Back in the day guys would scrape machine beds in by hand that would take 2 men 6 months per machine to an accuracy of half a thousandth of and inch. Imagine that! and that was only in the 50's-60's

The point is to make it as flat a surface as possible . When he is done he will apply a dye on a perfectly flat ground plate and rub it on the work piece. When the plate is removed it will show all the high spots. which he will continue to scrape until the whole plate is evenly covered in dye indicating a flat surface.
