2. Dr Money was in fact the first doctor to think about these issues in a more serious way. Yet he was still heavily influenced by the prejudice in the field. Even he could not understand correctly the problem! So he acted according to his previous set of critical beliefs, thinking that the nurture (as all the medical staff has understood it) is more important than nature. Wrong!

1. I have read all the comments for this case. I have also read Dr. Money's book "Gay, straight and in-between". I really think nobody has drawn yet the correct conclusion from this tragedy.
Prior to Dr. Money, everybody in the medical world considered the gander identity and the sexual orientation asstable conditions in a person's life.

In 2004. David Reimer killed himself. He was 38 years old. This speaks of the pain he had experienced as a child, the pain that haunted him for the rest of his life.

Who the hell was the circumciser trying to help? He misdiagnosed the twins with phymosis and then burned David's penis to a crisp. It's time to realize circumcision of infants and children is not appropriate. Doctors should be practitioners of the healing arts. Infant circumcision is the surgical sexual wounding, without consent of a perfectly formed, and still developing, healthy organ.

When this story finally came to the public eye following John Colapinto's article in Rolling Stone, many large newsmagazines only reported "the baby lost his penis in an accident" never mentioning circumcision! The circumciser is protected and the child is "blamed" for having an accident. Most of the news coverage and media interest which followed focused on the gender reassignment and wrongfully linked David with intersex cases of natural genital variation.

John Money, who councelled the Reimers through the sex reassignment of their child, is fully vilified for his part in this, but the so-called doctor Jean-Marie Huot who misdiagnosed the babies with phymosis, and then burned David's penis off is given a get-out-of-jail-free-card by a public unwilling to hear of circumcision accidents.

Both so-called doctors are guilty and should have been punished. I am angry about the suffering this family was forced to endure.
I hurt for David, because he certainly had no chance or choice in this entire situation.

Not reported here is that the twin babies were mistakenly diagnosed with phymosis, or tight muzzing of the foreskin (a natuaral condition of teh infant foreskin.) After David's (Bruce's) penis was burned off, his twin, Brian was spared circumcision. Brian's "phymosis" cleared up naturally as it almost always does with infants.

The most sick in this case is that the parents looked for a solution because in thier common sence a boy without a penis will never be a "real" man. Thats whats so sad in this story and causes all these highly overrated gender constructions trouble.

It should be mentioned, the original story was (assumingly) produced by BBC's Horizon program, for its Automn2001-Spring 2002 season. The original episode was titled "The Boy who was Turned into a Girl". Search the BBC website for further details.

Peter Jackson was set to direct a film version after Lord of the Rings but got the money for King Kong instead. Hollywoood politics and the need to protect the status quo says a huge "blockbuster" is preferable to a film would show circumcision in a very bad light.
