Heh, Billings stumped me at first. But Red Rock/1991 = quickly recognized. I don't believe I have ever seen the beginning stages shown here on the video, just the wedge portion of its life. Such amazing vortex action. Hell, such an amazing tornado in general. Extremely impressive and historic footage.
@Torn80cj Very likely that happened as it was an F-5 and grass was torn out of the ground. I saw the video which showed the asphalt road ripped up by the Red Rock tornado that was being studied by the storm chasers from the univ. of Okla. I believe.
Doopler radar measured winds above the surface at 260mph. as I recall.
This was part of the same storm system that produced the Andover, KS F5. The Red Rock Tornado had a windspeed of 257-268 mph which at the time, this was the fastest wind speed ever measured on the face of the earth (until May 3 1999). Had it went through a town it would have been rated an F5.
Most experienced chasers thought this tornado was more impressive than the Andover tornado. They will never know for sure but it would have likely been rated F5 if it had hit populated areas.
@trainzrok Some experts believe this tornado was stronger than the F5 Andover tornado the same day. If it passed through urban areas may have been classified as an F5.

I was all prepared to be surprised at a multi-vortex tornado in Montana, until you mentioned there was a Billings and Red Rock in Oklahoma.

Excellent video. Al and I were just south of the tornado as it formed, but you had the better view from the north side.

@soonerk5 I heard the Jarrell TX tornado did the same thing. But I don't know if it was a reliable source or not.

Looks like an EF-3 tornado.
trainzrok 2 years ago
Nope, it was rated an F4. The EF system did not exist back in 1991.

would have been F5 if it hit more structures.
good vid.

Nice footage. There's not much video of this tornado in its infant stages.
Nice!
