musicians dont cover other peoples songs for the sake of doing it better its purely respect for another musician that may have influenced them when they were growing up true musicians dont deal with the "whos better" bullshit....its nothing but respect
@jason42172 That's exactly the point I tried to make on a previous reply to someone else here,I definatelly agree with you, thnx for taking the time to post your input & tuning in!
IMHO a writer usually has the easiest and best interpretation of his own material. Yes, it was Ronnie we heard play when we all fell in love with this song and Davey Pattison's vocals. However, I hear the heart of a true string bender and fret wrecker coming through with his own interpretation and I love it. Mostly due to Davey's vocals, but also because I respect Michael's ability to honor a song while not feeling the need to mimick it! Well done all! Peace Always and All Ways! Dave Van Kleeck
@woofycalling My best friend and I (2 old farts;) went to a Trower Concert at a small hall years ago. After the show, my friend wanted to dash right away & beat the crowd out of the parking lot. Not sure why, but I kept telling him we should stick around, & I joked that maybe we could meet the band. Most cleared out & lo & behold, Davey Pattison, Glenn Letsch & I think Skip Gillette (all former Gamma Members), sat w/us at the bar, signed autographs, etc. Trower stayed backstage. Nice guys!!!
Did I read somewhere that... what would Pink Floyd sound like with Schenker instead of Gilmour? That would blow holes in the f-ckin ozone!!!!!! I do like Gilmour but Schenker would rip those tired old leads apart!!!!
Thanks for posting this. I enjoyed all of the music regardless of Schenker's lead on this one. I especially liked Pattison's vocals and the production on While My Guitar Gently Weeps.
I understand the debate being argued here between original and cover however what is severely lacking is heart. Ronnie Montrose played the original lead, and all of his leads and rhythms for that matter, with heart. Schenker is just putting in a lead. Frankly it sounds like noise. To further illustrate my point, imagine Schenker filling in for David Gilmour in Pink Floyd. This version (I'm purposely avoiding the "cover" issue) is that much of a mismatch. It is a poor song choice for Schenker.
I don't think the idea of covering this song was to top Montrose,a cover doesn't have to be an exact copy, that's just my opinion but I respect yours also, thnx for your input!
You're right.. a cover doesn't have to sound good at all. The point of the Voyager song is the lead. That's the song. Without that lead, it's just a boring song. It's a major hook that's missing. It would be like playing "Into the Arena" without any of the leads, which are what makes the song so good to begin with.
I was really disappointed when I heard this lead. I do own the CD, which I bought solely for this song, to hear Schenker add to a great solo, but instead he missed the whole point.
I didn't mean a cover doesn't have to be good at all,I guess it all comes down to this, you got your reasons why you disliked this version & I got my reasons why I liked it,maybe part of it is that since I'm a Schenker fan,I probably would feel the same with somebody doing a Schenker cover,I would expect a top notch cover,so I understand your point!
Michael has respect for musicians, never for one minute believe that he was wanting to out do Ronny, he was just doing his part, and a pretty dar n good one at that.
Right on,I think between all Musicians They all respect each other & I think they appreciate when another makes a cover ,they are not thinking is a challenge but a honor,is the fans that sweat it out for no reason & is not just this 2 guitarists!
Your completely right, Michael Schenker is a classy guy who appreciates musicianship. He is one of the most under rated guitarist I can think of to date.
Thanks you my friend for bringing this fine audio/still clip to us. It sounds magnificent with a complete rendition of a different perspective, yet keeping the original sound and vibes intact. I remember UFO back in the early to mid-70s when I was in high school.
I was a serious album collector and I had a few UFO LPs. I used to go to second-hand
UFO guitarist. Wow, different and very clean. As good as the original with a different playing style yet retains the feel of the original. Of course, 2 can't play the same chords and riffs, that is what sets them apart with their unique style and character.
Thank you for appreciating this version, you really know what you're talking about, some people just can't see that far,and I don't wanna point any fingers, lol!!thank you jadesystem!
Nah, it's definitely not up to the standard of the Gamma version. Pattison still sounds fine but Schenker's solo is just quick. It lacks the tone and feel which Montrose had. Good post, though.

What is also amazing is vocalist Davey Pattison, who plays also with Robin Trower and isn't a young man, though he rocks big time

He should have copied the Montrose lead note for note. Even Schenker cannot top what Montrose did... and he wasn't even close on this try.

record shops in Santa Cruz, CA picking-up
everything while cutting class.
Keep up the great work my friend !!
