I used to never listen to Country but then I realized that country isn't so bad when I heard her songs. Then I listened to couple other country singers like Carrie and Tim McGraw. If not for Taylor, I would never had bothered with country music.

@Xzamilloh I partially agree with you. She's had her good performances and her bad, obviously. Her voice has improved over the years. 70% of the time, she's out of tune in performances in at least a few notes. But she does have a lot of great live performances too. I would show you but you probably wouldn't bother listenig to them. In case you do, look up "Taylor Swift Tim McGraw CMA Music Festival" or "Taylor Swift Back To December CMA Awards" or "Taylor Swift Love Story Live on Letterman".

But don't even come close to Carrie Underwood's performance rate, or any other Female country star (even Leann Rimes). But when you have a powerhouse voice, you don't need to write your own music to make the song your own. Dolly Parton wrote and sang "I Will Always Love You"....Whitney Houston came around and remade the song for The Bodyguard...and made it her own. Even though Dolly wrote and sang it, it's Whitney's signature song!!

Even though hands down, she has the most amateurish voice in Mainstream Female Country. But she's popular....so she gets more praise. @Xzamilloh I happen to like both singers, but I agree they are at way diff. levels. Carrie is way better vocally. And lyrically, I actually prefer Carrie too. I like Taylor Swift in a more 'guilty pleasure' sense. Her songs are more 'fun' / 'get up and dance to' type. Taylor might work well in being behind the scenes, as an instrumentalist/songwriter for someone who can sing better. And it'd be nice if she got some formal vocal training. That could make her much better live.

@Xzamilloh The fact that Taylor plays instruments when she sings live makes CARRIE better? That doesn't make sense. An a cappella performance, frankly, is a bit boring, even if it's Carrie, who I like and does have a great voice. But Carrie just stands there most of the time. And I agree with ItsThoseCrazyChicks that Carrie's voice doesn't appeal to too many people. It's almost opera-like because she hits such a WIDE range of notes. Nothing wrong with that, but some people prefer Taylor's voice.

Okay, to put it this way: Carrie is a WAY better singer, Taylor is a better songwriter, both's third albums SUCKED compared to their respective second one's but the person in for the long run is Carrie, sorry guys! Carrie has had fourteen top 2 hits, 11 #1's and Taylor has had only 8 top 2's and 4 #1's, soooo... Plus, Carrie is developing as a songwriter as well, and some of her songs kick the hell out of anything Taylor's done, maybe with the exception of "Fifteen"...

I have to say, Carrie didn't fight her way to the top like Taylor. She has a strong voice going for her, and that's how she won American Idol. The thing is, she didn't have to work very hard. I think we all have to admit that. Taylor went to Nashville performing + looking for a record deal. She was very proactive and hardworking.
ive seen both carrie and taylor live. taylor puts on a better show, but carrie is the better vocalist. i love taylor and carrie, i love taylor for her lyrics and i love carrie for her voice. you really can't compare the two because they have different strengths.
And Carrie thinks she can act. Has anyone seen her in Soul Surfer? She BOMBED. She was practically smiling when Bethany (AnnaSophia Robb) was crying. Taylor has been on CSI, in the movie Valentines Day, and SNL, all times when she performed very believably.

Her voice has improved over the years. 70% of the time, she's out of tune in performances in at least a few notes. But she does have a lot of great live performances too. I would show you but you probably wouldn't bother listenig to them. But when you have a powerhouse voice, you don't need to write your own music to make the song your own. Dolly Parton wrote and sang "I Will Always Love You"....Whitney Houston came around and remade the song for The Bodyguard...and made it her own. I like Taylor Swift in a more 'guilty pleasure' sense. Her songs are more 'fun' / 'get up and dance to' type. Taylor might work well in being behind the scenes, as an instrumentalist/songwriter for someone who can sing better. And it'd be nice if she got some formal vocal training. That could make her much better live.

Carrie has a great voice... that can be denied..she won american idol...BUT....I need a soul singing...not only a voice that can hit the highest notes.. With me, Taylor wins... her voice is sweet, soulful, touching and HONESLY from her heart..l that's what a truly artist with me.. Britney Spears has sold millions and won Grammys, how many times have you heard her sing live? I can count on one hand. And do you notice in the video when both are singing the Star Spangled Banner, Taylor Swift has a piano and fireworks going on to drown out her voice, and yet Carrie sang acapella? That's real talent.

And if you really think her having a bunch of songs on the charts makes her the better singer, then you definitely need to open your ears.

When she holds high notes I can't listen to it. It's just not good to me. Carrie is still talented, I can't deny that. But I don't like her. She could do anything and it would not impress me. An a cappella performance, frankly, is a bit boring, even if it's Carrie, who I like and does have a great voice. But Carrie just stands there most of the time. And I agree with ItsThoseCrazyChicks that Carrie's voice doesn't appeal to too many people. It's almost opera-like because she hits such a WIDE range of notes. Nothing wrong with that, but some people prefer Taylor's voice.

Okay, to put it this way: Carrie is a WAY better singer, Taylor is a better songwriter, both's third albums SUCKED compared to their respective second one's but the person in for the long run is Carrie, sorry guys! Carrie has had fourteen top 2 hits, 11 #1's and Taylor has had only 8 top 2's and 4 #1's, soooo... Plus, Carrie is developing as a songwriter as well, and some of her songs kick the hell out of anything Taylor's done, maybe with the exception of "Fifteen"...

I have to say, Carrie didn't fight her way to the top like Taylor. She has a strong voice going for her, and that's how she won American Idol. The thing is, she didn't have to work very hard. I think we all have to admit that. Taylor went to Nashville performing + looking for a record deal. She was very proactive and hardworking.

You can train with a voice coach, but it doesn't make too much of a difference. Since when did it become more important to celebrate natural born ability than acquired skills?
