@growingup15 the train is racing a jet in the video, this one who is filming for the tv show, that's why ! high speed trians in USA ? i hope for you too ! :)
Some friends show me some sceptics on FOX news,"we don't need this kind of transportation, we love our cars".Damned!!TGV in France doesn't kill car. There are less cars on roads so the probalities to have a crash are less too!In France too welove our car!Say no for bullet trains is a nonsense.Marocco say yes,Russia say yes,China,South Korea, even Brits with Eurostar but some Americans said like "it's a waste of money".I...I can't believe it...Look at this vid AND WAKE UP.
@MrNathari train cost damn much money, but its a very good start for the environment and it will be damn nice to have them in usa and canada, both big countrys, they need the trains. and its better to have trains. so you can bring stuff faster on the roads. much faster
I don't understand Spanish very well but Maglev and Shinkansen aren't the same things :].
Shinkansen= bullet train in Japan, on rail.
Maglev= "train" with Magnetic Levitation with just one commercial way (city-airport) in Shangai (but it's a japanese system). The profitability or the feasibility in long distance isn't very known for the futur but yeah it have the record of 581km/h.
No sure that makes sense, but I heard that the Japanese Shinkansen can have most of its tracks above the ground because all cars are motorized, splitting the weight all over the cars, and therefore avoiding the need of a very heavy tractor that would put too much stress on elevated tracks...
It costs a lot of money to build a train track above the ground but the benefit is that there is no need for railroad crossings, you don't have to take the land away from the farmers, and it's soundproof.
In the city, under the train tracks, they build restaurants and stores.
It's kinda cool to have dinner and and to feel a small earthquake every 1/2 hour (the train passing at high speed above)
peppeddu, Don't be surprised, just check basic facts. If you look closer, you'll see the 4metre high fence 10metres back from the track; you would also discover there are no level crossing at all on high speed lines in the TGV network.
Quite impressive. But for commercial purposes useless. If trains are going faster than 300 km/h they just need too much energy, so it gets too expensive. Only the German Transrapid or the Japanese Maglev, which uses a magnetic levitation system, could go something like 500 km/h and be still energy-efficient.
The French just did break the record for marketing purposes...
For commercial purposes speed is anything but useless. People pay for speed -simple. Not just an extra 50mph over the standard train on that route either - a serious speed jump on regular services such as the TGV pays dividens in sales. Hats off to the French - they wipe the floor with UK railways nowadays ( with a little help from some British engineers I know! ). Impressive regardless.
You kidding ?! the Maglev swallow ever more energy than any high speed trains French or not !
I agree that's we need to progress whit technology consumtion, at 320 kmh constraint on the track are great, and the TGV eat a lot of electricty, but don't forget that's we beat the airplane on fews destination in the country, that was beating the speed record like this or running at 300 kmh is important, peoples trust in high speed trains here !
NO our trains here are crap. I was just in france so i'm going to post some europe vs australia in the train department footage. You'll laugh. I'll let you know.
behind the Acela there is also the French society Alstom (first society in the world in this domain which builds the french TGV and all its versions in Europe and in the world) in collaboration with the "canadian" Bombardier
Don't forget that all the high-speed trains ON RAILS in Europe are the children or the cousins of the french TGV and just versions of the TGV manufactured by Alstom for the "tastes" of each European countries
Thus, it's normal that Acela have the appearance of the TGV
ah ! ok, there more than two type of TGV, there in order of built: -TGV PSE (ex orange paint) : max speed : 300kmh/186mph -TGV atlantique : 300kmh/186mph -TGV reseaux, duplex, POS and DASYE, max speed 320kmh/200mph.
hay, i'm from poland. i'm driving in train with's speed 200 km/h but with that speed i never seen in a train, maybe in a aircrtaft, my uncle is pilot, but no in train. it's amazing

