I'd really love to see more of these. How about on the Fortrss 2 & 3? I'm on the fence between Fortress 2 & Corsair 650D. The easy open side panels are a huge plus for the Corsair.
Does the superiority of positive air pressure mean that you're better off removing rear/top exhaust fans, just leave the holes for air to escape? Should some exhaust fans be turned into intake instead? In my case, intake: 2x120mm front, 140mm floor, 140mm side, exhaust: 1x120mm rear, 2x140mm top. Should I change anything?
It should be noted that the fog produced by fog machines in most cases (particularly the cheap units) is kinda sticky when it settles on something, which would result in "glueing" the dust to all kinds of weird places in the case...And since not having dust in the case is the main selling point of positive pressure cases, kids, don't try this at home ;)
Seriously... look at the air flow. The "positive" air pressure is very miniscule. Unless the case is made air tight the air just flows in then directly out. Also, unless the fans have dust filters capable of picking up the smallest particles dust will get in anyway. All this case is doing is compressing air and causing the molecules to heat up every time they bump into each other.
Wanna remove dust? Get a can of compressed air and clean it out once and a while.
can i jusy dump cold air in ther instead of that? be soo cool to see cold air flowing in there an have that side cover with a clear coat cover case an see cold air go in ay there an pc would of stay colder
I believe the other focus of this design is not to let the hot air from the GPU go up to the CPU since hot air goes up. And that in mind came the RVs and FT02.
POSITIVE air pressure to me would mean that there is more air being sucked into the case than is being exhausted therefore the case will always be somewhat pressurized. That definition makes a lot more sense to me and if you look up the meaning of positive air pressure that is exactly what you will find as an explanation. That means the pressure inside is higher than the pressure outside i.e.intake fans cause back pressure causing H.g. to rise THANK YOU! DO MORE STUDYING AND LESS PLAYING
that test dont prove shit -- that is not proof of positive air pressure - a stick of dynamite in the case is positive pressure- the only thing you prove is that the amount of air in is equal to the amount of air out!!!!!!
Yea and why is the air going out ? because there is a positive pressure inside the case. There is no fan to pull the air outside. A fan creates positive pressure where it is blowing air and negative pressure behind it.
In fact this video shows the reduced airflow effect perfectly. No smoke entering the system = no air entering the system = no cooling. Good work on designing the the world's first PC pressure cooker.
Positive pressure is a marketing scam, it still needs to draw in air to cool the system and that's going to draw in dust too. Filters help, but don't completely eliminate dust. And it's only going to be positive pressure while the system is running, when it's switched off there's no pressure. There's also plenty of holes/gaps in the back so the actual pressure differential is negligible. If anything this whole positive pressure system only servers to hinder airflow resulting in less cooling.
Hi. I need a really SILENT case for a DAW. I am not a gamer. I really like the FT02 and the FT01. What is the best for my needs? I think both cases are focused specially on cooling and i don't need much cooling. I'd like to have a fan controller in the FT01 and insulation panels in the RV02. The FT02 looks a bit too noisy. I don like the Antecs, i don't want to replace so much fans. Might be easy to install a fan controller in the FT01? Sorry, I am lost.
The Silverstone will launch a new version of the Fortress at Computex next? If so, I hope it is 100% aluminum. There are few cases on the market that are 100% aluminum. I hope to add the USB 3.0, air filters easily removable, screwless, opening for access to the processor and eSATA. Oh, and congratulations on FT01. Dimensions and construction are perfect.
High pressure air does not rise because it is its nature, it rises because most cases are designed with exhausts at the top. Where ever the exhaust are is where the high pressure or hot air will go. Whether that be at the bottom, top, or sides.
I never said anything about high pressure causing "air to rise" But rather this case's design is optimal because it follows a very simple physics principle where HOT air rises.
@soulcalibur22 You said "Fortress 2 is out already", So, i'm saying, regardless of whether or not a newer case is out, functionality doesn't change. If the case is good, it'll always be good. Regardless of it's age. All a choice of style in the end.
