I think it may be to dampen the sound of his guitar. Kinda like when you palmute the strings. Gives it a thicker/warm sound, if he has very metallic sounding strings for example. To make them less "metallic"

i have to disagree on the "more meaning" bit. you're completely entitled to your opinion, but i think that matt's lyrics tend to be more symbolic and allegorical than jack's, so to you, they may appear to be less meaningful, when in fact they really are. You just have to be willing to understand what the lyrics actually mean. i think if you go and have a listen to some of matt's songs again, such as "unfamiliar faces," then you may have a new opinion.but at least you have good taste in music
