This is a great video! I'm a non-Punjabi myself who spent a significant amount of time in Punjab, and it's funny how I realized I'd assimilated a lot of these actions without even realizing it. People back home found it quite funny when I returned and had to re-adjust!
@ihaveacomputer Thanks for the comment! While I don't think that Punjabis necessarily have more body language than any other cultural group, I think they might use non-verbal signs more for communicating, as opposed to Anglophone culture. At least my experience has been that it's the "native" thing to do a lot of gestures in place of talking.
Lol omg it brought me back.... totaly saw my grandpa doing most of those... specialy the the angry one haha Tapar mar doonga hahah... as for what one guy was saying bout the toilet one... i for one know many many people that do that so it is legit and also the daroo one as well... maybe those who are saying it is wrong are from south india hah but any ways thanks for the memories brother!
"Thappi" is also more towards the inner thigh. Lol I love Bahut Naraz LOL!! hah the dances are funny. LOL I LOVE THE TRANSLATION :"SONS OF FARMERS MAKE GOAT CALLS" lol that is the funniest thing I've ever heard!! lol "Jatt bakree baloundey" lol - ah man the Daroo one is very wrong, no one ever does that, that would get you killed lol..the correct gesture is like as if your are holding a glass and you tilt it towards your mouth. very funny clip!!
...also the 'toilet' one is more of a very rate joke rather than usual body language. And I've never seen the 'nah nah' thumb thing. The "going" gesture is also a bit wrong, the finger wont circle like that, but pointing upwards is correct, but you would also have a head tilt with that :) lol that "vah" one is very wrong, that is like how beggers ask for change. for the Vah gesture, you need ur hand as if you are screwing a light bult with a smile and head tilt :) "I'm talkin to you" is wrongTOO
lol this is funny, but its true...except the "TEA" thing...the gesture you mentioned means "a little bit" i.e. "thora jiha" - people usually say that as in "have a little tea"...and if you say " no no, I'm ok", they may do the gesture which you show and say "comeonnn...thori jahi pee la" i.e. (drink a little bit, cmon).
Also, the "Yes, OK. Very good sir" gesture is a bit non-punjabi. We dont shake our head like that but we may tilt it 'once' (a bit more exaggerated tilt than what you show
i have to add to my first comment----- some time ago he explained to me that the body language for "female" is putting thumb+forefinger up to nose ---- like insinuating nosering [laung] .maybe thats just karachi? sindh? : )
luved this!!! my pakistani hon [ born+raised in karachi] does allot of those too. and i just smile ! my favorites u + he does is that clicking mouth sound with head turn....and especially --lollll-- that way he counts on his fingers !! i always wondered about that. tho when he bodylanguages "dance" ,he always does the arms+hands twisting [ y'know like "mehboob meri" or ashwarias bellydance arms movemnts] : )
Kundiyan Muchha, Bahut Naraz, Putt Jattan De Balonday Bhakrey...
LOL! Well done my friend. How much time did you spend in India? You certainly picked up a lot...probably got yourself into some hairy situations based on what you know.
"No" is the open hand (not the thumb thing -- that one is more teasing like "you lose.) I can see what you mean; this one just seem more "distinctive" to me (more distinctive from ex. Anglo culture). Directions in Punjabi...yeah well I just look for the general direction, then when I come to the next turn, ask someone else, and so on. It's the only way! ok, thanks!
Cool, yeah I was only able to visit Chhapar once actually (at the mela)...and unfortunately I got lost trying to get there and missed a lot!! I road a my scooter from Chandigarh to there...so confusing...and so many holes in the road, ha ha. Even funnier was driving back to Chandigarh that night!!!!!
omg u ride a scooter from chandigarh to chhapar -_- i woulda seriously advised against that cuz there are a lot of holes and scooters break down and its a pain in da neck when that happens, my cousins live in chandigarh but i always took the bus there cuz i think its just easier. how was it funnier driving back? is it cuz u didnt see where u were going ?
Hi, i'm glad you found my vid and enjoyed it. I have lived in Punjab for extended periods, so that is how I know. please forgive me if I've made any mistakes
thanks. I LIVED in Punjab (4-5 times) while doing research on Punjabi music, culture, and language. I LOVED because it is a cool place with cool people :)
Hilarious! You should do some mime work. I especially liked the 'I'm willing to accept..' bit.
You have been very observant and this is good alongside your other travelogues which take a more serious look. I would love to see some from other countries you have visited. Especially Britain though I think everything would look like, 'I'm willing to accept..'

@whalesoundervish You are exactly right! Unfortunately, I don't wear chappals so I didn't have one with me, ha ha.

@hultonclint So I'm assuming you spent some time in India or Pakistan Punjab, correct? If not you're channeling spirits straight from the pind.

@whalesoundervish Yes to all of them.

Your observation is amazing. A few comments..
1. I think 'saying no' is done with the index finger rather than thumb -(this maybe regional) but youre right, the hand must be near waist level !
2. Going to toilet with the little finger raised means you're going for a pee , a second finger raised means more serious work is at hand.
3.Have you ever got directions from a punjabi ? They raise thier hand vaguely between the sun and the earth, no matter where you are !
croyde001 2 years ago
Thanks, I didnt know bout the second finger :)
