another reason why fangio was so old when he won is when you look at the cars back then, they obviously dont reach nearly the speeds they do nowadays. much less intense back then. not downplaying them in anyway, just saying a reason why there were a lot of older drivers back then.
@tangywangyify car's capable of reaching 350 km/h whit no electronic or hidraulic help of any kind, just a primitive helmet and gogles, sure "much less intense" 110 degrees of heat coming from the frontal engine and knowing that if you crash you die, and another thing, the huge fuel tanks just by your side, and many many other things, the other famous drivers of his time were on their 20's do some research first
@puntano85 how do any of the things you listed add to the physical side of F1? fuel tanks on your sides increase the physical strain how? and if your going to give me this "do your research" shit, then yes of course drivers would be in their 20s, thats when they start, but the reality was, many drivers including fangio started in their 30s even. not many people in their mid 40s could handle an F1 car now, but it was much more common back then for it to happen
@tangywangyify i did not talked about physical aspects, i refer myself to the "much less intense" bullshit you said, those were real men, not athletes whit balls of steels and a huge amount of nerves and determination, and beside they were gentlemans, it's all gone now, yes they drive faster, yes they handle lots of "Gs" and yes they are athletes nowadays, but trust me, it's all gone a long time ago
@tangywangyify and another thing, fangio didn't start at his 30s, he was a mechaninc and started driving really young in argentina, driving long distance endurance and speed open roads races, really man learn something about this guys, they were tough and strong
@puntano85 ok, i was referring to the bullshit in your whole post. i was talking about when drivers started F1 anyway, in which case fangio did start in his 30s
@puntano85 hey dickhead, so much for not caring for what i have to say. how is that trolling, he was born in 1911 and his first race was in 1948. therefore, in his 30s at hist first race you dumb piece of shit
Saludos
Jack Brabham and Stirling Moss are the only people allowed by the FIA to still race in 1960's style racing helmets and overalls. And Stirling Moss has only just retired from competitive racing.
Absolutely electric! Every time I watch old F1, without aero, it makes me wonder why the FIA don't just limit the use of aerodynamic features to a minimum. Then you'd get real racing again.
@rinpielg In a perfect world maybe but, then F1 would not be the pinnacle of racing...IRL or CART would've taken over as the top level of motor racing
You wont see anything like Fangio. He was the best driver of all times. Before going to F1 Fangio was racing all over Southamerica and Argentina. It was amazing races like the last few Paris-Dakar celebrated in Argentina when he always used to win and fixed the car by himself every time he got mechanichal failures. The Fangio vs. both Galvez brothers battles (particulary against Oscar Alfredo Galvez, they called "The Harrier") are epics. In fact, the Buenos Aires circuit is called Oscar Galvez
Superb stuff - which circuit is that - its lovely. Only thing to add to the Fangio vs Schumacher debate is that Fangio never knocked another driver off the track it is a shame we cannot say the same about Schumacher, Senna or Prost. All great champions but flawed in the crucial respect.
But i hate the way ppl discredit current drivers as if driving the current F1 cars is a cake walk. I knw their life has been made a little easier by the paddle shifts but The G force current drivers experience is a lot more than what the old ones used to experience simply case these cars can corner faster. its still physically demanding. when was the last time u lost 2-3 kg after a 2 hr drive? stop pretending like u knw a lot
that was bloody awesome. Around the outside into dandinong road is always specatcular to watch! that is so cool. what legends. Hopefuly australia wont loose the sandown race track. cos look at the history and events that have taken place there haha!
i was there on the saturday and the sunday, i can still recall on the saturday when fangio come out on track on his own and hearing what we thought was a huge truck speeding up the backstraight then seeing it was infact fangio coming over rothmans rise. to see see fangio drifting around the esses was just amazing
you have to remember now, those cars had to be setup for each circuit as all circuits were different. the old nurburging of the 50's was 28 miles one lap. both fangio mercedes would hit at least 190mph on that course, whereas brabhams lotus would of hit over 200mph the downforce wasnt there until 1968-9 but those cars are not much different than the new formila 1 cars, you take all the downforce wings and spoilers off a 2009 ferrari f1 and match it to a 67 lotus 49 and they are the same.
Wow. I can't believe these guys raced in Sandown Park, Victoria - Australia. I live in Mulgrave which is 1 minute from Sandown. Wish I was born to see it lol. They should do exhibitions again.
Please get real, Brabham didn't drive flat-out. W196 had less power, 300+ kg more, higher center of gravity, narrower tires, inferior suspension... There's just no comparision between the two cars, Brabham is superior in every way, and much faster.
Brabham won 3 titles and lost the '67 title by a two points and a few mechanical failure robbed him of one in 1970, aged 44. He started racing in F1 in 1955 and lasted as a competitive driver to 1970 which won races.¨

"Michael Schumacher has insisted Juan Manuel Fangio was a greater driver than himself after breaking the Argentine's record of five Formula One titles."
Schuey knows his place :P
DinglieDonglie 4 years ago 3
Well Fangio's races win to races contested ratio is better than Schumacher's, not to mention Fangio was in his 40's when he won all his titles.
Fangio's win in Nurburgring 1957 is the stuff of legends. None of Schumacher's wins is of that class.

@McLarenMercedes agree totally.

@McLarenMercedes Are you barking mad? You cannot compare these two drivers as they raced generations apart.
How about we just accept them for what they are? Racing drivers with the same passion, to win.
killaoflimmus 1 year ago
@McLarenMercedes I wouldn't agree with anyone better than you right now.
MrAlwayswins 1 year ago
@McLarenMercedes as the experts say you can't compare our era and the era back then. The rules are diffrent, cars are to diffrent and so on.

Not bad for almost 70 years old man and over 20 years old formula one car. Fangio was the greatest driver! It's not more words.

Haha I love that, Fangio wanted to race in short sleeves but safety regulations made him wear long sleeves! That's really gonna help in a crash!
