The title is totally misleading. She just said that English is a difficult language to learn which is a pretty common comment from anyone whose native language is not English. It's just like native English speakers that say "Ugh, Spanish is such a difficult language to learn!"

@nathann2746 Actually English is commonly recognized as a particularly difficult language to learn as a second one, specifically because of, as she mentions "so many rules made to be broken... sometimes." English is far more inconsistent than other tongues and borrows from many which makes its structure unique and eclectic. Romance languages have nearly identical structure and even similar vocabulary so its easier to learn French if you already know Spanish or vice versa.

A lot depends on context to determine spelling or pronunciation which hard because even simple words can have many different unrelated meanings. EG my German friend got confused with the word "left"- left hand, he left, left over, left out, left it there - when he knew opposite of "right" (which can mean correct, exactly,or... )

I'm from the British working class, and yet I'm always told I speak quite 'poshly'. However, I appreciate the accents of Britain, one of the great things about British English is the range of accents, the colour of the language in Britain is unrivalled in the rest of the English speaking world. The title is indeed misleading, but the notion that British English is somehow more proper is as ridiculous as would be a claim that the German Angles were the only people who spoke the language correctly. (The Angles who moved to the British Isles were *emigrants*.) At this stage, the significance of British English is primarily historical (like that of the Angles), and American and Indian English are far more significant as *living* language.

Compared to other languages like German and Russian, the grammar and sentence structure of English is very simple and logical. English is difficult mainly because the spelling is so inconsistent. Even native English speakers have trouble with spelling -- just look at the Internet!

BTW, Spanish is considered one of the easiest languages to learn.

I've been told by original English speakers and those learning that English is hard to learn. Being the number of words that have the same spelling but dual meanings being one of the main complaints that I hear.

To be honest, I think English is one of the easyer languages to learn. I am bilingual, French/English, who was educated in French. I never took an English class in my life and learned English from 4 sources: talking with my dad, reading comics, listening to music and watching TV. So I think I can say that English is easyer vis-a-vis French.

"American" is a dialect (and a general one, at that) while "English" is a root language.

I speak English, but I can do so in a large variety of dialects, including various U.K. dialects.

There are some fundamental differences between dialects, including pronunciation, spelling, and the organization of sentences. Grammar differs between dialects.

I couldn't speak English Rhyming Slang or the Cajun dialect if I tried. They're just too different.

What's interesting about the way English is spoken in the United Kingdom is that most regional dialects and accents have persisted even in the modern age of mass communication. The US has maybe 6 or 7 distinct regional accents. The UK has dozens. Ask an American actor if he can do an English accent. If the actor is any good at dialects, he'll say, "Which one?"

What's funny to us Yanks is when a British actor does a bad American accent.
