I don't know if UEFA was right to consider the match null and void. Borussia was one of the best teams in the '70s I had watched the 4-2 in Milan on Greek TV (black & white those days!). I never said Ortiz de Mendebil should not have had to ignore Smith's "aggression". If I'd been in Tommy's position, having been cheated out of a European Cup final, I think I'd probably have reacted in the same way. He ignored it because he wanted to get out of there with as little fuss as possible because he'd been bought by Moratti. The people who surely should have been suspended ( and indefinitely, too) were Ortiz de Mendibil and Moratti. You really cant dispute that the ref was bribed here?

Ein Finale im Mai 1972 im Europapokal zwischen Ajax Amsterdam mit Johan Cruyff und Borussia mit Günter Netzer auf dem Höhepunkt seiner Schaffenskraft wäre wesentlich interessanter gewesen als das alternde Inter im Finale. I was 14 in 1971 and very interested in European footbal. I learnt the result next morning before going to school and was very surprised. I don't know if UEFA was right to consider the match null and void. Borussia was one of the best teams in the '70s I had watched the 4-2 in Milan on Greek TV (black & white those days!). Wenn der deutsche Fussball DIES als Sternstunde feiert, dann ist es gar schlecht bestellt um ihn! Ich erinnere mich noch ganz genau, wie ich dieses Spiel im Radio mitverfolgte (ich war damals 10). Inter brach nach dem berühmten Bierdosenwurf gegen Boninsegna völlig ein. Man hatte das Gefühl, die Spieler seien wie gelähmt und die Borussen können den Ball nur so einschieben. Nicht zufällig wurde das Spiel dann wiederholt, und Inter stiess bis in den Final vor.

In the return game, a total catenaccio and Bordon stopped a penalty kick. Game ended 0-0. It was December 1, 1971. As far as your UEFA investigation is concerned, I don't think it's UEFA but the Italian federation and Inter can at most get a small fine. So, DREAM ON!

You're right. Inter won the second Game 4-2 in San Siro and the Replay ended without Goals. This Match were played in Berlin.

@pablotjob Yes...INTER LOST 7-1 and they planned the conspirancy to go to the final...like this years...after 38 years they will go to the final...but only after "won" against Chelsea (4 penalities denied to Chelsea, 2 in the first match and 2 in the second) and Barcellona (4 penalties denied to Barça, 1 in the first match, 3 in the second match; irregular Milito gol in the first match and regular 2-0 by Bojan in second!!!).

I think the 3rd goal in the England-Germany final may well not have been over the line.However, as one who isnt a chest-thumping patriot I'm not really that interested and I agree with the Scots re: the English media's '66 obsession.
However you raise an interesting point in bringing lack of a lawsuit into it. I will say this. Glanville ( though I dont always agree with him) and Botsford are renowned journalists. Their investigations were very damning. Nobody took them to court, did they?

The thing that you aren't able to understand is that there's nothing to dispute: Liverpool was & is a wonderful town & football team, your suspects may have some reasons but without a lawsuit it remains an opinion, respectable but only an opinion... all what you wrote. Contrariwise you've already decided the ruling , unable to accept that mistaken could happen (assuming that there are). I never said Ortiz de Mendebil should not have had to ignore Smith's "aggression". If I'd been in Tommy's position, having been cheated out of a European Cup final, I think I'd probably have reacted in the same way. He ignored it because he wanted to get out of there with as little fuss as possible because he'd been bought by Moratti. The people who surely should have been suspended ( and indefinitely, too) were Ortiz de Mendibil and Moratti. You really cant dispute that the ref was bribed here?

I don't wanna quarrel with anyone and i'm surely not the one that can teach "technicalities", i mentioned only the rule cause the only thing i can find about that event is the free kick, that seems excuted in a regular way. What kind of foul it was, direct or indirect is a decision of the ref and he could be conditionned by the things you suspected. But things like these are not so unusual in football. I agree that he should hadn't to ignore Smith aggression, who had surely to be suspended.

The ref in the Banks-Best incident cancelled the goal because they are the rules. And dont give me technicalities about the ref lifting his arm or not. An indirect free kick was given for an appropriate offence but a direct free kick was taken. Smith kicked Ortiz de Mendibil's legs black and blue but the ref just stared straight ahead. Would any ref accept such treatment if he did not have something he wanted to keep hidden? No, I dont think he would.

5overlord, you doesn't deserve comment, but the truth, witch is made by numbers: in the period between 1962 and 1967 won Inter 3 Italian championship and became 3 times 2nd, won 2 European Cup (1964, 1965), looses a final (1967) and a semifinal (in 1966). They won also 2 Intercontinental Cup in 1964 & 1965. Every Inter fan knows the names: Sarti, Burnich, Facchetti, Bedin, Guarnieri, Picchi, Jair, Mazzola, Peirò, Suarez, Corso. The truth is made by numbers? That does not really apply when the numbers were made by lies. It wasn't only Liverpool who who got stung by Moratti and Herrera's cheating. The same thing happened to Dortmund in the previous year's EC semi-final. You had players suspended by the Italian league for failing drugs test, so it's apparent Herrera had them on stimulents. And Gladbach crushed you 7-1 here, only for the result to be overturned when Beninsegna pretended to be KO'd. Europe's premier cheats.

