Though Iv'e heard this song a bazillion times, it is not until now that I realized Music For Boys is a butchered version of Funky town. Best song to ever emerge from the 80's!
Bruce, Beej - Hope you will both be at First Ave. on the 13th! We lost Les Paul, Bruce, and Beej - you need to carry on the funk! Bruce will be there in spirit, will you be there Beej?
Saw them early 80's at a church on Lawrence University campus in Appleton, Wisc. on acid. Needless to say it was the one and only time a band played in that church.
They toured a little. Posted on another video that I saw them in a little community center in Salt Lake City! Awesome! And I was more into hardcore punk at the time. Played with a great slc ska-rock band called 004.
Dancing to this music at the Odyssey in West Hollywood, an 18+ club where everyone was 15-21, dancing with boys to music for boys...count me as another KROQ devotee...until I got my fake id and started going to Studio One!
vonkaltenborn: I was living in Rochester, MN when I first heard the Suburbs on KRPR 89.9(community) college radio. From 1983-1986 I probably saw them in and around Rochester 6 times. They were the best live band I've ever seen!
BTW, "Music fo Boys" was used as a theme song on a recurring segment on PBS show "Newton's Apple" for awhile. newtonsapple[dot]tv
The Suburbs would bomb on down to Madison, Wisconsin 3 or 4 times per year in the early to mid-1980's. I was always in attendance, and they were consistently amazing.
I saw The Suburbs at "GS Vigs," a fledgling nightclub owned by Butch Vig of Garbage fame. That night they invited "that guy from Husker Du" to come onstage and flip-out. Then he did a stage dive, and ran out the front door.
The only chance I got to see these guys live the started 3 hours late and I had to get back for my curfew since I was in 10th grade. Good to see them now. I love that logo iiiii
Also, WNYU (New York Univ.) and WFDU (Fairleigh Dickinson College) would play the Suburbs, plus most of the other Twin Cities artists. The "This Is Pop" show on WNYU was one of the best 80's college radio shows going for a few years.
Super fantastic! Like the faster tempo than the record version! They are so tight! And such great video quality! Fantastic... too bad only people from the Twin Cities and KROQ listeners seem to know about the Suburbs.
This is AWESOME. Thanks so much for posting this... you MUST keep this out here. The last time I searched for these videos, someone had deleted them. Thanks!!
Yes. Listen to the break in the middle of the song when they pause.
I refer you to the breakdown at 2:24. The bassline is clearly funkytown.

NJ fan here. I discovered the Suburbs, the Replacements, Husker Du, etc. as a kid in the 80's from local college radio.

Yes, The Suburbs were and "are" the greatest Minneapolis band, ever.
Chan, Beej, Bruce, Michael & Hugo set a stage that 5 others could never duplicate.
Thanks Suburbs, Hope to see Beej and all again!
