Donna Summer! Wow Just loved her for decades now! & No, I don't get the Metaphor of Cake in the rain. I just hope someone sent her the recipe? That worries me..? ♥D
@DFoxHope HAHAHAHA! that's funny! I can understand Richard Harris singing it - he was always drunk and God knows what he was talking about! BUT for her to sing it - I wonder if she read it and said "WTF?!!" LOL I also hope she finally received the recipe! LOL
Hi, I am Marisa. I love music.I am an very artistic person who was born with some natural talent in singing and writing. Let me know what you think of my personal site. Please let me know if you thnk that she is better than I am vocally etc...Or if you think that I am superior vocally and creatively, let me know. If you think we are equals, let me know! I value your opinion. I have photos, and you can also let me know if you like my image or if you prefer famous people's images.
When Richard Harris did this tune in 1968, everyone was high on LSD. When Donna Summer did this tune 10 years later, everyone was high on Cocaine. I haven't used either, but I'd have to imagine, since Mrs. Summer's version went to #1 on The Billboard Pop Charts for 3 weeks in 1978, Cocaine is a more potent drug than LSD. Am I wrong?
@kja427 The lyrics could be referring to LSD, the disco rythm in Donnan Summers hit is more appealing to the energy cocaïne can give you. But besides that, disco was appealing to a lot of people in those days (and still is).
Alem de ooottima cantora, ela embalou minhas noites de sabado nas discotecas e meus sonhos. Foi meu sonho de consumo por mutio tempo, Aquela boca, aquele olhar e o sorpo que tinha, nooosssaaa.......
24 # 1 hits on the dance/disco charts she truly i the quuen of disco. and she the only artist to have a number hit in eachb decade since 1970.rock and roll hall of fame asap
This reminds me of a spirited time. I took my youth and power for granted. Now I am tired and bewildered. Yet there is so much strength to gather from great music, real music. Thank you for posting. I have always loved Donna Summer's voice.
@peoniesfleur Come on... don't be so dramatic. Just think of Barbra Streisand or Madonna herself. A pity Donna Summer waited to long to come back to stage :(
@peoniesfleur wow, you're right. kinda of hit on this video by accident and was half expecting a weakened with age voice from donna summer, which you can somewhat hear in the end of phrase high notes that have to be held for a couple bars, but otherwise the verses of the song sound the same as when she recorded it in the 70s
46 people are Justin Bieber, Beyonce, and Rihanna, fans!! This is the Woman that had, and still got me Dancing ! Hope that she gets in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame! She is not Called the QUEEN of DISCO for Nothing. May I remind the YOUNGSTERS, this is ''LIVE''. No LIP SYNC, Britany Spears, No wardrobe Malfinctions, to sell Records! Let see Rihanna do this '' LIVE''. To the 46 IDIOTS, TONE-DEAF, AUTO-TUNED, People, .............May I present MY QUEEN, MISS DONNA SUMMER, !!
Ahfaxthis--her father is a minister and disowned her for the "sinful" lyrics in her songs, try to be tolerant of how people are affected in their youth...I doubt she hates gay people but has most likely been impacted by religious views...be tolerant if you want tolerance
What is this? Didn't she ever listen to the original? Where does this comment about "party time!" come frome? This is great poetry; not dance music. I have to end my comment now or I will add something that is not nice about her stage presences too. Sorry that this artist missed the point.
@nanicosky Anyone who uses seven exclamation points must be very serious about their communications and must provide a reply with deep content and a carefully reasoned message. It is especially noteworthy when a reply attacks the author rather than speaking to the content of the message. Do you understand or am I typing too fast?
@michaelalanlee All she was saying was that she wanted them to enjoy the love, the joy, and the music --and have a great time dancing to a spectacular song...A song as classical as this can be interpreted in many ways and, to me, they all sounded great then and they still do.... Thanks Jimmy, .Richard, Donna, Glen, et al....and. I agree, POETRY!!!.(in any genre)?.. oh yeah, baby!!!
