My heart goes out to these kids, again innocent victims of big business. They're born, they exist with no quality of life, and then they die young. And the pain & suffering of grieving parents who have to make the very tough decision as to whether or not take the chance in having another child or to remain childless. Well unfortunately justnobody5192, when dealing with such a massive problem, exposure to extreme radiation, the damage has already been done. Now all that can be done is to limit that damage. The critical time in helping the local population was immediately after this terrible disaster happened. Now, with the Soviet economy growing, they are still responsible, and should employ more resources in tackling the illnesses that arise, especially cancers, ie. meds, speciallists, equipment, etc.

This is why you should not have coal miners run your nuclear power plant, or have them test whether or not they can safely turn off all the coolant system on a generation 1 nuclear power plant. Nuclear energy of generation 3+ nuclear power plants (which would be what would be made if we began construction today) produces nearly no nuclear waste by comparisson, is far more efficient, and has passive safety systems that would prevent a meltdown.

@fermun Nuclear power produces nuclear waste by definition. to enrich uranium (235->238), the world produces 70000 tons of U235 yearly which ends up un DU ammo. you are a brave believer in this "technology" because you are clueless.

@fermun They were actually well trained nuclear engineers. The problem with the plant was the construction, not the workers running it. There was a hot spot in that caused the water coolant to become steam. The turbine that expelled the steam was shut off as part their test. The sensors didn't see the hot spot. The sensors should have seen the hot spot or there shouldn't have been a hot spot. Mistakes happened but the structure should have survived.