@Emeianoite so that comment was a response to something a year ago? why dont u read the rest of the comments vs just replying to top rated your off base. WTF are u talking ab no one is talking about style. dont waste my time with this shit
Someone mistakenly believe positive pressure cooling makes the ambient temperature COOLER. This is NOT TRUE. Negative Pressure Cooling yields a lower temperature but much more dust buildup. On the other hand, Positive Pressure Cooling yields a higher temperature but produces less dust.
Would you say having 1 intake fan at the front, 2 exhaust on the top and 1 exhaust at the back give good airflow? I'm looking for a case that has something like that
That would give the case an overall NEGATIVE pressure. This can reduce the internal temperature greatly but cause a lot of dust buildup. If I were you, I'd get this case xD. The airflow is amazing and as long as you have decent space in between GPU's (if you were going SLI), you'll be fine. This case has positive pressure but the temperature is low mainly because of it's design (heat rises). This case has 3 180mm intakes which pull in LOTS of air into the case and has only 1 120mm exhaust.
@andyp363 Hmm, yes - but the Obsidian has problems getting enough air through that sole intake. In HT01 my vga, and my psu (if I flip it over on its back) will help in pulling out the air. But your right, the top fan should work the other way...
silverstone fortress ft02 is a great case, as is the raven 2 . . . glad I've found these, since now I don't feel like I HAVE to go with the Thermaltake Level 10 for my next build.
Well, excellent design with black finish and large window for my cold catholide bright light to show my hardware and nice done with the cooling, this case will definelly make your hardware look like ice cubes :P
Wow, i was thinking of a case just like this the other day and was like, why haven't they made one of these! I was thinking tho of how they could make the computer more like a vacuum where the air has no where else to go but out and well here it is and it looks like it gets the job done. Fantastic! 5/5
Excellent demonstration. It would be nice to see more case manufacturers use this kind of "air flow demonstration" to solidify their claims as to how well their product moves air. This video definitely spiked my interest in the FT01.
@tsubodzuka I did a test like this using dry ice. It's a very amature video but get's the point across. It's in my channel and is for the HAF X case. Making a newer (and hopefully better) one soon with some case changes.
I got a question: What will be best for temperature inside the case? Positive or negative air pressure? I know that Positive will be better for the Gpu. Plz reply:) Considering buying this case:P
Jesus Christ guys, positive pressure design isn't about cooling, it's about keeping dust out of the goddamn case! All your discussion about negative vs positive "cooling" is a waste of time. Positive pressure makes sure all air moving INTO the case goes through FILTERS. Negative pressurized cases normally are a lot more dusty inside than positively pressurized ones.
Thanks, I'm building a PC at the moment and cooling is a concern. I will do more research into modifying my Antec 900 to accommodate a negative pressure effect.
I'm also researching how I would go about making A coaxial rotor system for the fans.
I didn't really see much difference, other that the smoke sat around a bit before leaving the big gaping hole.
I can see how positive pressure would be more efficient, as the denser air has a higher heat capacity and would be able to move more heat. The trick is to make the air come in slowly enough to become dense but exit fast enough not to hold the heat in. :)
Soulcalibur22's "B: air moves FASTER with posotive airflow." is irrelevant. An exhaust fan can only exhaust as much hot air as it's CFM of airflow which would be lower than say the more intake fans with a higher CFM. Therefore as I said earlier the air would stay much warmer because it's not being sucked out fast enough.
annnnnddd that in its self is irelevent cause i explaned how it work based upon.... how it works lol. u can always add faster fans. but the explanation never changes.
