Reading and Writing music may not be part of writing a song but I have found (Doing a degree composing course atm) that it helps to understand why a piece sounds good, however most the pieces I have written have come out like Chris Martin says... just messing around

If he did concentrate on reading music and playing other peoples songs, he might have become a different kind of musician and maybe wouldn't have the ability of writing in such a natural way.

You don't have to read music just know the chords for C D E F G A B sharp, minor, flat and you can sound like a pro with any song. Piano is the best instrument to start with. then you play by ear with your own taste and rythem. It's not hard to do, but if you practice you can entertain a lot of friends and family. Throw away the sheet music! It was too frustrating. You can find chords for any song in any search engine. I learned how to play 15 songs in the last year using this technique.

@zowi1 He's not joking. Music is a matter of the head and heart. That's why we "love" it, not just understand it. Notes on a page are just place holders for the actual musical ideas. You can develop an understanding of harmony, melody, rythm and chord progressions without knowing the specific "language" of Anglo-Western music notation. I personally do read, but I'm always aware that you can become so focussed on being technically correct that you lose the passion you started with.
