He creates a hit song....... WITHOUT EVEN TRYING. GE CAN'T EVEN READ MUSIC, NEITHER CAN I AND I PLAY 5 INSTRUMENTS AND I COULD NEVER COME UP WITH SOMETHING LIKE THAT!!!!!! D:
@MyTaylorSwiftLove13 i have a form of autism and i cant read music. i play a bunch of musicial instruments. the didgeridoo, guitar, piano, keybor, cangas, bongos, drums, native flute, native drum, pretty much any instrument. with a few excptions. anyways i to could never come up with anything as amazing as clocks. and i;m a musician i play at a coffie house.
It's kinda true, ya know. I write songs by fucking around on my guitar, and it works. The only exception is when i write blues, then i'll work around a scale or something like that, but except for that, just messing around like chris says. :D
Reading and Writing music may not be part of writing a song but I have found (Doing a degree composing course atm) that it helps to understand why a piece sounds good, however most the pieces I have written have come out like Chris Martin says... just messing around
wait. Did Chris just say he doesn't read music? Who else in mainstream rock does not know how to read music? He gives me inspiration because I can't read music but I want to be a musician.
@ttttrigg3r mate the beatles couldn't read music lol. Look up most of the succesful acts in pop and rock and I wouldnt be surprised if 70-80% couldn't read music. Also there's an old saying that 'everyone has at least one hit song inside them'. Go for it!
what waaaat he cant read it. and all this time i said i need to learn it well. lol it doesnt matter if i did or not it super hard for me to even understand his musical thoughts lol
@kus2ganteng Reading music is mainly good for playing other peoples music, which is much better for you if you try doing it by ear. If he did concentrate on reading music and playing other peoples songs, he might have become a different kind of musician and maybe wouldn't have the ability of writing in such a natural way.
@Bitta32 I actually don't remember which documentary it was from, but it could be from "The South Bank Show" - I couldn't find the whole show on YouTube anymore, but I didn't search too much so give it a try!
@Bitta32 I recorded a documentary called "Viva Coldplay" and this bit was in it. I don't know if you can find it anywhere else, but I recommend that one to you, it's really good :)
You don't have to read music just know the chords for C D E F G A B sharp, minor, flat and you can sound like a pro with any song. Piano is the best instrument to start with. then you play by ear with your own taste and rythem. It's not hard to do, but if you practice you can entertain a lot of friends and family. Throw away the sheet music! It was too frustrating. You can find chords for any song in any search engine. I learned how to play 15 songs in the last year using this technique.
Now thats GANGSTA WOW..................ILOVE COLDPLAY and its funny how he keeps going with the song after he plays clocks and stops in the middle talks then picks up where he left off amazing
@zowi1 He's not joking. Music is a matter of the head and heart. That's why we "love" it, not just understand it. Notes on a page are just place holders for the actual musical ideas. You can develop an understanding of harmony, melody, rythm and chord progressions without knowing the specific "language" of Anglo-Western music notation. I personally do read, but I'm always aware that you can become so focussed on being technically correct that you lose the passion you started with.
@1nOnlyBeatlemaniac lots of Good Artists can't! I personally know people that can't but it doesn't stop them from playing the piano or even teaching it at a high level. I guess music is just in their blood and comes from their heart rather than from a piece of paper!
@1nOnlyBeatlemaniac yeah, he learned the piano by assigning a number to every key and then he simply would write the music by making number sequences. Pretty impressive stuff if you ask me
@1nOnlyBeatlemaniac Few popular musicians do; such as Lennon, McCartney, Hendrix, Clapton, Bono, and the list goes on. I guess it's just unfashionable in pop music.
@da1976stone kinky!me too his fingers produce beautiful music i want to touch his piano! if i only had a day to be with him beside me well id love that even if we didnt go all the way i wonder what his lips feel like cos he sings beautifully
I would have never imagined he can't read music. His mom was a music teacher .....

Now that IS the way to come up with a great song... I cant read music/notes either, have never made any own material, BUT I know exactly how he meant.
Its more passion and love NOT following any rules with instruments and such. I think most Coldplay songs are hits, that catches my interest.
