiful music from the choir and beaufiful words from the pulpit. Fast forward...the church now has loud guitar music and even louder drums. I left the church when I lost my faith. I was invited to an Easter service and went back to the church after many years. The person who invited me did not warn me to wear hearing protection...the noise made me stagger from the sanctuary. At least there is YouTube. Thanks!

a little historical note on this: D.L.Moody loved this hymn-melody so much that he told Thompson (author and musician) as he lay dying that he would rather have written it than have done anything else.

As a baby I was nursed to sleep by my grandmother rocking me and singing this hymn. That was 75 years ago, and I have always loved it. I have never heard it sung more beautifully. Thank you. So many of these Gospel hymns have been left out of modern hymn books because it is felt that they are too emotional and sentimental. But how can we embrace the love of Jesus without emotion?
