Another thing you can do, and I'm not sure if this works on the 4th gen, is to hold the center button/menu and when it resets, hold the center button and "play." I'm not sure what this one does, but it activates "disk mode," on my 2nd gen Nano. To get out of this diagnostics menu or "disk mode," simply reset your ipod by holding the center button and menu again.

It's just a diagnostics menu. It works on pretty much all iPod Nanos, maybe not on the 5th gen, I've personally never tried. It works on my old 2nd gen though. It's mainly to test and make sure your iPod's screen/audio are working properly, and you can't save any settings to the actual iPod Menu. If your iPod ever stops displaying a certain color, or if you're not sure if the sound is working properly, you should go to this menu. It's also a good idea to do this when you first get your iPod.

this isnt technically "hacking" the iPod. its more of a way to access the firmare of the iPod and edit some of the values.

I was hoping this would give you a Region Menu which then allows you to disable the EU volume limit and make the iPod Nano 5G (the one I have) output at full "US" volume, but no, it's just a basic factory diagnostic mode with very little use. What a shame!

My cousin told me Apple is planning a disk mode and diagnostic mode for the iPod Touch. However, this is for the 2G and 3G only. U reset the Touch, and press and hold the volume down button for diagnostics, and the volume up button for disk mode. It's probably not true, but with so many reprts of faults for the Touch, Aplle may consider it.

I said Apple is PLANNING a way ti simply and easily go into those 2 modes. Yeah, the iPod touch already has a diagnostic mode, and it can be accessed if it was shipped that way or by hacking the systems CPU.

Apple was wanting to add an update to allow this freely, because people wanted Disk Mode, and needed help to fix errors.

The Shuffle couldnt be fixed easily because of no screen. VoiceOver helped, but they forgot helpign the Touch.

It requires u to reset ur ipod, which cause the system to do a full reboot, which erases all ur settings. When u turn off ur ipod normally, the system shuts off the power, but the OS is stil loaded. resetting does a full complete reboot. Pressing these special buttons when rebooting boots up that OS, the Diagnostic OS.

Not really a "secret" menu. It's iPod Diagnostics for testing of each aspect of display and sound as well as control. But since it's not found in the Apple guides online, it's pretty secret to anyone who doesn't know about it.

Oh. I figured it out. The wheel selector doesn't work, you have to just click the right arrow to move down the menu items.

I can get into the ipod diagnostic menu but it wont allow me to select anything except the very first item in the menu. Once I am in the menu the wheel selector doesn't work any longer. I can only select the first item from the menu, or leave the diagnostics screen. Anyone else have this problem?
