@TONYE17 You want 2 buy a red rock lens adapter but you want to put it on 1986 1/2" mag tape camcorder? A $200 flip camera, with compressed hi def video, has 4 times the res as 1/2" mag tape and none of the distortion! Upgrade your gear one thing at a time. The red rock package seen here costs $2400 plus nikon lenses. If you're not serious about camera work just stick to mag tape. Upgrade your camera to at least a canon T2i with zoom lens if you want selective depth of field at under $1K.
Would i be better off using a Canon 7D camera for all my DoF stuff seams easier than buying all this equipment now that Canon offers video in their smaller cameras such as the rebel and 7D. The only issue i would have is gathering my audio if there was any, but i would use something different to capture that. What is your take on those types of cameras and lenses over the bigger camera's with all these adapters? I have been able to produce some nice things with the rebel and 7D that look similar
@jade041203 First, RRLA solves the problem for vid cams. Once SCARLET comes out, RRLA is truly legacy. Not only audio is a problem on DSLRs but so is compression. Still cams in movie mode compress the hell out of the image. If you are serious, get a RED ONE. If you cant afford the RED ONE sub rent until you can. Dont buy into DSLRs The models are changing so fast its not worth the money. The downside to ALL the DSLRs is that they are still SLR not motion picture cameras and no MoPIc features.
Yes. Once you set the rails, risers and mount for the specific camera, all other adjustments are either back focus or lens focus. Make sure all bolts are snug. Don't want them working loose.
Would you recommend Redrock M2 adapter (the better encore version is out now) over Letus, Brevis, SGpro/SGBlade what have you? I am about to get this for my HVX200E, I have a 30mm 1.4 lens, and a telescopic lens from Nikon.
Any advice is highly appreciated. Thanks in advance.
The Red Rock is more or less an affordable P+S technik style housed in a box that mounts on a rail system. Because you may find yourself in a handheld situation and quickly moving the cam, You need to take the stress off the camera's threads (where all the units mount) and transfer the weight of any unit to the rails. RR does this best and with FF, Matte Box rails, etc. it is a solid system. You cannot be a serious cam op w/o FF. Get a new unit as the Ground Glass is better now than before.
I just read a post over a CML and a film in San Antonio, TX used Brevis, RR and Letus. They liked the Letus the best b/c of price, upright image, least light loss, best image. but said the Nikon mount was very loose on it. So, FF would have to be very gentle or lens would fall off. Also, for LONG lenses, it put a lot of strain on the connections.
is there a store or some place where one can walk in and walk out with erveything needed? where would one go for stuff like this. or a good website where everything can be purchased together in full?
does the redrockmicro come with the 35 mm lens or doe you have to purchase it seperatley and if you do where do you buy the lens? also can you use nikon lens ? i have a camera that has a 35 mm lens and i use that lens to adapt it to the redrock? thanks for your time
I have a q. would you get an hd adapter lens, with this, or get the matte box or the focus puller, cuz we have the redrock just don't know what else we should get
What cam is it for? FF is key for ANY serious focus work.
The only functional reason to have a matte box is to use glass filters. At $200 a filter and a "need" to have about 30 different ones on hand (ND's, POLA, IR, 82A,B,C,D, softs, black PMs, warms, corals, and selection of gradients)matte boxes are just glorifying the camera owner with a small camera to make it look bigger.
A 50 cents cardboard eyebrow can do the same as the matte box.
what is the difference between this adopter and the one that sell for 150 on eBay is it just for connecting the 35mm lens or urs got something else as will plz take a look at this link
Hey man whats up.... I have the same camera as you. And I am going to get this whole Redrock set up. I have an old Nikon auto Vivitar wide-angle 35mm 1:2.8 lens. I was just wondering if you knew if that would work with this apparatus? Because I really don't want to drop an extra 600 on a lense unless I have to. Also what bundle pack do you have there? Thank you :)
