Zebra is like taking Supertramp, YES, Journey and all of the old super groups and mixing them all together! Great vocals, acoustics and arrangements! Thanks for posting!
first time i heard this song/saw the vid, MTV was still a baby. i was in 'HIGH' school, skippin' that day cause' i wasnt in the mood to learn anything on such an awsome day.......
WHOA!!!! Fricking ZEBRA!!!! I used to have this vinyl album and listened to it over and over, but in the ensuing decades, I forgot they even existed. Now I have to go try to find all the other bands I loved but forgot about. I'll start by searching for New England...
Takes me back to my Long Island days in the late 70's. Great memories! Zebra's lyrics are profound and their music rocks. I'm much older now but listening to this music by Zebra makes me feel young again.
@karlmoles65 My reaction exactly. I was a bit stoned when I first heard this on the radio. At first I thought it was late Zep, but by the chorus I realized it wasn't. It then became my quest to figure out what this song was before it ended and I never heard it again. I googled the "animals in their zoo" line, but I was having trouble finding my place in the lyrics until just as Randy let loose with "WHO'S BEHIND THE DOOOOOOOOOOORRRRRRR?" 'Twas a spiritual moment.
@SaskatoonSquire Wasn't any google for me to go to the night I first heard this. I was 17 and it was 1983. It was one of the most life changing musical experiences I ever had. It set the template for so much of what I love in music even to today.
i think they have some nice sounds..like zeppelin they nice arrangements ...its great song..i would say they copied a bit..remeber zeppelin and blues artists created this kind of sound
I loved Zebra when they came out, I was even willing to endure a Loverboy concert to see them, then the lead singer got laryngitis and the didn't play. Talk about bummed. Not only did I miss them, but Loverboy played extra long to make up for it.
They never came back to my little corner of the world again, so far as I know.
A decent song. LOL at anybody that would think to compare a band that went nowhere (touted as the next led zeppelin) to bands like Zep. I had this album when it came out, couple of decent songs on it but come on. Obviously can't compare to the body of work of even a band like Y&T. Sorry if you don't like the truth, deal with it. I didn't say they suck so don't get your panties in a twist
@sk8erghost2010 yes sir.. this is a great song. makes me sick seeing all the childish cussing from other comments on it. if people dont like it then dont listen but the cussing is really ignorant. GREAT SONG! :)
@MrLatour48 Go fuck yourself. Zebra is an amazing band, and if you don't appreciate the fact that they have worked their ass off to get a loving fan base, then get the FUCK out!
I remember the first time I heard Zebra, I was on vacation right before my enlistment in the army. I was at the beach listening to the Beatles, and the local AOR station played Lulaby, and then they played Tell Me What You Want. So rocking, reminded me of Rush or Triumph.
We were born in the best time in world history with music like this, folks. I got this CD and am never, ever letting go of it. This track is my all-time #1 favorite and has been since I first heard it. Absolute, supreme perfection. CRANK IT!!!
And what the heck is wrong with being 'similar' to Rush or Led Zeppelin? Aren't two of the greatest bands ever? So, you would prefer them to be more like Milli Vanilli? Damn! We have such a lack of great groups and when one tries to be good, it immediately gets pummeled because they 'sound like someone else'... If I like metal, I'll have tons of songs that are similar because they are all metal. If I like Rush and Zep, I'll probably have Zebra songs too because I like "THAT TYPE" of music. So?
@SomeoneCommenting I agree. However, I will say if I was to compare trios, I would compare Zebra to Triumph. Both led by multi talented front men. Randy and Rik Emmett were great singers and guitarists. I put RIk ahead (never saw a better guitarist live) and Triumph had longer legs in years, but I love them both. Zebra's only problem was they packed all their tunes into their first album after years and years of compiling and largely ran out of gas after this album.
@SomeoneCommenting You re correct about being similar. Zebra began their career playing Moody Blues, Zepplin & Rush covers, which influenced their style.
This tune has elements from all 3, Zepplin intro+Mood blues+Rush influenced overall style=great band & great tune. What more does anyone can ask for?
