lisburn-lisbon thats not the point u stupid irish twat! you changed ur mind because ur all brean dead sheep & did what ur masters told u 2 & about what u said about not knowing what was in it the first time, well the world knows all 2 well that that was just an excuse 2 try & hide your countrys cowardness in been bullied into doing what u were told! oh & about the name the fighting irish, well you fools gave that nick name 2 urselves no 1 else see's u as fighters! God bless Poland!!!!!
a small impoverished country is easily taken advantage of by bigger countries around it,
there's no denying that britain abused it when they had control of it, but after the 1916 rising, it wasnt until the prisoners were executed that people saw value in independence, you could call them (us, im first generation but born in canada, yes plastic paddy, whatever you like) fickle but really thats just a sweeping generalization rather than a fact
it was quite clear that irish people are quite... uncertain about the EU, considering the rejection of the lisbon treaty, but as ever, those who are in charge in the free state government saw fit to it so they proudly proclaimed that it was a "good" thing to have constitutional values undermined for the sake of financial gain
Fianna Fail are almost as big touts as provisional Sinn Fein
but who else should irish citizens vote for, Fine Gael?
@cluch9 I was disgusted by the Irish government refusing to listen to the vioce of the people who voted against the European treaty but the sad fact is that Eire would struggle without the money which it receives from the EU.
I can't say that it has benefited much from being an "independant" state. Shooting the rebels in 1916 was a big mistake because the Irish love to see themselves as victims and martyrs.
"because the Irish love to see themselves as victims and martyrs"
sweeping generalization there, blatant bigotry, none of that in this discussion
ireland HAS benefited from independence, quite a bit, the era of the celtic tiger is over, but led to ireland having one of the highest average paychecks in the world, diaspora, like me, can go there to live and have scholarships provided by the government, its benefited wholly since 1921
your disgust for the irish government comes from that it is simply a proxy government
in 1921 eammon de valera said to the irish people not to put down their guns until a republic has been won, what did he do 15 years later?
started hanging irish republicans, and allowing the blueshirt fascists to openly demonstrate hate towards the british (which the IRA was openly combating at the time)

@cluch9 Why do the Irish let themselves be governed by a European superstate if they want to be independant?

@Noddy1690
i would also like to say im not calling it a british proxy government for that old sentiment "blame the brits"
but it IS a british proxy government, and that is where many of the problems in that government lie
there is no true republican party, in a position to win elections, in ireland,
fianna fail party continues to propagate that they are a republican party
HOW!?!?!? how are they in any way trying to set up a social democratic government, similar to that of swedens? they arent