35mm film is shot on 35mm film cameras; video is shot on video cameras. This does not let you put film in a video camera.
What is tries to do is recreate the selective depth of field commonly seen in film cameras, like 16mm and 35mm. The adapter lets that SDOF record in the video format. It still is NOT 35mm FILM. Repeat, it is NOT FILM! You want the 35mm film look, use 35mm FILM!
As for what package to get, that's a question to ask on red rock's forum. See description for link.
Hey great vid. I have a question though. I have an hvx200A and i want to shoot my film on an anamorphic scale. 1) how can this be done with the redrock m2 and 2) which redrock package should i get?
I'm not a fan of Canon's color/chroma sampling so I would first suggest to get out of the Canon and into a true HD camera like the HVX200 or Red Scarlet (early 2009).
Most Ops prefer a Matte Box and 7" or 9" LCD monitor to mount on the camera and "flip" the image 180 degrees. Also follow focus and whips are always used on a rack focus.
All of the test footage using these 35mm adaptors (letus, m2, brevis, etc.)look SUPER SOFT and have TERRIBLE shallow DOF. I mean if your subject moves forward like 3 inches they go out of focus. Seems like it would be useful ONLY on non moving shots. Absolutley impossible to film anything on-the-go. I wouldn't spend the money on the adapters **UNLESS** you're filming subjects that are motionless sitting in a chair or something.
no, so that dust of the groundglass gets unnoticed, the spinning part is the groundglass on what the lens project the image which gets filmed by the camcorder ... its in the exact position where the film would be when the lense is attached to a film camera ..
the 35mm adapter and lens bundles from redrock are around 2 and a half k. not really out of the realm of possibility for anyone determined enough. plus, this thing will work on an old sony pd150/170 or canon XL1 series which you can pick up for bugger all on ebay while everyone races towards HD ;)
Do you need the step down ring to 58mm for it to fit onto the M2? Or will the 82 to 72 fit in? I was looking on the site and i was thinking about buying the HD complete package, but it looks like they only give you a step down from 82 to 72mm
I'm trying to make the rod support by my self to save some money. so can you tell me how long your rods are? I already have the M2 and I plan to put a Mattbox in front. how long should my rods be? I don't want too long or too short abviously...
15mm rods come in various sizes (9", 12", 15", 18") and usually stainless but some are carbon fiber.
The rods you see are 18".
The camera has to mount at the proper height to line up with the M2. Red Rock uses thin metal spacers (1/8", 3/16", 1/4") to help with this type of adjustment on their system.
Love the Redrock M2! We're shooting our entire web series, "Valley Peaks" on the M2 with canon lenses. Come check it out if you wanna see how it looks...Production starts in a week so episode 1 will be up soon!
Hi my friend. how ever you know I have the Cinematographer Complete Package: HD Edition for PL lenses. I find this lens(18mm T1.4 (f1.2) Zeiss Distagon, Mk. I, Bayonet mount, focus gear, fully overhauled. New iris, re-coated element. Very hard to find without buying the whole set) to buy for my M2 package. what do you recommend?
This vid was only to show how to put it together. The whips fit into the focus handle and the different lengths are for the focus puller to use the one that suits their necessary distance to the camera. I plan on doing a vid of the M2 in action and I will include the whip use.
"I've already put on the anamorphic adapter which is for the hd setup."
Uh, that's not what it's called. Anamorphic means a non spherical lens which creates a 2.35 aspect ratio. What you have already put on is the achromat. This lens helps the camera see the ground glass.
Hi Sir. I bought the Cinematographer Complete Package: HD Edition for PL lenses. I am planing to buy the Zeiss Superspeed MKII 25mm lens. can you tell me please if this lense is one of the right one for M2 . thanks
There is no "right lens". There are many different filming situations and you need a quiver of lens for these various situations.
A basic set of 3 fixed lenses, "primes" something like a 28mm, 35mm and 85mm then maybe add a wide 14mm and narrow 135mm. Finally a telephoto of 20~80. All lenses need to have a wide aperture of at least 2.8 (3.5,4,4.5 are just too small b/c all the glass will steal the light before it gets to the video sensor.