Positive air pressure only intakes more air and less dust. It also lets hot air move around the inside of the case longer. Negative air pressure is much more efficient at cooling and is only dustier because it sucks in air from all open cracks. Which means that negative pressure has a constantly cooler temperature because all the hot air is relieved much faster than is needed for the cool air to be blown in and move the hot air. It's already proven that Negative pressure cools better.
thats all relative. fan speed, amount of fans, ext also cold air in tghe case dosnt mean the machine can run any faster. after the case is at room temature theres not much more u can do without other alternative cooling. airs not gonna sudenly get colder past a cirtain point of room temurature. Also i think u underestmate how fast the air is moving even at low cf its not going to improove anything with loud blowing fans. the quality of heatsinks u have will move the air into the flow faster.
the positive vs negative pressure of the case is not relative in itself. negative pressure moves the air out faster. obviously the higher the cfm the more air is moved and so as a whole its cooler. negative is better as air is pulled trough the system as opposed to pushed around and through the system.
and its relative to A: the temp in your room which case temapure will truly never be under (even tho your mobo says so. B: To the fans and CF they have.
Enough arguing lol. I'm sure we all can agree that negative pressure causes LOTS of dust buildup but yields lower ambient temperature whereas positive pressure yields less dust buildup but has a lil' higher ambient temperature. Silverstone were smart to implement positive pressure in a case like this where hot air doesn't stay in the case for very long due to the cases design. even if you were to take the exhaust fan off, i'd still push hot air out the top (hot air rises).
In a forced air system the situation changes drastically. The airflow can be in any direction. You could turn your case upside down and see absolutely no difference in temps.
The net movement of heat will be to a place of lower pressure, usually the top of the case due to the exhaust fans
I have this case and its absolutely amazing :D! Positive air pressure is nice. Any vent or open gap exhausts air. I have had this case for a month or 2 and I have yet to actually clean dust out of the case itself, only the dust filters needed to be cleaned. That's in a dusty and dog hair filled room as well xD
The point of positive air pressure is it keeps dust out of the case. You filter the two intake fans and it is almost impossible for dust to get in.
Because there is a positive pressure in the case air is being clown out from every little gap, therefore dust can't get in through those gaps.
In a normal or negative air pressure case its possible for dust to get in through little unfiltered gaps and in the case of a negative pressure case the dust is being pulled in through those unfiltered gaps.
if air only moves out, then that creates a NEGATIVE air pressure inside the case. This negative pressure draws air in from the outside through all available gaps in the case.
wut he said. just make all the fans point in cept the one u want to exit. its like a toothpaste tube it can only go one way. its using air against its self with all the other fans creating presure then the place u want that presure to leave u make it blow outward. works so much better too.
Its just old thinking vs new like thick coper shims and a full pipe vs now, thin shims and holow pipes. smarter
Hahaha, oh wow. You give an explanation to how dust gets in with regular airflow, but when it comes to this negative stuff, you say "It just works". Don't try to answer people's questions if you know less than them.
my freind every fan is pointing in thats how air gets in... only one fan points out the exit fan. Reasons its better: A: Insted of one intake fan and 3 exit fans u have 3 intake fans and one exit fan MORE cold air. B: air moves FASTER with posotive airflow. C. as a result of B any dust that gets into the system CANT SETTLE as easily as other systems because it rides the posotive point of presure. (dosnt mean it all wont but WAY less will. I hope this helps
np u can even see in the test the air dosnt even get to sit on the bottom front of the case b2 the curent sucks it back up dust is thicker than air it wont even get to do that. itll just turn and exit imidiatly.
air have to come in and out of the case, if you have for example only exhaust fans the air will be sucked from out side the case but the problem is when the air is sucked from out side the air can come from every direction and to place dust filter in all the area that the air can be sucked in would be crazy. If you have all intake fan on your case we can easily predict from where the air will come in from thus placing a dust filter on the fan will ensure that very little dust get in.
The air actually being pulled in is from filtered gaps so dust accumulate onto the dust filters which can easily be cleaned. If you had negative pressure in the case, dust would accumulate from all sorts of gaps which would probably be unfiltered.
This is certainly neat. I was thinking about this because I have to replace all my fans in my desktop. I've always heard negative pressure was better...then again I do not have a SilverStone Case :( I have the Antec P182. I am not really quick to replace something so mundane as a case.
