I remember hearing this song when I was 5...that was the first time I ever thought of music as "music." Still listening to them almost 13 years later.
Never thought this song had a video, so cool! I probably would have liked this song a lot when I was 5, but had no idea at the time about this band. Well not counting the Moving Pictures songs I heard on the classic rock radio, that I thought were by Heart since Geddy Lee sounds like a girl.
@satamique That honor goes to Vapor Trails. I can say the worst Rush album ever. I only like maybe four songs on it. The four I do like were better on Rush in Rio, R30 and also in their remixed state on Retrospective 3. Given that VT was their first album after Neil Peart's tragedies I give them benefit of doubt as Snakes and Arrows was best album since Test For Echo (which had no weak moments in my view).
@Midnaslove Some tunes like "Ceiling Unlimited" sounded like "I Will Follow" by U2, I think the title track so-to-speak sounded musically like Tantric's one hit "Breakdown" which was popular at the time VT was recorded.
Neil's daughter accompanied him on much of the Test for Echo tour. This song was most definitely written before his wife and daughter died. They were originally going to take a couple of months off after this tour and jump right back into the studio to write a new album. They had enough musical material to make Test for Echo a double album, but they did not want to hurry or force the lyrics. Alas, we'll never know what that album would have been like.
I love this song and music Video! Rush is such an awesome band! From what I can understand, this song was written either before or after Neil's wife and daughter passed aweay. Very good song, by the way.
@Lakerloon yeah the way I see it is you can listen to your rap and all that! BUT at the same time people NEED to listen to rush to understand that they're being cheated by the music there listening to with just "simple beats" it's actually kinda sad!
Does anyone else besides me hear an underlying sense of sadness in this song, specifically about how each half of the world is disconnected from the other, "like a torn up photograph" and how each half is trying to "reach the other half". It sounds like if only the world could be one. Excellent song.
as with every other RUSH song....its great! HAIL THE HOLY TRINITY THAT IS RUSH! thinking mans rock. been a fan for many many years and always will be!
I've always been a fan of RUSH.....I'm also a singer song writer a style some what different to hard rock but still like to think that my musicianship has been influneced by RUSH's music!!! If anyone is interested in having a listen, visit world wide web myspace dot com forward slash darrencinque
@Davism38 I'm OBSESSED with Rush and I haven't heard this song. That's because I'm mainly into their '70s stuff. Imo, I wish they kept writing epics, but as stated on Beyond the Lighted Stage, their lives started falling apart.
@Ryu12543 Definitely check out some of their newer stuff. I love their old classics and obscure songs from COS, Kings, etc. But when I went to see them on the Time Machine Tour, I read Neil's write-up in the tourbook. Apparently they are looking at going back to their progressive roots on this next album. He gave hints at the whole concept album idea. You can kinda make a connection between the two singles Caravan and BU2B. Those are supposed to be the first 2 songs on the next record.
@RushFanatic87 My mom actually has all the rest of them. Snakes and Arrows was pretty good. I loved Leave That Thing Alone live too, Geddy kicks ass on that song.
this is great, but the one I really like from TFE is "Totem"... "I believe in what I see, I believe in what hear, I believe that what I'm feeling changes how the world appears".... Mr. Peart as his usual best!
Under rated and overlooked tune. Not as "progressive" as some other classics, but good composition and great lyric. The album it came from (T4E) I don't care for as much as the preceding effort (Counterparts, a personal favorite) but heck it's still a Rush album! As of next year, I will have been a fan for 30(!) years. Where does the time go - time stand still, indeed, wish it could sometimes. But so very glad they are still around, three decades later on.
In order to truly know Rush and truly love them....you ought to look into their politics.
Neil bases a lot of his lyrics on the writings and philosophy of Ayn Rand. She is quite remarkable though she passed away many years ago. They even dedicated one of their albums to her.
They believe in the live and let live school of thought. That force is the providence of tyrants and little children. This has made me love them all the more and given me an insight to them that most fans don't have!
This is a solid album and this is wonderful piece of work. Like a lot of other people, I've been a Rush fanatic forever and then discover remarkable pieces that I somehow missed. The latest was 'Peaceable Kingdom' on Vapor Trails. I don't understand how the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame inducts that skanky tramp Madonna and yet continues to shun these remarkable - and genuine - artists.
I remember them playing this video on the backdrop behind the band on tour....AWESOME stuff! One of my favorite songs from this album, and there are many good ones!
This song is good; instead of being a kid fan when this one came out, I was a cohabiting American graduate student mother in England with some German guy graduate student mechanical engineer who has a knack for programming computers...our baby is a little over a year old. Its not like that now, but this song is still good.
Someday, when Rush is gone, a younger generation is going to re-discover Rush, and their lyrics about trying to be a decent human being in a world that has no time for it. Call me a fantic, a fan-boy, whatever, but I have raised my own son on the principles of a rock music lyricist. Truth is truth, no matter the vessel that carries it.
@RallyCat909 no words to describe being a true rush fan...there are us....and there are the rest of the world who dont get nor will they ever get what they dont know they are missing...
This song showed that they could still do a good straight up rock song and still have something to say. Test For Echo is a great album and definitely could rock...in the Rush style.
rush is like a serial killer they want to be caught................they have their mark now they want to be caught!!!! they are the ones who have been spreading havoc all across this great divide ....now I want answers!!! who is thIS BAND That SPEAKS GREAT THINGS AREBYOU FOR REAL!!!
@gmmakesmehurl I bought it, greatest Rush CD to date i.m.o. (2004 re-master doesn't do a whole ton from the original master but I suggest getting the '04 re-master.)
I'm surprised. A lot of versed Rush fans I know haven't, either. I knew most of the Rush singles previous to this album but as someone born in 1983 I wasn't really truly exposed to Rush in the mainstream - Test for Echo got just enough airplay for me to get hooked to this album and the rest, as they say, is history. AWESOME album.
@OUtsidethenine4eva Its 14 years old, but if you missed it for whatever reason then you're perceiving it as new now. This is normal, just like 20 year olds reading Plato for the first time in 1980 or 2010 even. Ya know Plato is from before Mozart, if that tells you anything...before Zeppelin, before Rush.
Who plays these Videos certainly not Mtv this much is for certain.
