Yeah, well actually.. a banshee (or bean sí, as they are called in Ireland)is a figure who wails around the house of a person who is about to die. Although, in later versions, her prescence means a person is mortally in danger (meaning they "could" die) or when many of them appear it means someone who is going to die that is holy and good. But they weren't the most scary figure, the real scary Irish figures were the Dullahan and the Cóiste Bodhar (Death Coach).

This is not the myth of the irish people! Im not nessarily ofended or anything, but im irish and i think our stories and spiets are acary enough. they didnt need to go about changin em. Other then that... the story is good.

They probably wanted to be original and I don't think the show claimed it was a popular Irish myth, just one that Eric's grandfather told. He could have made it up himself.