I wished people would just shut up & enjoy the video which were hard to find few years ago. Now its easy & people are bored, so they have to bitch at each other's comment.
this tune has got to be 1 of the very best from the 80's PERIOD!!! you know i'm not afraid of who's behind the door!! look within, feel your spirit bond with the spirit of the 1 true god who is jesus christ!!! open up your door and let him in!! he only asks us to have faith in him and believe that he died for us all!! his blood is our salvation my friend! JESUS CHRIST RAINS FROM ON HIGH AND POURS OUT HIS BODY FOR THE FORGIVNESS OF SIN!!! give god a chance my friends you will not be ashamed!!! :)
sailed away lost from one another. Do YOU know that the vessel or the flesh. Is were you live. You are not the flesh. You are within. This is where Jesus told you to look. Within. Easy you say and you have already done this. Then you are awake right. Then who are YOU.? YOU dont know YOU thought YOU were what ever your vessels name is. YOU are not that vessel.? When a person dreams. Where is that vessel. NOT WITH YOU. Then you are not awake.
I really liked Triumph back in the day, too, and Zebra has a few good songs, but (and I write this with no disrepect to anyone), I'm sorry... bands like that WISH they were in the same CATEGORY as Rush. Rush is on an entirely different level. Just because other 3-piece bands use synths, "big words", and have a singer with a high-pitched voice does not make them Rush. You only need three things to make Rush: Alex Lifeson, Geddy Lee, and Neil Peart.
@SuperJohnnyO TOTALLY AGREE WELL SAID, THEY MAY KINDA SOUND A BIT SIMILAR, BUT THERE AINT NO COMPARRISON, ITS LIKE LIKE APPLES AND ORANGES, ROMO AND AIKMAIN, IT ISNT CLOSE
I was introduces to Zebra in 1987, riding in the backseat of a red Toyota Tercel with my girlfriend. The guy driving, I think his name was Vincent, had Zebra playing and I have been listening to these guys since then. Awesome. Don't ask me how I remember this shit.
growing up on long island NY, i cant tell you how many times ive seen these guys at local clubs back in the day.....good times, never forgotten...matter of fact i just seen Randy Jackson lthis summer at a local club...still doing it solo...
@csb9278 your fuckin crazy for even comparing zebra to rush they are at least all fuckin american and started amusic era as we know it today there are many three man bands such aszz top so give them credit where credit is do thank you
@1969Tdawg Zebra is right there - writing wise to Rush. Actually Rush writes songs about making love to cars and spaceships. I know Zebra were short in life. But Randy was crazy good. Rush (who I love and who I saw live) is a studio band to me. They amp up Neal Peart (who is amazing - don't get me wrong) to bring him out bigger. His drums on their albums r played up huge and they give him a drum set at their shows like the enterprise.
1982. I bought this album when I was 12. I bought it because I heard THIS song on the radio. I still have the LP. This is the first I have heard it in years. 29 years later, I still get goosebumps when I listen to it. "Here is the sound of thousands of screaming crickets..." I remember watching 'Cosmos' with my dad and all of the cool stuff Carl Sagan talked about. The imagination this song stirred was pretty incredible stuff. Seen 'Contact'?
@tw12a34nkl I was 12 then too, and I loved this song (and a few others by them). I remember this older dude, who was real hip to hip tunes, asking me to name off a few songs I liked; this was the first one I said and the look on his face was priceless, seems I blew him away. He was like oh yeah, good pick, little dude. Then he asked me if I knew what it was about; I had no clue and when he said it was about an alien encounter my jaw hit the floor. We are lucky to have been teens then.
@tw12a34nkl On a side note, same guy several years earlier told me, my brother, and some other guys about how he got laid recently. I guess I was 8 and he was maybe 12. Somebody asked him what the sperm looked like and he said it was like a blue ball of energy, shaped like a star and twirling around like an atom. And it slowly traveled from his member to the girl's vag (which was somehow a foot away), twirling and lit up. And it found its mark like a heat seeking missile.
@tw12a34nkl Don't know why I recalled that now but thought you might get a good laugh at the innocent idiocy of boastful children circa 1978. I actually believed him for a year or 2. We thought he was some kind of worldly wise man blessing us with his knowledge of women.
What a great tune... not reaching it's potential because of really poor production. Much of the demo sounds better than the record, though the demo had issues as well. Had this band had a really good producer it could have taken them to a much bigger audience.