Positive Pressure is the way to go IF you have a case like this where "hot pockets" are non-existent. Take for example the fact that hot air rises. Even if you had no exhaust in this case, the hot air created would naturally rise out of the case through the PCI brackets, gaps, etc. For a long time negative pressure was the way to go. People could rectify the dust buildup with LOTS of dust filters EVERYWHERE. But now which a case like this, we can go positive pressure without any hot pockets.
Seriously im tossing!
Between silverstone raven or coolermaster haf??? Hmmm i know im not bein specific.. I use my right hand.

Which means that negative pressure has a constantly cooler temperature because all the hot air is relieved much faster than is needed for the cool air to be blown in and move the hot air. It's already proven that Negative pressure cools better.
MirokuKneda 2 years ago 2
thats all relative. fan speed, amount of fans, ext also cold air in tghe case dosnt mean the machine can run any faster. after the case is at room temature theres not much more u can do without other alternative cooling. airs not gonna sudenly get colder past a cirtain point of room temurature. Also i think u underestmate how fast the air is moving even at low cf its not going to improove anything with loud blowing fans. the quality of heatsinks u have will move the air into the flow faster.
soulcalibur22 2 years ago
slower moving low quality thinker shim (no heatpipe) sinks are what keep hot air in a case longer.
soulcalibur22 2 years ago
That's exactly why I bought a better heatsink that will move airflow direction towards the rear exhaust fan.
MirokuKneda 2 years ago
the positive vs negative pressure of the case is not relative in itself. negative pressure moves the air out faster. obviously the higher the cfm the more air is moved and so as a whole its cooler. negative is better as air is pulled trough the system as opposed to pushed around and through the system.
4VENG3R777 2 years ago
its not being pushed around thats the point. Its completely directed.
soulcalibur22 2 years ago
and its relative to A: the temp in your room which case temapure will truly never be under (even tho your mobo says so. B: To the fans and CF they have.
soulcalibur22 2 years ago
Enough arguing lol. I'm sure we all can agree that negative pressure causes LOTS of dust buildup but yields lower ambient temperature whereas positive pressure yields less dust buildup but has a lil' higher ambient temperature. Silverstone were smart to implement positive pressure in a case like this where hot air doesn't stay in the case for very long due to the cases design. even if you were to take the exhaust fan off, i'd still push hot air out the top (hot air rises).
EliteSoldier112 1 year ago
The statement "hot air rises" is inaccurate
In a forced air system the situation changes drastically. The airflow can be in any direction. You could turn your case upside down and see absolutely no difference in temps.
The net movement of heat will be to a place of lower pressure, usually the top of the case due to the exhaust fans

its just a comment stop replying to 2 year old comments lol. there is no arguing to stop.

I have this case and its absolutely amazing :D! Positive air pressure is nice. Any vent or open gap exhausts air. I have had this case for a month or 2 and I have yet to actually clean dust out of the case itself, only the dust filters needed to be cleaned. That's in a dusty and dog hair filled room as well xD
walmart023 3 years ago
The whole point is to keep as much dust out of the case as possible. And it does a good job.
Just got this case and it beats my old cooler-Master Cosmos-S by keeping my CPU cooler and it is quiet.
DeathCubeD 3 years ago
Negative pressure is better. Keeps air circulating. Negative pressure will suck in that smoke and blow it out.
tuksonrider 3 years ago
It would be nice to show a video with negative or normal air pressure case to compare.
koeiok 3 years ago
Don't see the point in this video to be honest.
Deathscapeuk 3 years ago
What exactly is the point of this video?
Isn't it obvious that the smoke goes thru the fan?
Do you really think that by wasting my time with your misleading titles about positive air pressure you will make me buy this case?
nutCaseBUTTERFLY 3 years ago
The point of positive air pressure is it keeps dust out of the case. You filter the two intake fans and it is almost impossible for dust to get in.
Because there is a positive pressure in the case air is being clown out from every little gap, therefore dust can't get in through those gaps.
In a normal or negative air pressure case its possible for dust to get in through little unfiltered gaps and in the case of a negative pressure case the dust is being pulled in through those unfiltered gaps.
