I remember Hurricane Hugo but not first hand . I went through Hurricane Andrew ! Remember living in South Florida , my very first year after moving from Michigan . South Florida was issued a Hurricane Watch for Hugo and then Savhannah,Georgia !
I don't mean to sound crass - but what kind of moron bothers calling 911 in the middle of a violent hurricane? I mean DUHHH.. no one is going to come out and rescue you under conditions like that. Good lord!
the two old bridges that spanned the cooper river at the time were not damaged in the hurricane. the ravenel bridge, that currently spans the cooper river, was not opened until 2005.
That was 20 years ago. I was 7 years old and Andrew was 5. We were safe in Arizona back then. That was frightening. The people had no food, no electricity, nothing for a long, long time. It was like they were pioneers. Think about that.
Very interesting segment. When Darren calls 911 because he was worried about his mother and that she was worried about him as well, it made me smile on that.
If I were the kid, I would want to kill my mom. I would hope his guardian and his mother had the sense to prevent him tying up 911 lines to talk to mommy - at ANY time though especially during a hurricane
Unfortunately, we might be seeing a repeat tonight in Galveston. They are using another high school, in a flood zone, as a shelter of last resort for Ike.
Yes, "Hugo I" was a different segment. That one focused on a family that was in a house when a radio tower fell on it. It's not up, but it aired on Episode 118.
There isnt much that happens up where I live, South Eastern PA (about 30 miles north of philadelphia). I dont think we get hurricanes up here...no earthquakes either...tornados once in a blue moon, maybe a small flood here and there, some lightning storms..actually the lightning storms are a pain in the ass cause the often hit houses and power lines making for one hell of a fireworks show.
1 more thing, i have to agree with the posts referencing Katrina victims placing blame... No one was at fault for the tradgedy besides mother nature. It's happened before, and unfortunatly it'll happen again!
I was 5 at the time, we lived on the Isle of Palms... the bridge they show at 6:22 was the only way to our home. My mom took a ferry back to go see the damage, i was too young to go. I still remember it too we drove all the way to NC and stayed in a motel. I remember the drive back home being CRAZY! We moved back to Mass shortly after that! Mom wasn't a fan of hurricanes! THis video was awesome, thanks for sharing!
I don't understand why Rescue-911 focused solely on Charlestown when Hugo actually made landfall further north of the city, with most of the damage in the coastal areas north of Charlestown - all the way up to Myrtle Beach in the northern part of the State. Remember the strongest winds and storm surge are north of the eye. Stories like that at Lincoln High School occurred all along the coast, yet those are still largely ignored to this day.
Well, McClellanville is part of the CharlestonNorth Charleston Metropolitan Statistical Area. However, I don't consider McClellanville (miles north of Charleston) to be part of Charlestown, yet both parts one and two of the video talk only about Charlestown in relation to Lincoln High School in McClellanville.
Regardless, I was actually commenting about the video's almost exclusive verbal focus on Charleston instead of damage throughout the entire state.
Wow..What an amazing trip down memory lane.I was 6 years old when Hugo hit Charleston.I lived in downtown charleston at the time and remember this storm like it was yesterday.I am shocked to know that only 3 people died in this area from this storm. So many people refused to leave their homes including me and my family. Also there are 2 people in this video that I know as coworkers at Roper Hospital- the nurse and one of the witnesses of the storm. Thanks so much for posting this...Amazing video..
We may not have asked for government assistance but we got it whether you know it or not. I was 6 when this happened, but I remember this like it was yesterday (we stayed like idiots).
We stayed too. I was 16. I remember people selling water out of the back of their trucks for $4.00 a gallon. Jerks! I also remember eating spam...every freakin day. No power for 2 months and cheering when you saw the power truck coming!
Unlike many others in LA, WE, in charleston DIDN't see it as a fault of the government, nor did we go around telling the government to repay us for all we lost. We just picked up the pieces and moved on. THATS how it should be.,
Was that the same Dan Ashley who went on to anchor at KGO in San Francisco? I know he wasn't there during the earthquake in Oakland in 1989, but he was covering the hurricane for WCBD in Charleston, where Hugo hit that city. He has been at KGO since 1995.
To dgendvil: Yes, that is the same Dan Ashley you are referring to. In fact, last year on the 18th anniversary of Hugo, he mentioned that to this day he has a three foot by two foot photograph on his KGO office wall of the eye of Hugo moving over Charleston.
I have not thought about Hurricaine hugo in years. I was stationed at Charleston AFB during this time. I was originally selected to be part of the hurrivac to get the airplanes of the base. My NCOIC pulled me off of that, and said I was mission essential. I had already told my parents I was safe and going OKC, I did not have a chance to tell them otherwie. My Uncle drove from Ga with food and supplies. We were without power for a month. 4 mths latr, my house was repaired
Funny...When Hugo his those of us in Charleston, the blame wasn't racism or the government... We were smart enough to blame the at fault party... Mother Nature.
the school didn't have a second story for them to go up to?
