The title is totally misleading. She just said that English is a difficult language to learn which is a pretty common comment from anyone whose native language is not English. It's just like native English speakers that say "Ugh, Spanish is such a difficult language to learn!"
@nathann2746 Actually English is commonly recognized as a particularly difficult language to learn as a second one, specifically because of, as she mentions "so many rules made to be broken... sometimes." English is far more inconsistent than other tongues and borrows from many which makes its structure unique and eclectic. Romance languages have nearly identical structure and even similar vocabulary so its easier to learn French if you already know Spanish or vice versa.
@nathann2746 By contrast, there isn't much help from anything learning English except experience because it isn't even consistent in the inconsistency of the rules. A lot depends on context to determine spelling or pronunciation which hard because even simple words can have many different unrelated meanings. EG my German friend got confused with the word "left"- left hand, he left, left over, left out, left it there - when he knew opposite of "right" (which can mean correct, exactly,or... )
Rita Moreno is such a legend and a classy one at that. I grew up watchng her on The Electric Company and in my adult life watched her on Oz and I could never take my eyes off of her! She is a facinating actress and person! They don't make em like her anymore!

Actually I'm a Brit & think the language should be simplified to give beginners an easier start, then they can get more complex once fluent.
@NewYorkFlavour are you kidding? she can sing, dance, and act. she made 130 episodes of electric company each year! I would hardly call her mind tiny and pathetic!
@ViolinRobert LOL, so she's artistic - being able to sing, dance, and act doesn't make one intelligent necessarily. I just hate to hear someone bag on such a fine language as English.
what with people saying that english is hard just because some words are similar, or they are written in a way that brakes its own rules?... "OMG english is so hard because is has HOMONYMS" ... oh please i dont know one language that doesnt has those, actually i wish english was a little more complicated and had more rules so you wont have to use so many words when you want to specify quantity, gender among other things
I'm from the British working class, and yet I'm always told I speak quite 'poshly'. However, I appreciate the accents of Britain, one of the great things about British English is the range of accents, the colour of the language in Britain is unrivalled in the rest of the English speaking world. Based on the fact that there are over 4,000 distinct acknowledged accents in the UK, and only around 500 in the US, 270 in Australia and Canada, 120 in NZ. What's wrong with dialect? Absolutely nowt!
Your title is completely wrong. It is personal and misleading because you do not understand. The Brits would tell you that you do not know how to speak English properly. They should know.
The title is indeed misleading, but the notion that British English is somehow more proper is as ridiculous as would be a claim that the German Angles were the only people who spoke the language correctly. (The Angles who moved to the British Isles were *emigrants*.) At this stage, the significance of British English is primarily historical (like that of the Angles), and American and Indian English are far more significant as *living* language.
but one she forgot. bact to the beginning... english = the wanderers of europe. english = the first roman empire. at the time of je-sus je-sus = [gods words to him] to see and beat the evil among mankind. to cross the faiths of others unto himself. jesus was a christian not a jew. he had a latin mother. abra-ham = my image adam = i give eve = eva = a year of. kane = spite able = capable moses = washing. boy found in a basket on the river mara with no name.
Excuse me...Jesus was a Christian? His mother was Latin? I think He was raised an Aramaic Jew by Jewish parents. He was from Galalie, I think so... How could he have been a Christian, there were no Christians be fore He was crucified were there? I may be wrong, so would someone help out here?
Toth.. his religion was jewish but he like many muslims & christians in the middle east are middle easterns. You claim you speak arabic. If you knew the history you would know many spanish words are ARABIC. Your inablility to understand her comment is proven in your heading. Ever been to Dubai? I lived there for 2 months. Before you critique language study it and you will know there are only dialects and dialects continuuas. Rita is one heck of a great star. The first to win all awards!
Compared to other languages like German and Russian, the grammar and sentence structure of English is very simple and logical. English is difficult mainly because the spelling is so inconsistent. Even native English speakers have trouble with spelling -- just look at the Internet!
BTW, Spanish is considered one of the easiest languages to learn.
german is somewhat similar to english, russian i don't know.. but if u say spanish is one of the easiest languages is because you speak it right?
i mean, i dont think u know jack ass of what your talking there bud.. because spanish grammar is much more complex then lame american english.. even a 10 year old can learn that gibberish from watching movies.. jizz
i think english is the lamest language ever.. everyone can speak it...
English IS a difficult language to learn. For example; rough, cough, bough, through. All have "ough" in them and all are pronounced differently. Or how about "to, too and two"?
@MeAndLenaZ If we spelled "two", "to", and "too" the same, the language would be HARDER. Also, all of those silent letters reflect the original pronunciation of the language, and our spelling better reflects the etymology of a word.
The english is the world language, but not "number 1"'.The english is the most succesful, not the most beautiful language in the world! The west Germanic language families are sucks. But the english is so much better than the german language.
I've been told by original English speakers and those learning that English is hard to learn. Being the number of words that have the same spelling but dual meanings being one of the main complaints that I hear.
At any rate just take it as a compliment or maybe she's just saying it's hard for her. I don't see what the big deal is no matter how you look at her comment.
she doesn't sound like she's complaining, to me. Just stating a fact that's true to herself. I have a friend, though, that thought english was really easy to learn.
She was tossed in "to sink or swim," as she says, and she made it, and her English is flawless. They shouldn't coddle kids, and it's not what parents want for them: total immersion. If you don't know English in this country, you're automatically underclass.
You must be looking in the mirror. She looks fabulous and her smile is sincere and genuine. Perhaps it's a look you don't experience much given your rude remarks....
To be honest, I think English is one of the easyer languages to learn. I am bilingual, French/English, who was educated in French. I never took an English class in my life and learned English from 4 sources: talking with my dad, reading comics, listening to music and watching TV. So I think I can say that English is easyer vis-a-vis French.

I'm English, but I have to say that I think the Americans speak it better. But it does piss me off when they call it American cause it's not American it's English.
