Also Duke was segregated at the time. When this game happened there was nothing made of the black white thing until many years later. Haskins made it about race by himself. He also told his players he heard UK players calling them Ni**ers which was an admitted lie by him

Kentucky and Duke were ranked 1-2 in the nation, going into the Final Four. I was rooting hard for Duke in their semifinal, but Bob Verga was weakened by the flu, and of little help in the 83-79 loss. So you'd better believe I was suddenly a screaming hardcore fan of Texas Western the next night in the Final -- as Sports Illustrated called it, it was "GO GO WITH BOBBY JOE", and the college game was changed forever. The film "GLORY ROAD" pretty much nailed the story !

It is just wonderful to relive this game that brought so much joy to El Paso, Texas Western, and especially to my husband who was an alum, and who died 25 years ago this May. We made the trip on the plane with the Miners, and if I can find them, I have photos of Haskins and the tired team on the flight home, and I'll try to get them on You Tube!

This is probably in the Top 5 of greatest moments in the history of sports. This was such an inspirational story when it happened. I remember my dad, who is born and raised in El Paso, telling me this story when I was younger. Glory Road is one of my all time favorite sports movies, too...gives me chills everytime I watch the ending. As far as race relations in sports, this is arguably the most defining moment ever.
