highspeed oval was build for such kind of races to make it popular in germany and connected countries, it was the first and last oval race in germany and i was onsite, it was spectactular!!!! until horrific crash of zanardi
what I've always been curious about this incident is what caused him to lose control of the car. Coming out of the pits at low speed you'd hardly expect a top driver to spin out onto the track in front of cars going at top speed. So what caused it to happen? Did he run over something? A mechanical failure that caused the car to turn suddenly? I've never heard anything about it and it wasn't caught on the video.
@Hynee Wasn't cold tires, it was a fuel only stop. Flat spotted tires is most likely cause since he locked up the wheels slowing coming into the pits.
A day before he said in an interview to a dutch reporter: "Im afraid of losing my leg(s) or getting paralized." I read it and i just couldn't believe it.
@Doublespazer Yeah his feet and lower legs were sheared off with the nosecone...he had to have all his lower legs amputated. Now he has his normal upper legs and prothesis from the knee to the feet. And still raced in Wtcc winning at least one race.
He was also allowed to drive a CART car again @ this Lausitzring track as a tribute, to complete the 17 laps he was missing to complete and win this race he was leading.

The words of the link man in the end were very moving and respectful. He found the right words to explain the chanel's decision to stop the live television.
@lonchi95 The presenter explained that they'd broadcast the race in line with the Americans' wishes, following what happened on September 11th, although they feared that something bad would happen and the TV audiences would have to watch more tragedy, as a part of the dangerous sport of motoracing. Because the crash was obviously bad, the TV station took the decision to end the live broadcast.

2001 is probably one of the most depressing years ever. Death of Dale Earnhardt, Alex Zanardi's almost fatal crash, 9/11 etc. At least times are better now after a decade of these terrible tragedies.
Notice how they didn't do a close up on the crash, nor did they stay with it very long. Cutting to a view of the grandstands, the rest of the field, and then only showing Zanardi's car once the safety team was on the scene. such a horrible week.

Ja, hat er. Hat aber beide Beine unterhalb des Knies verloren. Hat dann 1 oder 2 Jahre später die Runden in einem modefiziertem Rennwagen (aber immer ein Champ Car Wagen) vollendet. Seine Zeiten hätten für eine Top10 Platzierung in dem Jahr locker gereicht. Stattdessen hat er anschließend bei den Tourenwagen mitgefahren (auch da mit modefiziertem Wagen). Hat sogar 2 oder 3 Siege davon getragen bevor er aus dem Rennsport geschehen ausgestiegen ist.
@juxhin000 Water. They spray water on the entrance of the fueltank in case Methanol had caught fire, because its flames are unvisible without colouring in it. And water is the only way to stop methanol fires. Powder doesn't work.
@noonecfcf Actually water to disperse any fuel that may have spilled during refuelling. Methanol burns invsibly but is easily drowned out by adding water.
I work in a hotel and zanardi was a guest staying here this week - most amazing person i've ever met! he is so inspiring and has an amazing personality. Truly a genuine person. I could have spoken to him for hours. He is a cyclist now and was staying at our hotel for the para olympics! He is a trooper! God bless his soul!

I don't speak German, so I don't know what they are saying, but even so, you can tell. You can tell that they've almost accepted that Zanardi is dead. Just to look at the scale of a crash like this, to hear people's reactions, and to see a person recover from it really is a miracle.
@hjuiolk They don't wash the tires. They throw water around the fuel tank and engine for the case methanol caught fire, cause a methanol fire is unvisible. And powder extinguishers don't work vs. methanol. Only water can put those fires out.

Ebenso falsch die Einschätzung des Kommentators "Kalte Reifen". Zanardi hat nur getankt, die Reifen waren auf Betriebstemperatur. Alex fightete mit Kanaan um die Spitze und hat in der Ausfahrt zu viel riskiert.
Es wäre eine Farce gewesen das Rennen nicht zu steigen. Ich wohnte damals im gleichen Hotel wie der CART Officials und die waren allesamt happy und begeistert von der Anlage und Dresden/Deutschland im Allgemeinen. Ich saß am Ende der Haupttribüne Unterrang an Turn 1 - alles hautnah miterlebt. Am Abend nach dem Rennen saßen die Forsythe (Tagliani) Mechaniker am Nebentisch im Italienischen Dörfchen. Da wäre selbst der Kinderteller noch zu viel gewesen so wenig Appetit hatte ich
Man muss allerdings dazu sagen, dass die ARD vor allem deshalb die Sendung abgebrochen hat, weil nur drei Tage zuvor die Geschehnisse vom 11.September 2001 die Welt erschüttert hatten, und man nicht noch mehr schlimme Bilder zeigen wollte. Vor allem nicht bei einem so langerwarteten Ereignis wie dem langerwarteten CART Debüt in Deutschland.

