@12taylorswiftrocks You can play both, but may have more opportunities to play choosing viola. Don't know how old you are or your size, but viola is much more demanding physically because of its larger size. I am a violist who also plays violin. :) Go for it!!!!
@Wavewolfaroha I'm a violist that also plays the violin, but I think that the double bass is more demanding! It hurts my left shoulder for the way you must hold it.
@ClassicalHearts1 Check with your teacher...I am guessing that there is tension in your shoulder causing the pain when you play the bass, or stress against the skeletal muscular
structures. Maybe you are playing too tall an instrument?
BEAUTIFUL!!! (:-o) Now, where is the rest of this piece? I hope you will post it, for as you do, I will mark them as favorites on my channel! Great work here, both of you.
To Violabrain... Sonatas ARE chamber music. Brahms wrote this for piano and clarinet (with the transcription for viola by brahms himself) just so you know. There's a really huge difference between SONATA and CONCERTO.
@DanDelGesu When I hear the term _instrument_ sonata, I typically think of a piece in which one instrument has a dominant part over the other. However, when I hear the term _instrument_ and piano sonata. It associates as equally balanced parts/roles (chamber music) in my mind. That's thedistinction I was making by using "chamber music" and "viola sonata" I am well aware of the role Brahms op.120 (I like 2 more than 1) in viola repertoire.
Interesting balance. it sounds like chamber music rather than a viola sonata. What I ended up focusing on was the variation of vibrato. It really adds color to the piece and makes it sound like autumn...which is what I usually associate with what this piece "sounds" like.
@violabrain Frankly, this is essentially a trio - piano, piano, and viola. The viola is not a solo instrument by any stretch, but rather an equal partner in this three-part ensemble (of which two parts happen to belong to one player).
@violabrain Ok I would like to know are you saying that sonatas are not considered chamber music? From what you stated, " It sounds like chamber music rather than a viola sonata" (violabrain, 10 months ago) May you please explain what you mean by this quote?
@nimrod793 i am a young viola student.. & i am useing this piece for my listening sheet for the Orchestra in my school. me & my dad enjoy listening 2 it.
It seems like it's rare when one hears both perfect intonation and fabulous balance between the instruments in performances of this sonata...to say nothing of well-shaped phrases or authentic expressiveness. Bravo to the performers--a spectacular reading!
You can't imagine more insightful style and phrasing for this piece, and never the slightest hint of showing off or "Oh, this is so easy, aren't I clever." Unlike some "slapstick comedian" violists I could mention.
Beautiful! This version has to be one of the best interpretations of this piece I've heard. It almost sounds identical to Yuri Bashmet! Sir, you are truly a Master Violist!
my god, that beard is magnificent.

i have to agree with the person who likened murrath's playing to bashmet's. so rich and so feeling. beautiful, human.
