Moses and Joshua were among the most brilliant military thinkers of their time. Great warriors. They had a brilliant God to guide them as well. But, Moses being a prince in Egypt would have been taught how to fight. Not to mention among their "mixed multitude" there was probably soldiers. And the striking similarities the Hebrews had to the Habiru seems to point out that they are one and the same, which could mean that Israel had warrior class even before being enslaved in Egypt.