HEY GUYS.....not only is this band still together, but they do have some more recent stuff. Its issues like the blackout of music in the US by sony and others that is the reason behind me starting a multi generational rock/metal band support effort 6 months ago. I call it the TOTALLY MUSIC ARTIST CHANNEL, and who was one of the first bands to become official supporters? ZEBRA. Randy Jackson is a class act. So is Mick Jones/FOREIGNER. They are supporters too. Its old & new school together.
i remember laying on the hood of my 67 camaro at the st. louis airport pva with my love, watching and more yet feeling the power of the jets landing right above us. stressing my speakers to their limit.
@borod5571 WOW I NEVER WOULD HAVE KNOWN THAT UNLESS YOU PUT THAT IN ALL CAPS. YOU'RE NOT AN ASSHOLE AT ALL. OR A RETARD! YOU'RE A VERY INTELLIGENT PERSON FOR POSTING IN ALL CAPS. THANK YOU VERY MUCH. I LOVE YOU. PLEASE LET ME SUCK YOUR DICK.
Randy Jackson is and was SO good. The guy has been playing Long Island bars with a tip cup the last 20 years - a shame. He should have led a major band. I don't know the whole story or why theyonly put out 5 studio albums in 30 years. No disrespect to Zebra but he was too good for them. See Rik Emmett of Triumph too. :)
Wild. Heard this song on the radio today for the first time (91.7 "The Drive" in Chicago, man do I love that station) while I was at work. When I heard the super high pitched vocals towards the end of the song I thought for sure it had to be Peter Gabriel, doing some wierd Genesis B-side but the DJ set me straight (shows how much *I* know). Dude, it's as if 70's-era Genesis, The Moody Blues, 80's-era Rush, and maybe Utopia were blended into a crazy amalgamation.
1985.....S.U.N.Y. Cobleskill, Cobleskill, NY. These guys played at my college. No Tellin' Lies was just out, and they rocked the Gym. There was a campus vote for either Jackson Browne or Zebra. Zebra won, and we were all amazed that they would come to our, at the time, 2 year State University of New York Jr. College. They played their asses off. Guy Gelso was playing with one hand, while poking his drum tech with the other stick. They were all such talented musicians. Great memory.
Awesome way underated band. Always jammed to ZEBRA. I forget where they were from. If any1 can shed some light on that it would be most appreciated. I have smoked quite a bit since my early tenns. What can I say I grew up in New Joisey....Thanks for the post, Also most appreciated. Keep On Rockin.....
@Stalota Thanx for the info, My silly ass thought they were from Brooklyn NY, So now that I admit I am burnt, Thanx again for the info. \m/ Keep on rockin'.
Me either dude! CRANK IT UP to eleven! Yes, I said 11. These amps go to eleven, why not just make 10 more powerful......well, these amps go to ELEVEN!!!! LOL.

@tw12a34nkl Don't know why I recalled that now but thought you might get a good laugh at the innocent idiocy of boastful children circa 1978. I actually believed him for a year or 2. We thought he was some kind of worldly wise man blessing us with his knowledge of women.

Oh yea... seen them a billion times in LI... mostly at the Mad Hatter in Stony Brook.... best place to see them.

I loved seeing these guys on Long Island in the 80's. Great band!
JasonKayDrums 5 months ago
What a great tune... not reaching it's potential because of really poor production. Much of the demo sounds better than the record, though the demo had issues as well. Had this band had a really good producer it could have taken them to a much bigger audience.
orlandofriend 5 months ago
HEY GUYS.....not only is this band still together, but they do have some more recent stuff. Its issues like the blackout of music in the US by sony and others that is the reason behind me starting a multi generational rock/metal band support effort 6 months ago. I call it the TOTALLY MUSIC ARTIST CHANNEL, and who was one of the first bands to become official supporters? ZEBRA. Randy Jackson is a class act. So is Mick Jones/FOREIGNER. They are supporters too. Its old & new school together.

@fishdoctorpost GREAT CHOICE OF BANDS ....I MET THIS BAND IN THE EARLY 80'S VERY NICE GUYS.....
skyfire62 7 months ago
1985.....S.U.N.Y. Cobleskill, Cobleskill, NY. These guys played at my college. No Tellin' Lies was just out, and they rocked the Gym. There was a campus vote for either Jackson Browne or Zebra. Zebra won, and we were all amazed that they would come to our, at the time, 2 year State University of New York Jr. College. They played their asses off. Guy Gelso was playing with one hand, while poking his drum tech with the other stick. They were all such talented musicians. Great memory.