What's the problem with this game that Liverpool looses in Milan the 12 May 1965? Is it the second goal made by the Spanish forward of Inter Joaquin Peirò? It seems only a masterpiece of his personal cunning: a goalkeeper must even be careful about the position of the opponent forwards but when he lefts the ball he doesn't cares Peirò at all. Aniway it ended 3-0 and not 1-0.

1. He kicks the ball out of the keepers grasp when he has control of it. Cunning, maybe, but also not permitted. There was a famous incident when George Best did it to Gordon Banks and the goal was rightly chalked off. 2. There was an indirect free kick that was hit directly into the net. 3.The ref was bribed, as was laid bare by the investigations of the journalists Keith Botsford and Brian Glanville. He had an ill son, whose expensive treatment was paid for by Moratti, plus the normal 'gifts'.

1) The goalkeeper made 3 rebounds on the ground, at the 3rd (just when ball stands at the ground & not in Lawrence hands) Peirò kicks the ball coming from behind, without a foul, first sideways then into the goal. I dont know why the referee of the match where Best made the same thing to Gordon Banks decided to cancel it.. but the one in Milan seems to be regular! 2) The free kick doesnt seem to be indirect cause the ref doesnt lift his arm over his head keeping in this way (rule 13)!

it was not a dirty trick, it was a violent act by the german crowd. boninsegna was hit by a full can of coca cola, lost his senses and then woke up in the rest-room after being reanimated by the doctor. I would like the ones who said it was a trick to get hit by an object like that thrown from distance and then you ill tell me if it is a trick.

It would be absurd to make a dirty trick at this time, the game stands 2-1 for B.M. and was not still compromised. And all along his career was Boninsegna a fair player and a courageous fighter. The game was played again in Berlin (after the one in Italy that Inter won 4-2) and it ends 0-0. But it remains a masterpiece of lawyer and Inter Vicepresident Giuseppe Prisco witch made possible to repeat the game. Anyway a wonderful B.M & Netzer: I was a fan of them

schön das ihr euch alle noch an dieses geile spiel erinnert aber ihr solltet vlt wissen das es zu diesem spiel keine fernseh-übertragung gab. weder zusammenfassung noch live. gladbach oder inter konnten sich vorab nicht mit den tv-anstalten über die übertragungs-rechte einigen. deshalb ist dieses spiel ja auch so legendär: weil es nur die leute erlebt haben die an diesem abend am bökelberg standen.

Es war aber nicht wegen den torwart Vieri sondern wegen den ausfall von sturmer Boninsegna durch eine Cola-dose die ihm auf dem kopf getroffen haben soll. Am meisten wird es aber in Italien als ein meisterwerk des Anwalt und Inter-Vizepräsident Giuseppe Prisco betrachtet, der vor den UEFA gericht den Fall zum wiederholung des Spieles brachte. Diese war eine wunderbare Borussia u. einen super Netzer, doch Inter war nicht so schlecht wie an jenen einzelnen Abend u. erreichte dann das Endspiel

das war eine mannschaft 11 freunde alle fuer einen einer fuer alle und nicht die scheisse die se heutzutage spielen scheiss legionaere muessen mehr deutsche spieler bei gladbach spielen und nicht andauernd 2 klassige belgier oder daenen oder schweden oder sogaer amis holen mein gott sind wir schon soweit wie beim eishockey das wir das noetig haben.da koennen se auch von der 2 ten mannschaft leute verpflichten und bezahlen und die wurden sich mehr muehe geben als diese verwoehnten legionaere.

ja die war gut die mannschaft mitte der neunziger.die hatten damals aus wenig viel gemacht und jetzt haben se das geld was se damals fuer den effenberg brauchten und holen sich ramsch aus em ausland anstatt das geld sinnvoll zu investieren.traurig traurig manche lernen nie aus fehlern es kann mir keiner verzaehlen .die heutigen spieler spinnen doch alle herum auch der marin ich will bei werder pielen entspricht meiner klasse arschgesicht isser verraeter so wie die ittaker.

ja, da hast Du recht....den marin verstehen ich einerseits aber auch, die neue ( nicht mehr ganz so neu ;-) ) Führungsspitze kriegt´s ja auch nicht geregelt....früher war weniger Geld da und wir hatten auch eine Top-Mannschaft....ich würd den Bonhoff, Hochstätter und Co. vor die Türe setzen...top Fußballer, aber das hat ja nichts mit vereinsführung zu tun.....naja...und frontzeck als trainer...auwei...auf dem platz super, aber als trainer...

Schade, dass Gladbach trotzdem ausgeschieden ist. Ein Finale im Mai 1972 im Europapokal zwischen Ajax Amsterdam mit Johan Cruyff und Borussia mit Günter Netzer auf dem Höhepunkt seiner Schaffenskraft wäre wesentlich interessanter gewesen als das alternde Inter im Finale. Ajax und Borussia damals zwei Mannschaften die absoluten Offensivfussball spielten. Wäre ein sehr interessantes Finale gewesen.