Dafür gibt es in den Ovalrennen, gerade in der Nascar, viele Überholmanöver. Und der Sound ist auch Wahnsinn.
Sowas kann im Motorsport immer passieren. Bei Motorradrennen ist es ja noch viel gefährlicher als bei Ovalrennen, sollte man auch mal dran denken, bevor man sich über Ovalrennen aufregt.
genau deswegen finde ich amerikanischen rennsport total bescheuert was is der sinn mit 320 km/h im kreis zu fahren das einzige was passiert is sowas total unnötig greg moore hat damals sein leben bei dem sport verloren.
deswegen wird sich das auch nie weltweit durchsetzen diese kak champcar und nascar serien

Sie hätten ja weiter informieren können, hätten ja nicht die Erstversorgung zeigen müssen, sondern Pacecar oder den Himmel, und hätten dazu kommentieren müssen. Als Fernsehzuschauer kommt man sich in so einer Situation ziemlich hilflos vor und wird mit dem gerade Geschehenen allein gelassen. Dann noch zu sagen, dass das vor dem man Angst gehabt hatte, soeben eingetreten ist und das man das quasi geahnt hat und ein schlechtes Bauchgefühl bei der Übertragung hatte ist doch echt ein wenig seltsam.
@reynay69 Das Rennen war am 15.9.. Ich fands gut, daß die ARD keine Wiederholung geboten hat. Den Unfall nochmal und nochmal zu zeigen macht bei Zanardi halt auch nicht neue Beine dran. Aber Zanardi ist auch ohne Beine ein Tier! Im Jahr 2003 machte er den Ehrenabschluß der letzten 13 verbleibenden Runden von 2001. Und danach fuhr er Siege in der WTCC ein.
Was die ARD da abgezogen hat ist eine Farce. Was soll diese Ansage: Vor der Übertragung "innerlich zerissen". Eigentlich wollte die ARD das Rennen nicht übertragen wegen irgendwelchen Unfallrisiken. Dann auf Druck der Amerikaner übertrug man das Rennen doch. Das widerspricht sich. Keiner sieht das gern, aber Unfälle kann man bei solchen Rennen nicht ausschliessen.
Ich war damals als Zuschauer an der Strecke und habe den schrecklichen Unfall miterlebt. Später habe ich ein Interview mit dem damals zuständigen Streckenarzt gelesen und erfahren, wie dramatisch der gesamte Rettungsvorgang wirklich war. Demnach hatte die Bergungscrew Alex Zanardi eigentlich schon nach deren Ankunft am Autowrack aufgegeben.
Umso schöner ist es für mich als Fan zu sehen, wie Zanardi mit seiner Behinderung umgeht und wie er 2003 seine "missing laps" fahren durfte.
nur wenn es passiert, passiert es. man kann nichts gegen machen, bzw. nicht vorbeugen damit sowas nicht passiert. wie gesagt, es ist ein sport mit risiko, wenn es passiert, passiert es. nur wenn ihr euch so aufregt, das manche sich solche videos anschauen, wieso habt ihr es dann angeklickt? und sogar positiv bewertet. denkt mal darüber nach!
ich verstehe die aufregung nicht, es ist ein sport mit risiko. das weis jeder der fans, jeder fahrer, jedes familienmitglied der familien, jeder mittätiger. das es nicht schön ist und keiner hofft das sowas passiert, sheen wir glaub ich alle so.

ich war bei dem unfall auf dem eurospeedway und ich habe in der unfallkurve gestanden und ich fand das richtig von der ard weil glaubt wenn ich euch sage das man solch ein bild niemals vergisst und ich sage euch in der kurve war mindestens 10 min lang toten stille und wir haben in dem augenblick für zanardi gebetet das er lebt und ich bin nicht gläubig und das sagt wohl einiges
Man hätte nicht unterbrechen müssen, da sowas dazugehört. Aber wenn Sie es unbedingt wollten, dann ist es nunmal so.Jeder Rennfahrer nimmt quasi den Tod mit auf die Tour und dessen ist sich jeder bewusst. Aber trotzdem muss man hier solche dummen Sprechblasen einfügen.
Wer sich nur Rennen ansieht, in der Hoffnung dass was schreckliches passiert, sollte zum Psychiater gehen.

