My male rat would lie on his back for hours at a time. He'd sleep and even eat like that. Finally, I trained him to flip on his back on command, and he would. He positively loved having his fat belly rubbed, too. The Only time I've been bitten by pet rats (unlike mice and hamsters) is if they mistakenly thought I had food in my hand and I got a little nip ( their eyesight isn't very good)

Rats are just as tame and trainable as dogs and are being found to have similar genetic make up as humans, which is why they are tested on so much in labs. You can potty train them and train them to do tricks. They are very ideal for young children.

Maybe if you let it sleep during the day like it is supposed to instead of bothering it, it would have lived longer. If a rat is still while you touch it, it means it wants to sleep.
Zenek was smart enough to show if he wanted to play or sleep and believe me -- when he wanted to sleep he his so deep noone could find him. He loved this play Mr/Ms/Mrs Greenpeace...

@dreamera1 Rats get tumors and cancer cause of genetics. In shops they're kept in cages with their own sisters and brothers and they procreate together.
not to mention that a large portion of domestic rats are descended from lab rats who were line bred(intentionally inbred for their traits) to be used in testing on cancer....so it is a very high likelyhood that you will see cancer or other complications crop up later in life
@dreamera1 When I took my rat to the vet to get its tumor removed the vet said that tumors are common in fancy and albino rats, spaying or neutering them at an early age is the best way to avoid tumors. It doesnt have to do with bedding and litter.
@dreamera1 while bedding is a factor in respiratory illness it had little or no connection to cancer which is more commonly affiliated with line breeding
