  • Just tasti9ng this for the 1st time today the 1st thing that came to my mind was dirty bandaid, lol, but yeah, this is my 1st experience with a heavy peated whiskey...

  • I feel the same way about the ardbeg, while still a very good scotch I would prefer a laphroaig which is cheaper anyways.

  • Love your reviews very much. I also favour the Laphroig, but Ardbeg is almost just as good and very good whisky indeed. A great dram.

  • I have Laphroaig quarter cast and this one. Ardbeg is my fav along with a block of dark chocolate with roasted almonds

  • Islay Scotches just remind me of sitting around a wood stove during a snowstorm...

    Amazing.

  • I notice you say its a hot day, for me the whole smoke/peat thing deifnitely goes more with wet/cold weather.

  • @chrish12345 agree, 'cause i dont put ice in my single malt and i enjoy it more in cold weather but try this: when you're grilling a nice beef steak or ribs on an open fire on a hot summer day, drink some good "blended" (yes blended) scotch on the rocks (yes, call me crazy) before the meat is ready then uncork a nice bottle of left bank bordeaux and have a glass and you'll see!..perfect sunday afternoon..ahhh!

  • Ardbeg is like drinking charcoal mud. Nice shit.

  • Ardbeg is like drinking charcoal mud. Nice shit.

  • ardbeg (blasda )mmmmmmmmmmm or ardbeg uigdaeile mmmmmmmmmmmmmmm

  • I can see he still isn't convinced by this... I used to like these smoky ones but now prefer Speysides, which let the whisky speak for itself.

  • Hey, thank you for the videos. Have you tried Smokehead from Ian McLeod? I find it's very similar to this. Maybe it's done at Ardbeg?

  • I am completely new at this also, but I totally agree about that medicinal effect on the nose and late in the finish, very late. This is why my ardbeg 10 gets left for guests.

    Great review, well done.

  • hey Tom,

I'm no pro either and haven't quite got the 'tastes' down yet. But I too am a 'peatluvr' and while Ardbeg 10 is quite an entry-level Islay it is a very good scotch. If you get a chance try their Uigeadail and Airigh Nam Beist offerings as, I believe, they give Lagavulin a run for its money...

  • I bought one today and enjoying it. Laphroaig and Ardbeg the best scotch around: the smell of the sea is one you can't beat.

  • Hi Tom,

try the new Ten. This is more medicine, more peat, very powerful. A touch of lemon, touch of ananas, all in all very balanced between smoke and fruity sweetness. yummie :-)

    Greetings from germany!

    Slainte,

    Christian

  • love your reviews mate. love islays too. You have tasted some of the best malts. Keep tasting. Try the highland park 12 probably the best 12 out there. Enjoy.

  • how would u compare Jura single malt with ardbeg or any other islay scotches, since they're so close geographicaly, i guess there must be some similarities on flavor and aromas, do they use peat to malt the barley? too? i've never had the chance to taste it yet

  • Hi javierhejtmanek,

normally Jura malt isnt peated. Try the Jura Superstition. It is medium peated and a very pleasant malt.

  • thanks for your advise, i'm gonna try to find it this week (i hope i won't cost me a fortune hahaha!) happy 2009 for you mate

  • @javierhejtmanek I tried the Jura Superstition. Even they say it is 'smoky' on the label it comes nowhere near the peat/smoke you get from Islay whiskys. It is dominated by a rich woody sweetness with walnuts and fresh citrus.

  • @chrish12345 i've tried the Jura 10 and 16 yrs but never the superstition special edition but i've heard it's a big boy big guns!, but the 10 and 16 definetly not very peaty, a little flowery or i must say honey finish like bowmore 12, not my thing thou, jura island is very near islay but very different character and i like they keep their own personalities (like england, ireland and scotland being so close and yet so different) long live scotch!

  • What websites do you use to help evaluate your standards for Scotch, and have you ever tried adding water to your Scotch?

  • Keep up the good work. I was lucky enough to visit Scotland last summer and I am a Scotch novice but of all the bottles of Scotch I drank while I was there Ardbeg 10 was the most complex and impressive.

  • is really light, like agua almost hihi

hey friend litle more north tasting in the future, like example highland park, TALISKER 18 ~ 45.80% Island (non Islay) really cool hihihihi