Thanks for your answare. my ? is about the size of the lens(format). you know the size of the lenses for 16mm motion pictuer camera is different with the size of lenses for35mmm motion pictuer camera. so is the M2 work with the both size lenses or only tha adaptor been made for one specefic one. I know the lenses go from 10mm(wide angle) to 300mm(for the longest shot). I hope you got my ? thank.
Lens MOUNT (how the lens attaches) and lens FOCAL LENGTH are not the same thing.
16mm motion picture lens mounts are either "C", bayonet or PL (Positive Lock) If you get the M2 with PL then you can ONLY use PL mount lenses (which can be used for 16mm or 35mm motion picture cameras)
To buy one Zeiss lens you could get a whole set of Manual focus Nikon SLR lens. IF this is a hobby it doesn't make sense and if you are a professional, the production will rent the Weiss or Cooke lenses for you.
i just bought the M2 Indie Bundle - HD Edition for Nikon Lenses im gonna use it with a JVC HD100, i don't get it . . . how the achromatic lense fit on the adapter?... you have a nice rig there man ! and thanks for posting this helpful video...
I got a clean set up for myself now. but nowhere near this. lol. i mean NOWHERE I got a couple lenses and a mk2. and some sick lights.(modded construction lights) lol.
I recommend using only manual focus lenses. Their housings seem stronger than AF's but if thats what you have then try it. There is a big discussion on the red rock forum as to Nikon vs Zeiss vs Canon. I use Nikon and Pentax and there are differences but its about a look and not quality. Each different lens mount needs a different socket to be the proper distance from the ground glass.
Yes, I went through the instructions exactly as the manual stated. I didn't use a the focus assist because I just had the camera set to SD. The only other thing I can think of is that the UV filter attached to the M2 box is stuck to it and I just left it on, attached the hard mount kit to it, and then attched the camera with the HD acromat filter on. Maybe having the UV filter is what's throwing it off?
I setup my HVX200 like you demonstrated in the video. When I do the back focus, I'm having to focus down all the way to "Macro" and it still doesn't seem as crisp in focus. Is this what happens for you as well? I'm thinking maybe the focal point distance is not right from the M2 to the camera.
dont get me wrong the M2 is a dam good peice of kit but you can pull pretty good depth of feild with the HVX200 factory lense.... Plus you wont lose image quality like you do when you mount one of those things on the front....
the pd 100 does not have a 58mm ring size its actually 52. what are you refering to? even if the pd100 mounted directly to the M2 without the acromat you canget a full frame image with the pd100 as the focal plane is too far for the pd100 to zoom iinto and focus with the m2 size of housing.
woops, misspoke. I use the wide angle lens which is 82mm and then attach the acromat lens to it. Some of my vid on my other channel where shot this way. Yeah the focus is a little less that crisp.
You can always recalibrate a camera's mount anytime you have moved it. Just depends on how gentle you are when moving. BTW, "back focus" so be checked every time white balance is done or camera is moved.
What is the anamorphic adapter? I can't seem to find much on it.

do you recommend getting the canon EOS lens mount type?

The manual does state that you cannot have any extra filters b/c it throws the focal plane off of alignment. (page 16 top)

yeah, I'm thinking this might be the case. I'm going to have to find a way to get this stuck filter off.

1: Did you read the manual? 2:You lenses could be the issue. 3:Are you using "FOCUS ASSIST"?
just some thoughts.

Whats the spinning glass thing for?
hoarp001 4 years ago
it softens the grain that appears through all the elements of glass. look on the net for M2 sample videos.

dont get me wrong the M2 is a dam good peice of kit but you can pull pretty good depth of feild with the HVX200 factory lense....

Great Demo! Is most of this a one-time setup or do you have to plan 9 minutes set-up time every time you us the M2?
denekes 4 years ago
Correction: the lens threads onto the M2 are 55mm not what I said as 58mm. Sorry for the confusion.