Zaneus92 3 years ago
Except then when the computer is off, your positive pressure case will admit dust in through the exhaust. Unless you filter the exhaust too.
guspaz 3 years ago
There is no airflow what-so-ever when the case is off so unless your exhaust is on the top of the case, dust wont get in.
The whole point is to keep as much dust out of the case as possible. Not claiming to be 100% dust proof.
Zaneus92 3 years ago
If air is only moving out, where does it come in?
ponchato 3 years ago
if air only moves out, then that creates a NEGATIVE air pressure inside the case. This negative pressure draws air in from the outside through all available gaps in the case.
Zaneus92 3 years ago 4
wut he said. just make all the fans point in cept the one u want to exit. its like a toothpaste tube it can only go one way. its using air against its self with all the other fans creating presure then the place u want that presure to leave u make it blow outward. works so much better too.
Its just old thinking vs new like thick coper shims and a full pipe vs now, thin shims and holow pipes. smarter
soulcalibur22 3 years ago
I still don't see how this is any better than front/bottom->back/top.
ponchato 3 years ago
just for better dust management
cooling is pretty much the same
mcorpus01 3 years ago
I don't see how it helps with dust. It's still pulling in air from the outside, so how is it any different?
ponchato 3 years ago
on negative airflow, dust comes in from the drive bay and the PCI slots. on positive airflow, no dust gets in
mcorpus01 3 years ago
... Then how does air get in?
ponchato 3 years ago
u have too many stupid questions
mcorpus01 3 years ago 2
Hahaha, oh wow. You give an explanation to how dust gets in with regular airflow, but when it comes to this negative stuff, you say "It just works". Don't try to answer people's questions if you know less than them.
ponchato 3 years ago 3
duhh.. air gets in through the in-take fans..
are u smart?
mcorpus01 3 years ago 2
my freind every fan is pointing in thats how air gets in... only one fan points out the exit fan. I hope this helps
soulcalibur22 3 years ago
Thank you, that's what I was looking for, an explanation as to why it handles dust better.
ponchato 3 years ago 3
np u can even see in the test the air dosnt even get to sit on the bottom front of the case b2 the curent sucks it back up dust is thicker than air it wont even get to do that. itll just turn and exit imidiatly.
soulcalibur22 3 years ago
air have to come in and out of the case, if you have for example only exhaust fans the air will be sucked from out side the case but the problem is when the air is sucked from out side the air can come from every direction and to place dust filter in all the area that the air can be sucked in would be crazy. If you have all intake fan on your case we can easily predict from where the air will come in from thus placing a dust filter on the fan will ensure that very little dust get in.
VIVICK 3 years ago
The air actually being pulled in is from filtered gaps so dust accumulate onto the dust filters which can easily be cleaned. If you had negative pressure in the case, dust would accumulate from all sorts of gaps which would probably be unfiltered.
EliteSoldier112 1 year ago
This is certainly neat. I was thinking about this because I have to replace all my fans in my desktop. I've always heard negative pressure was better...then again I do not have a SilverStone Case :( I have the Antec P182. I am not really quick to replace something so mundane as a case.
Trix2248 3 years ago
It doesn't matter if you have a SilverStone case or not. Positive pressure has always been better, regardless of your case.
jonnyGURU 3 years ago
I've always heard opposite, and googling the question, it seems as if no one really knows which is better, or if it matters.
Positive pressure has the advantage that dust will not enter the case, it will be trapped by the filters. Negative pressure prevents hot pockets...
That is just what I read, what are you thoughts on it?
Trix2248 3 years ago
Positive Pressure is the way to go IF you have a case like this where "hot pockets" are non-existent. Take for example the fact that hot air rises. Even if you had no exhaust in this case, the hot air created would naturally rise out of the case through the PCI brackets, gaps, etc. For a long time negative pressure was the way to go. People could rectify the dust buildup with LOTS of dust filters EVERYWHERE. But now which a case like this, we can go positive pressure without any hot pockets.
