  • june is so sexy

  • 3 people shouldn't have visited this video

  • At the height of his amphetamine addiction. the man is WIRED

  • and pot. That was originally listed in Billboard as part of his bust coming back from Mexico. However, by the time it got to court, the pot charge had disappeared

  • i think june is ah-mazing:)i have a autoharp because of her:)

  • higher than a mother &%$#@ squirel

  • I wish I could find a clip that shows Johnny playing I am a Pilgrim in his entirety. Anybody know?

  • He looks strung out here which is fascinating. He was never pretentious or openly arrogant which I love because of his fame. He was a simple guy who boarded a whirlwind of circumstance that propelled him to a position of greatness even if he never ever realised it.

  • brilliant story by june, the days when women were women, not like the diva trash today.

  • tim robbins just mentioned this clip on tv

  • He´s on speed from his hair to his shoes. No secret ´bout that...

  • @devilrobbie25 Big River is one of the best, John was high a lot of the times he wrote his songs-he may have been high but he was always together on any songs he wrote or sang-love that man

  • You could tell JC was speeding his butt off.

  • John may have been high but can sing a good song as good as ever.

  • @TheCashmobile ....your dead rite didnt he also write big river when he was off his head....his best song in my opinion

  • wtf

  • ok,ok,ok. First of all, I HATE THE CUSSING! 2nd, I don't understand.

  • cash is tweakin

  • Have not read the comments but OMG this is amazing! You can tell JC is a little f'd upped, but at the same time you can just feel this LOVE pouring out of him for June!!!! NEATO clip!! Oh and HI PETE!! Love ya too!!

  • Johnny was wacked on sumpin' that day. God bless June for being there back then. Johnny looks like he is in a death spiral. Because of June we got to hear more from this man for decades to come.

  • yay

  • he looks like many whom were starving long ago

  • gaw lee look at how skinny his legs were.

  • I wish the resolution were better. Thanks so much for posting. Poor June, John looks rough.

  • I'm not implying that Pete is mechanical, I love Pete and his music very much and think he is under appreciated, but It is interesting and worth acknowledging differences between people of different regions and cultural back grounds.

  • Johnny is a southerner Pete is a yank you can tell a difference in manner and demeanor between people from those regions especially back then even more than today..

  • when people from different regions or classes get around each other they are unfamiliar with each others movements it causes a persons organism to become alarmed, because something in the brain and nervous system at a primal level says warning someone different is near, even if your conscious mind says "there is nothing to fear" Northerners are more static and their movements are quicker, they are more mechanical, they speak from higher in their head, southerners are more fluid, talk from chest

  • Johnny is strung out! He is a god

  • Thanks for posting all this music--with the people makin' it.

  • Good lord, Johnny is so strung out he can't stay still for a second.

  • drugs

  • Yeah, the poor ol' guy never completely shook off dope. Marshall Grant says he didn't come clean until 1970, and then for only about 9 years. He eventually wound up at Betty Ford in the mid-80s..

Even in his last years, he refused pain meds for neuropathy (which can be excruciatingly painful) for fear he'd get hooked again.

  • Shit, you're right, he is.

  • I needed that! Thankyou!

  • OMG. I am so embarrassed! I will never post here again! I am not nearly as imbecilic as I appear! LOL. I just skimmed the comments and misread Merle Travis/Haggard. My apologies. I looked up AP Carter and he is attributed to collecting many old Appalachian songs. Somewhere in my house I have a recording of "I Am A Pilgrim" that lists A.P. as the composer...and of course I can't find it now!

  • Correction. A.P. Carter was her uncle.

  • I believe that "I Am A Pilgrim" was written by A.P. Carter, June's daddy. I could be wrong. I didn't verify, so correct me if I'm wrong. It was definitely not written by Merle Haggard.

  • He looks nervous and wired here, right in the middle of his worst period. Great to watch, though!

  • That story that June tells about her teeth being knocked out is amazing. Can you imagine if that happened to Britney spears of Beyonce Knowles or something. It would be front page news and they would be humiliated. But June carried on for the sake of the audience. An ABSOLUTE LEGEND of a women.

  • Check the Byrds version of this out on the "Sweetheart of the Rodeo" CD. Sweet.

  • PS, its not a Merle Travis song, that song is older than time, though Merle Travis has recorded it as well as probably a thousand others...beautiful song, like everything that comes from Johnny Cash...

  • That may be, but Travis had the writing/publishing credits.

  • That song appears on one of the discs in the Unearthed boxed set...

  • He was a lovely man. Have loved his music since the early seventies. Agreat man.

  • There are not too many people who say anything bad about Johnny, he was loved by far more people than he was hated by, if you ever hear someone say anything bad about him just consider the source.

  • I don't believe, from what I'm told by people who knew him, that ol' Johnny made enemies...only friends. But by his own admission and the stories of others who were affected, his destructive behavior impacted many. For years, there were hotels with 'no entertainers allowed' policies because Cash & crew had torn them up. Many of the scars on his face came from trips into the desert, when he'd blindfold himself and turn his Jeep loose, full throttle. Amazing that he lived through that period.

  • I love the song Johnny is singing here, does anyone know which album its on? Thanks for posting this series of videos, although Johnny is probably at his worst here as far as his addiction is concerned, it`s so good to be able to see them. Thanks!

  • The song is "I Am A Pilgrim" written by Merle Travis. Reminiscent of the old Hymn "Wayfaring Stranger". I don't know if it is on a Cash album.

  • The song shares a lot of lyrics with Wayfaring Stranger, which I often heard in church when I was a kid. I heard Johnny perform it sometime back in the early 70s.

  • Johnny Cash was arrested in October 1965 at the El Paso International Airport after U.S. Customs agents found hundreds of pep pills and tranquilizers in his luggage as he returned from a trip to Juarez, Mexico. The Man in Black spent a night in the county jail and later pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor count, for which he paid a $1000 fine and received a 30-day suspended sentence.

I was born in El Paso and remember when he was arrested.

  • jangel47 you have a lot of nerve telling everyone about how Johnny Cash got arrested, we do not need a history lesson man when he gets arrested that adds to his legend as one of the best and still one of the best guitarist of all time.

  • No intent to put down JC. I am 60 and a long time fan. Johnny was a distant cousin of mine, my great grandmothers name was Cash.

  • I am thankful for your comment, Jangel47. John was never secretive about his arrests and talked about that one at length, so I don't think there is anything inapropriate in your mentioning it. Thanks!

  • it might be withdrawal

  • He looks like he is stoned on coke, that causes the jaw movement and the restlessness

  • As far as Johnny said, and he was always very open about his faults, he never did coke or heroin or anything other than alcohol and his amphetamines.

  • @twofortheroad He did write about smoking grass, and once getting high on grass & speed and drunk all at once. His first addiction, in late 50s until about the time his son was born, was on amphetamines. In the late 70s, he was taking speed again, but got hooked on painkillers. He cleaned up for a couple of years and went back to uppers twice, finally kicking them (we think) for good around 1993.

His son wrote that when he wasn't addicted to drugs, he was addicted to women.

  • @jadams128

The important thing is who Johnny Cash was as an artist. It is wonderful to see all three of them youthful and full of life.

  • Wasn't JC busted for amphetamines? Doesn't seem to be too hyper, just the opposite.

  • Yes, he was into amphetamines, and he seems very fidgety to me, not exactly relaxed even if he did take his boots off!

  • What year was this?

  • 1962

  • It doesn't say on the box. It only says the 1960's but I'm pretty sure I read somewhere that it was 1965.

  • this sure is a different side to the man in black...totally stoned!

  • He is so stoned! Look at June's face, poor girl.
