@71sleek Dummy, 1. The band doesn't decide if they're gonna do a lip sync or not. They go to Europe and "do the circuit" England, France, Germany, Sweden....etc. THE TV SHOW decides if they play live or not. A band like VH on their first tour of Europe isn't going to say "We're not lip syncing" 2. A Van Halen concert was an event, you weren't going to get a note for note redux of the album. It was a party. I wish Roth's vocals were tighter too but, who gives a shit, it was so much fun.

In those days, when high profile shows like this one had bands "play", it was for the sole purpose of selling records. They wanted the songs to sound EXACTLY how they sound on record and didn't trust artists to play them normally. The band IS plugged in AND playing for the studio audience, but you can tell DLR was not happy about faking it either, hence his deliberate non-vocal moments.