Additionally, with Richard Harris's version, (the original recording of "MacArthur Park") it topped the BILLBOARD HOT 100 spot at #2 in May, l968. This was followed by no less than 107 (!) other artists that then did covers of it, Donna's, of course, included.
Jimmy Webb masterpiece -- classic & incredible. So many, many artists have done covers of "MacArthur Park"...&. Donna's version, having reached #1 on BILLBOARD TOP 100 in 1978, still sounds amazing! Much love to songwriter, song and singer! <3 <3 <3 XOXOXOXOX
she is the Queen and Diva of disco. To my knowledge she was the only solo artists that i rember them saying that she had 2 of the top 3 songs on the chart at the same time, "hot stuff/bad girls". I have the vinyls and would not trade them for anything every song is great
Donna has a way of looking at people that is soooo hot. I could say incendiary, inflaming, inciting, but none of those express the HEAT that her gaze engenders.
It simply means you'll never have those years to live over again no matter how much you may want them...and you need that time back to try again because you really blew it the first time (well, most of it, anyway).......Ohhhhh, noooooooo!!!!!
But thanks Jimmy Webb, Donna, Richard, et al. for the great song and sound.<3
@toughjohn9 Yup I remember this song from the 70's as a teen growing up in NJ. I like this version more though, it's kickin'. Having those kick ass back up musicians always helps too ;-)
She's talented and has stage presence. Nevertheless, her version isn't nearly as good as Richard Harris's. On top of that, it bothers me when someone takes the creation of another and changes the words; makes it seem like they're so arrogant that they want to suggest that the original artist, the creator, got it wrong and they came along and fixed it. Plus, I don't like it when when attribution isn't given, especially when there are so many watching the show.
@guyNbluejeans Sorry but I disagree. As a 70s child who grew up to love this song, I mostly loved the tempo and beat, because otherwise, it is the stupidest lyrics to ever exist! The lyrics don't make sense. Even today, most people who grew up to Donna's version, didn't understand why she had such a fascination with soggy sponge cake and torrential downpours on baked goods! and now I find out it wasn't her song and I heard the original and its is horrendous! Donna transformed it!
@cjs33139 You needn't apologize, there's no accounting for taste (as Larry King used to say).
Her version is just flat awful. No feeling to it, just blowing through it is all. Plus where does she get off changing the lyrics to "my cake" and "chinese checkers"?
Richard Harris, the original singer, did it a billions times better than this disco lady!
@cjs33139 Loads of song lyrics dont make sense, specially when the songwritersare on drugs ! If you cant enjoy this cos of the lyrics go back to poetry. Honestly!
Donna is granted, a bit older than when the early cuts and appearances happened. This song as 'disco' is to be taken lightly - BUT - her maturity now exudes a seriousness - it leaks through a bit - almost a sadness - as though she /feels/ it personally. I pick up on that - like a lens into the artist. For me, that is real. Feel me?
THERE HASN'T BEEN OR WILL EVER BE A VOICE LIKE "DONNA SUMMERS"....HER VOICE STILL MESMERIZING TO HEAR.....I WOULD STILL LOVE TO SEE HER PERFORM....I LOVE YOU DONNA SUMMERS...=O),...OXOXOXOXOXO
Donna's Velvet Voice Just as Strong and Pure as ever What a Beautiful Voice and Arrangement so nicely done. If I had the privilege to hear it every time she performed it I still wouldn't tire of this song let alone her voice and performances. The Star That Will Always Shine even if she lives to be 100 and comes out in a motorized Chair !
Great song by one of the geatest voices. Richard Harris was good, but does not top Summer's great voice

She kinda murders this very tender and emotional song though.

I think she's a great part of music history )

Donna's Velvet Voice Just as Strong and Pure as ever What a Beautiful Voice and Arrangement so nicely done. If I had the privilege to hear it every time she performed it I still wouldn't tire of this song let alone her voice and performances. The Star That Will Always Shine even if she lives to be 100 and comes out in a motorized Chair !
