I think they do it as a sign of respect for those who've done good things, like instead of giving them a title such as..umm...destroyer of combines? They just call him by his last name, I think it means that simply his last name can be used as a sign of respect.

@Turtles9788 That is true ... but as it was mentioned by the vortigaunts in hl2 when you use the E-key on one of them they mention that they remember Freeman and can't forgive him for those who he killed but out of respect for freeing them and helping the resistance(rebels) which they are a part now they think of him as an ally and hero.

Nothing really "surprises" you. There are only normal zombies in enclosed spaces, fast zombies are always seen from afar, and out of the three poison zombies there, one is in the middle of a large arena-type space, and the other two only come out when you're on higher ground.

Ravenholm itself was creepy, but the zombies were scarier in Sandtraps/HighWay 17, because the poison zombies were in cramped spaces and the fast zombies pop out of nowhere...

There were most likely miners, refugees, or hippies down there. Headcrabs trickled down and infected the populace, and with no way for the zombies to get out they were trapped there.

it's the guardian... there is one in nova prospekt in hl2 also....

The glowing one is referred to as a Guardian or Queen... it is tasked with defending the larval chamber. The non-glowing one that was featured in HL2 is a regular Guard-tasked with fending off attackers and intruders at the surface.

Civil protection are humans that have undergone mind control, the combine race is from some far away galaxy. you actualy get to see a few examples of the species at the end of HL2, as your taking the prisoner carier thing up to Breens office, you see alien bug like things, they are the actual combine.

To clarify the "Combine" refers to a conglomerate of races under a banner. Besides the Advisors all "Combine" on Earth are part of the Terran arm of thier Military. Thus those "Combine" are simply modified humans. Civil Protection refers to the police force of the "Combine" and are unmodified humans who have been indicted.
