And I wouldn't also underestimate the influnce of Guy Fixsen's genius on these early recordings. The guy had vision. Not for nothing many bands did their best albums with him. What they did without him, before or after wasn't even close. IMO the fact that Cool Breeze or Jack sound like they do is from 50% his output. What a great collaboration it was. There was really no point for Moose in going shoegazey any more. They would only repeat themselves. Could not be any better.
I see a lot of comments about wasted talent etc. I don't agree with it at all. Moose were great in everything they did. Early EP's are superb, XYZ may be the best indie country album I know (still with gazey elements), Honey Bee is amazing LP, LALLAL is probably my most favorite and High Ball Me! their final was damn good. Any style they went, it was always Moose. With songs so crafty that you can still hear new sound here and there any time you play it.
Thanks for posting--this band has been at the top of my list of lesser known shoegazers to check out. You never see their music for sale here in Toronto, Canada, used bins or anywhere else.
@jasonainsworth75 If you want to hear more of Moose or bands like them, look up KEXP.org, they are a commercial free/indie radio station out of Seattle. You can email or call in a request. They play nearly anything of merit, new stuff and old stuff all the time! KEXP! Music that matters! Enjoy!
so under-rated... i never heard moose until 96 and shit if it didnt change my life... nice break from punk rock and grunge.... they were supposed to have made the word "shoegaze" a big deal because the singer looked at his lyrics taped to the stage.
moose, one of the most underrated bands of the last decades.
I recomend hear his albums, XYZ, Live a little, love a lot etc, they evolved his shoegazing sound into a exciting puzle of the most powerfull melodies. I begin to up to youtube these song to you know more about this group
My most heartfelt thanks for making me discover this song. I'm now obsessed by this, playing this on repeat. I had only heard the weak pop stuff this band did later and would have never thought they started in such a brilliant way... what a wasted talent! This song is probably the best shoegazing song ever, some songs of that genre were a bit too ethereal, while here the noise is still matched by a strong rhythm section and how the melody is so minimal and effective, a bit like post punk...
@aneworderfan best shoegaze song? there's alot of stuff thats close to this - Isnt Anything by MBV or the seminal Loveless - also check out Swirlies - all their stuff cept the dance remixes - its all downloadable for free legally on the net, google it) - also check out Boo Radleys' everything's alright forever. I do love Moose though, wont argue they're good! :)
@sizone I love the most of the bands you mention, and many others, I bought many albums back then and I'm a still huge fan of the genre, but this song has that extra power many shoegazing songs are missing... it's like a missing link between post punk and proper shoegazing... There was one band I wasn't aware of back then, Bleach, I've recently discovered them and Headless really comes close to the excellence of Boy. Unfortunately there's nothing on YouTube, but Googling will be useful! ;-)
@aneworderfan shoegaze punk noise? here you go: v=fCUF0lNbDrE or v=B4E9TS-98Lg tell me what you think of those - lots of other swirlies stuff which is really a great crossover in the area of SonicYouth meets MBV.... lots of dissonance and fast tempo. Really, Moose was never close to punk, listen to all their other stuff, this track is an anomaly...
@sizone I like the Swirlies, but they can't beat Boy, but that's because I hear a lot of early New Order here, and I'm a big New Order fan. I know that unfortunately Jack is basically the only other track which sounds similar to this. That whole EP was a miracle (The Ballad Of Adam And Eve is slow but wonderful), but release by release they went Britpop and wasted a really huge talent.
I lived in South London back in the early 90's and saw this band at The Venue in New Cross. I think they opened for Blur. Fantastic night. And fantastic memories. H, Oslo.
