over produced, takes away the essence of the lament, great voice though, but doesn't alter the OTT production, way to much going on and frankly it sounds to me like he is reading the lyrics while singing, Bryan isn't quite in the 'Zone' and he's way to self conscious, making sure he gets those warbles that he's famous for.. I can say that because i know him, and he owes me a pint too.. Bryan.. That'll be a stella thanks.
if bryan ferry wasn't there, i don't know where i would have gone. i know that will make sense to anyone who reads this message; he's my idol, my dream, my best friend, my companion. He's an icon who walks along among the world of the real and the unreal, he's an enigma. But more than that, Bryan is just a man who makes music so beautiful that all you want to do is have it in your head no matter what you do or where you go or who you see. He's a walking angel.
The album cover is classic Ferry / Roxy Music. He / they sure love their sirens. Romanticism is one of the pillars of rock, and nobody does it better than Mr. Ferry.
Mr. Bryan Ferry is the man of my dreams. When the world gets heavy I ask Bryan to sing for me. He never disappoints.
The first time I saw him in concert in Northern California, I thought no mortal man could possibly live up to my expectations, yet my Bryan surpassed them. I will be at your concert on October 15 and as near to you as I possibly can!
@toomuchrose In your opinion :) That is the beauty of music, that subtle interpretation can be taken by different people.I appreciate your opinion, but the lack of nuance to your perspective and the three mentions of human waste.......well sometimes its all about the music.....a beautiful song cover, in any case by the maestro of smooth :)
I respect Ferry's covers because he stays true to the original vision of the song. Take "Jealous Guy", for example, he left that completely intact---just added the glam spark that his voice always has.
Approaching the songs of Buckley have tried many. Some more than others have contributed their poetry extolling the expansion of this song. What makes Ferry Simply, in this song makes it light and returning light to a melody full of stsso time ... as only he can do.
Oh Bryan I love your new album, and particuarly this song. You are like bottle of wine, getting better and better by the years go by! I"m your greatest fan on planet earth!!!
Sincerly, I have nothing against Mr. Ferry in general, but I get very angry the first time I heard this. I have the impression that the very emotional substance of the song is gone away. Too sophisticated and sterile. I love the original version by Tim Buckley and I want This Mortal Coil's one to be played at my funeral. Here, I just have the impression to listen to a Coktail party's ending song. But, despite all that, I can assure you that I have a life. ;o)
Beautiful cover of a great song. Bryan definitely made it his own and, in my opinion, improved upon it. "Olympia" is a wonderful album. If you don't have it, GET IT.
Well, everyone familiar with Bryan's personal and musical history (Jerry Hall, his reinterpretation of other artists material) knew that eventually this one was going to happen. 35 years in the making and worth the wait, it captures the mystical spirit of the lyrics in such a haunting way that it was surely inspired by the private events in the late 1970s that transformed Ferry's life and sound. Another perfect example of BF's genius.
Yet again this unparalleled genius takes a very good song, re-embraces it, re-develops it and stamps it with his own unique brand endorsing the fact that I first knew 40 years ago when I was 14, surely this man is The Son Of God
@doffincodger Ferry's covers have always been a puzzle. The songs are deeply substantial (for pop-rock) but the covers have typically been stylishly vacuous.
Still, if you're going to do stylish vacuousness, Kate's your girl. ;-)
this whole album is glorious. such a romantic. beautiful voice, beautiful man. it doesn't get any better than this. Bottle of wine conversation.... need i say more...?
The Master's re-embracement and re-development of this one is quite remarkable really, on 9th February 1981 my mind was overtaken by his overwhelming tribute to John Lennon, which became my favourite song of all time, until now, the best compliment that I can pay this one is that it is running a dead-heat, Please Bryan incorporate this into your forthcoming planned Roxy sets for your 2 gigs in Glasgow at the end of January, surely this man is The Son Of God.
Horriblr and dissapointing...Cocteau twis did a way better job than this guy nuff said

Great song, originally by Tim Buckley but previously covered by, among others, This Mortal Coil, which IMO was the best version.
Ferry makes this sound exactly like "Avalon". Well, that's his trademark sound, so he's wise to stick with what he knows works.
Nice.