Nope, Britain has the worst rail network in the europe, the rails are old, the investment is not even present thanks to privatisation and the trains that are designed to hit 145 - 160 mph are kept at 80-90 at the most to stop accidents, the system in this here UK is a joke, i'm british and embarresed by it.
Amazing, truly amazing. What started in 1931 with a fleet of 10 EMU's of streamlined design, tested at 100 MPH, built in Philadelphia, PA, USA, has culminated to THIS.
Nope. They operated off of electric third rail, tested at speeds over 100 MPH. They were the first railroad equipment ever tested in a wind tunnel. They were built in 1931, retired in 1991.
Erm - no, the USA had no history culminating in this. Europe had already taken electric trains to that speed 30 years earlier. It seems the USA has always been behind europe on this one.
ilman001 No railway company in the world is seriously considering putting trains that travel at such high speeds into regular passenger service. the maglev in shanghai runs every day at 433 kph not the same design , but it is fast
It was just an expensive public stunt paid by Alstom, SNCF and RFF. No railway company in the world is seriously considering putting trains that travel at such high speeds into regular passenger service. The electricity required to operate the train strained the rail line's power grid almost to the breaking point. The overhead electrical lines and a large part of the train's propulsion system can for all intents and purposes be junked after such trip.
Ilman, get your facts right before posting such nonsence. Of course no railway company intends to operate trains running at such a high speed, but your statement that "The overhead electrical lines and a large part of the train's propulsion system can for all intents and purposes be junked after such trip" is total bullshit. This very TGV trainset has been running at speeds over 500km/h many times over the past few weeks.
First of all, I read that off the internet. second of all it was intended to test new AGV (Automotrice Grande Vitesse) technology. Also, there is a new LGV (ligne Grande Vitesse) going between France and Germany via Strasbourg (France) that was also being tested. TGVs recycle 25% of the energy they use so there is no problem. They won't do this all the time anyway. They were testing new technology not doing a publicity stunt.
TGV have to be safe up to 200km/h above the intended commcercial speed. SNCF always test new high-speed lines they did it for the 1990 record attempt. The train isn't going to be scrapped, after the 1990 record the train was returned into normal service and a banner and plaque was put on the train to commemerate the attempt.
Not the whole train but the train's propulsion system has been replaced after the record attempt. If you think the SNCF can afford to buy a new propulsion system after every journey you're wrong. They can't. That's why this whole thing was a one-off and not an every day occurance.
Wow! I really like this video dashloc! Did you hear about California and tgv? They want to build a bullet train with French technology between SF and LA!

Very dangerous, I am surprised there haven't been any accident yet.
In Japan the Shinkansen (the high speed train) is running 60 feet above the ground inside inaccessible tracks.
Here an animal (or even a human) can cross path and cause a real mess.
peppeddu 2 years ago
Normal, In Japan a lot of track are built whit anti seismic construction.
Yes, unfortunely whit got the same problems whit animals and sometimes humans, a boar hitting at high speed make a lot of damages on the TGV !
dashloc 2 years ago
It costs a lot of money to build a train track above the ground but the benefit is that there is no need for railroad crossings, you don't have to take the land away from the farmers, and it's soundproof.

Not europe only france, 30years ago, for the germans it was 20years ago.

ilman001 No railway company in the world is seriously considering putting trains that travel at such high speeds into regular passenger service. the maglev in shanghai runs every day at 433 kph not the same design , but it is fast

Uh-oh! I sense fast train envy. Some people just hate to see rail succeed.

Fast train envy from Japan? I don't think so. If you count a one-off record for success that's fair enough. Because I don't.

TGV have to be safe up to 200km/h above the intended commcercial speed. SNCF always test new high-speed lines they did it for the 1990 record attempt. The train isn't going to be scrapped, after the 1990 record the train was returned into normal service and a banner and plaque was put on the train to commemerate the attempt.
jonzofon 4 years ago
Not the whole train but the train's propulsion system has been replaced after the record attempt. If you think the SNCF can afford to buy a new propulsion system after every journey you're wrong. They can't. That's why this whole thing was a one-off and not an every day occurance.

i suppose your right, the propolsion system is probably too powerful for commercial service.