mag sein, dass man mich dafür ohrfeigen möchte, aber ich fand die entscheidung falsch. warum? unfälle gehören zum motorsport nunmal dazu, und wenn es zu so einem unfall kommt, dann soll man einfach auf die bilder von der unfallstelle verzichten und zuschauer oder das feld hinter dem pace car zeigen, ist doch heute auch nicht anders

@RRaquello Cold tyres, I don't think they had tyre warmers in ChampCar at that stage. That made it tricky coming out of the pits.

das was in den tagen nach dem 11 september abgelaufen ist, war doch die absolute lächerlichkeit. das thema tod und humor war in den medien verboten worden. Wir deutschen haben uns mächtig auf der nase rumtanzen lassen. Aber als die hunderttausenden iraker über die jahre abgeknallt wurden, ist das programm auch nicht geändert worden

Ja, hat er. Hat aber beide Beine unterhalb des Knies verloren. Hat dann 1 oder 2 Jahre später die Runden in einem modefiziertem Rennwagen (aber immer ein Champ Car Wagen) vollendet. Seine Zeiten hätten für eine Top10 Platzierung in dem Jahr locker gereicht. Stattdessen hat er anschließend bei den Tourenwagen mitgefahren (auch da mit modefiziertem Wagen). Hat sogar 2 oder 3 Siege davon getragen bevor er aus dem Rennsport geschehen ausgestiegen ist.

@juxhin000 Water. They spray water on the entrance of the fueltank in case Methanol had caught fire, because its flames are unvisible without colouring in it. And water is the only way to stop methanol fires. Powder doesn't work.

I work in a hotel and zanardi was a guest staying here this week - most amazing person i've ever met! he is so inspiring and has an amazing personality. Truly a genuine person. I could have spoken to him for hours. He is a cyclist now and was staying at our hotel for the para olympics! He is a trooper! God bless his soul!

I don't speak German, so I don't know what they are saying, but even so, you can tell. You can tell that they've almost accepted that Zanardi is dead. Just to look at the scale of a crash like this, to hear people's reactions, and to see a person recover from it really is a miracle.

@hjuiolk They don't wash the tires. They throw water around the fuel tank and engine for the case methanol caught fire, cause a methanol fire is unvisible. And powder extinguishers don't work vs. methanol. Only water can put those fires out.

Gut, dass ich damals vor Ort war. Was hat denn der 11. September mit dem Rennen zu tun? Die ARD tut gerade so, als wären Unfälle wie der von Zanardi in der CART an der Tagesordnung. Lächerlich, einzig über die Boxenausfahrt kann man die Stirn runzeln
Die Reaktion danach war aber richtig!
Ebenso falsch die Einschätzung des Kommentators "Kalte Reifen". Zanardi hat nur getankt, die Reifen waren auf Betriebstemperatur. Alex fightete mit Kanaan um die Spitze und hat in der Ausfahrt zu viel riskiert.

Es wäre eine Farce gewesen das Rennen nicht zu steigen. Ich wohnte damals im gleichen Hotel wie der CART Officials und die waren allesamt happy und begeistert von der Anlage und Dresden/Deutschland im Allgemeinen. Ich saß am Ende der Haupttribüne Unterrang an Turn 1 - alles hautnah miterlebt. Am Abend nach dem Rennen saßen die Forsythe (Tagliani) Mechaniker am Nebentisch im Italienischen Dörfchen. Da wäre selbst der Kinderteller noch zu viel gewesen so wenig Appetit hatte ich

Man muss allerdings dazu sagen, dass die ARD vor allem deshalb die Sendung abgebrochen hat, weil nur drei Tage zuvor die Geschehnisse vom 11.September 2001 die Welt erschüttert hatten, und man nicht noch mehr schlimme Bilder zeigen wollte. Vor allem nicht bei einem so langerwarteten Ereignis wie dem langerwarteten CART Debüt in Deutschland.

