  • my god, that beard is magnificent.

oh and the music is nice too

  • precioso

  • yay! VIOLA! ;)

  • OK i need some help. I cant decide to play violin or viola. I love them both. Please help.

  • @12taylorswiftrocks You can play both, but may have more opportunities to play choosing viola. Don't know how old you are or your size, but viola is much more demanding physically because of its larger size. I am a violist who also plays violin. :) Go for it!!!!

  • @Wavewolfaroha I'm a violist that also plays the violin, but I think that the double bass is more demanding! It hurts my left shoulder for the way you must hold it.

  • @ClassicalHearts1 Check with your teacher...I am guessing that there is tension in your shoulder causing the pain when you play the bass, or stress against the skeletal muscular

structures. Maybe you are playing too tall an instrument?

  • @12taylorswiftrocks viola of COURSE.

  • @shidonisama OOOOOOOOOOOOOH YEA!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • This is very beautiful, and a lovely interpretation, but its nothing like Bashmet's playing...sorry.

  • god save the viola

  • As pianist I have played and loved this sonata for most of my life. This performance warms my heart.

  • i have to agree with the person who likened murrath's playing to bashmet's. so rich and so feeling. beautiful, human.

  • such an awesome sound

  • epic, makes me proud to be a viola player :)

  • epic, makes me proud to be a viola player :)

  • Hey is'nt this pice written for clarinet??

  • @someone2871 lol, yes

  • Sigh...this makes it easy to remember why we play viola.

  • who would dislike this, i might like rock but this is awesome.!

  • BEAUTIFUL!!! (:-o) Now, where is the rest of this piece? I hope you will post it, for as you do, I will mark them as favorites on my channel! Great work here, both of you.

  • Very nice

  • truly magnificent. i absolutely love the viola ^^ thumbs up everyone ^^

  • I love this sonata! nice interpretation

  • this is truly wonderful.. i love the violia a lot! i even pay it too!!1

  • es hermosa.. en que tonalidad esta? la voy a buscar

  • so cool

    great legato, great vibrato

    and very musical

love that you play the high octave @ 0:49 ( as the clarinet) my teacher Nobuko Imai played like this also.

I think one of the best vila sounds I heard

  • To Violabrain... Sonatas ARE chamber music. Brahms wrote this for piano and clarinet (with the transcription for viola by brahms himself) just so you know. There's a really huge difference between SONATA and CONCERTO.

  • @DanDelGesu When I hear the term _instrument_ sonata, I typically think of a piece in which one instrument has a dominant part over the other. However, when I hear the term _instrument_ and piano sonata. It associates as equally balanced parts/roles (chamber music) in my mind. That's thedistinction I was making by using "chamber music" and "viola sonata" I am well aware of the role Brahms op.120 (I like 2 more than 1) in viola repertoire.

  • Interesting balance. it sounds like chamber music rather than a viola sonata. What I ended up focusing on was the variation of vibrato. It really adds color to the piece and makes it sound like autumn...which is what I usually associate with what this piece "sounds" like.

  • @violabrain Frankly, this is essentially a trio - piano, piano, and viola. The viola is not a solo instrument by any stretch, but rather an equal partner in this three-part ensemble (of which two parts happen to belong to one player).

  • Thanks for putting up this piece, its a good reference for us young viola students

  • @nimrod793 i am a young viola student.. & i am useing this piece for my listening sheet for the Orchestra in my school. me & my dad enjoy listening 2 it.

  • your opinion is wrong.

  • Yo amo la Viola (L)

  • truly my favorite interpretation of this piece. i'm playing this in a week. thank you for inspiring me.

  • Awesome!!

  • It seems like it's rare when one hears both perfect intonation and fabulous balance between the instruments in performances of this sonata...to say nothing of well-shaped phrases or authentic expressiveness. Bravo to the performers--a spectacular reading!

  • You can't imagine more insightful style and phrasing for this piece, and never the slightest hint of showing off or "Oh, this is so easy, aren't I clever." Unlike some "slapstick comedian" violists I could mention.

  • Outstanding Mr. Murrath!

  • im truly jealous after listening to this lol. amazing

  • Beautiful! This version has to be one of the best interpretations of this piece I've heard. It almost sounds identical to Yuri Bashmet! Sir, you are truly a Master Violist!

  • better than bashmet!

  • definitely better than Bashmet, i think probably every interpretation is better than bashmets.

  • @joshviolinviola May you explain your arguement ? I don't disagree nor am I saying I agree.

  • @mjwynne01 Funny, I rather think is sounds almost as good as Ori Kam! ... pretty uncanny ..

  • @mjwynne01 You are very right, but a volia is the instrument. Easy mastack#D

  • @mjwynne01 O my im so sorry! i thought it ment violin player, not viola. I even Play the viola! Sorry:p