Dafür gibt es in den Ovalrennen, gerade in der Nascar, viele Überholmanöver. Und der Sound ist auch Wahnsinn.
Sowas kann im Motorsport immer passieren. Bei Motorradrennen ist es ja noch viel gefährlicher als bei Ovalrennen, sollte man auch mal dran denken, bevor man sich über Ovalrennen aufregt.

genau deswegen finde ich amerikanischen rennsport total bescheuert was is der sinn mit 320 km/h im kreis zu fahren das einzige was passiert is sowas total unnötig greg moore hat damals sein leben bei dem sport verloren.

Also ich finde die Reaktion der ARD ABSOLUT INAKZEPTABEL.
Besonders dreist: "Wir sind an ihrer Seite geblieben." - spiegelt genau die Haltung der BRD gegenüber der Terrorbekämpfung wider.
Ansonsten: IndyCar/CART ist nicht das amerikanische Wort für Kindergarten,
und dies sollte JEDEM, der soetwas überträgt/ansieht, auch klar sein.
Drittens haben Zuschauer DAS RECHT, zu wissen, wer gewonnen hat
- insbesondere, wenn jemand fast mit seinem Leben dafür bezahlt, dass am Ende ein Sieger feststeht.

Sie hätten ja weiter informieren können, hätten ja nicht die Erstversorgung zeigen müssen, sondern Pacecar oder den Himmel, und hätten dazu kommentieren müssen. Als Fernsehzuschauer kommt man sich in so einer Situation ziemlich hilflos vor und wird mit dem gerade Geschehenen allein gelassen. Dann noch zu sagen, dass das vor dem man Angst gehabt hatte, soeben eingetreten ist und das man das quasi geahnt hat und ein schlechtes Bauchgefühl bei der Übertragung hatte ist doch echt ein wenig seltsam.

@reynay69 Das Rennen war am 15.9.. Ich fands gut, daß die ARD keine Wiederholung geboten hat. Den Unfall nochmal und nochmal zu zeigen macht bei Zanardi halt auch nicht neue Beine dran. Aber Zanardi ist auch ohne Beine ein Tier! Im Jahr 2003 machte er den Ehrenabschluß der letzten 13 verbleibenden Runden von 2001. Und danach fuhr er Siege in der WTCC ein.

Was die ARD da abgezogen hat ist eine Farce. Was soll diese Ansage: Vor der Übertragung "innerlich zerissen". Eigentlich wollte die ARD das Rennen nicht übertragen wegen irgendwelchen Unfallrisiken. Dann auf Druck der Amerikaner übertrug man das Rennen doch. Das widerspricht sich. Keiner sieht das gern, aber Unfälle kann man bei solchen Rennen nicht ausschliessen.

Ich war damals als Zuschauer an der Strecke und habe den schrecklichen Unfall miterlebt. Später habe ich ein Interview mit dem damals zuständigen Streckenarzt gelesen und erfahren, wie dramatisch der gesamte Rettungsvorgang wirklich war. Demnach hatte die Bergungscrew Alex Zanardi eigentlich schon nach deren Ankunft am Autowrack aufgegeben.
Umso schöner ist es für mich als Fan zu sehen, wie Zanardi mit seiner Behinderung umgeht und wie er 2003 seine "missing laps" fahren durfte.

ich war bei dem unfall auf dem eurospeedway und ich habe in der unfallkurve gestanden und ich fand das richtig von der ard weil glaubt wenn ich euch sage das man solch ein bild niemals vergisst und ich sage euch in der kurve war mindestens 10 min lang toten stille und wir haben in dem augenblick für zanardi gebetet das er lebt und ich bin nicht gläubig und das sagt wohl einiges

Man hätte nicht unterbrechen müssen, da sowas dazugehört. Aber wenn Sie es unbedingt wollten, dann ist es nunmal so.Jeder Rennfahrer nimmt quasi den Tod mit auf die Tour und dessen ist sich jeder bewusst. Aber trotzdem muss man hier solche dummen Sprechblasen einfügen.
Wer sich nur Rennen ansieht, in der Hoffnung dass was schreckliches passiert, sollte zum Psychiater gehen.

mag sein, dass man mich dafür ohrfeigen möchte, aber ich fand die entscheidung falsch. warum? unfälle gehören zum motorsport nunmal dazu, und wenn es zu so einem unfall kommt, dann soll man einfach auf die bilder von der unfallstelle verzichten und zuschauer oder das feld hinter dem pace car zeigen, ist doch heute auch nicht anders
