the snobby arsty fartsy hipsters were totally up in arms over this commercial. They were flipping their finely knitten lids because their precious hipster God was going commercial. I'll bet their thick Elvis Costello style glasses were getting steamed up just thinking about it. Too bad AT&T didn't take things further and mock these spoiled, preppy, posers by playing their beloved Tom Waits, Jeff Buckley or Elliot Smith in their next commercial. They'd hang themselves with their silk scarves.
If anyone likes this ad or got introduced to Nick Drake to it, though, that's great. But I hate how people are insulting the music because of this ad, and I don't like the way the song's been edited.
This is barely a snippet of the actual song. People should go listen to the WHOLE song "From the Morning" by Nick Drake, better yet all his albums, including this album ("Pink Moon") instead of insulting a musical legend who LITERALLY had more talent in a finger than everyone who insults him combined.
Volkswagen did justice to his legacy when they used the "Pink Moon" song in an ad, but the way AT&T cut this up and is overplaying it-it just isn't the same at all. Seems to be making things worse
I dont give a fuck what anyone says. Nick Drake has an amazing voice and amazing guitar ability. So fuck these haters. Shitty commercial. Amazing song.
So they "ripped off" Christo & Jean Claude. Waaaa!! Who cares?? I'm sure that "97%" of the people who have seen this commercial don't even know who they are. If you looked closely you will find almost every movie, song, story, ect. used material that had been done before. If you want everything to be completely original, to bad, you were born several centuries late.
Greysmoke12.... Are you talking about the black gentleman looking up? My counter says about 0:09 - 0:11. That's cool. I just saw a show about rating which movies make us happy. They had Ferris Bueller's on it. The said the construction workers were just in the area while they filmed the parade shot. They saw them dancing, liked it, shot and kept it. Kind of like your friend.
Christo and Jean Claude should sue them. The commercial is really cool, but I immediately thought of them, when there is that disclaimer at the end. Still, it is a rip-off of their art.
The 97% is referring to their service area. They have a wide area of coverage, but they're counting ALL areas, not just the good ones. You know what I mean, the ones where you have one bar.
There's no way in hell they have 97% of Americans as customers. :D
i hope they know that verizon wireless is the largest cellphone provider in the country so how can they cover 97% wen they only cover 90 million out of 303 million americans
i wish it was POSSIBLE for me to be on the internet for more than 15 mins with my connection dropping. or watch tv for a half hour without the picture freezing and the sound cutting. or make a phone call without the signal dropping. i wish they gave a damn about the customer and fixed the problem, is that possible? Nice job corporate whoring a Nick Drake song, who's next Nirvana? fuck you AT&T, you fraternity of cocksuckers. my service only works half the time, i should only pay half the price
Neat ad. May have taken inspiration from Christo and Jean-Claude, but you can't very well trademark draping fabric over something. I do that to my kitchen table all the time.
I like that nick's song is in a commercial but I would have rather it had the full lyric instead of outing some of it... however, at least his music is being heard. <3
@ana1sninja Ah, I know that now; my only point was that advertisers are wrong in thinking that people will want/care for their product; they'll only like the Nick Drake song and effect it has on them, IMO.
fuck you att for using Nick Drake's song. He was not motivated by the desire for mass corporate appeal. He only wanted to touch people personally with his music and he would vomit if he knew you were using his music for corporate gain.
PS - you are still culpable for colluding with the bush administration to illegally wiretap US citizens and I am still boycotting your ass.
@ana1sninja don't they have to notify him, and or, ask his permission to use his song for their commercial. So he would know...and or, gave them permission...maybe i'm wrong. But...maybe i'm not.
@RandomlyChandler oh, wow, interesting, so whoever is in charge of the collection of music had to give them permission, kind of like what's going on now with picasso's collection. or michael jacksons....
@ana1sninja im pretty sure,... he wouldn't enjoy this but whats wrong with all of us having a piece of his music? absolutely nothing. i understand he might not have wanted this... but I'm also sure he wouldn't mind having people enjoy his music because thats probably why he began singing in the first place.
Ripping off the work of Christo and Jean Claude (who had just died) is the main selling tool here. AT&T would have to pay for the use of the song, but blatantly steals the work of these world renowned visual artists free and clear. AT&T is making money by ripping them off and getting away with it.
Did anyone else think that this song was by Alexi Murdoch? LOL! I felt so silly when I found out that it was infact Nick Drake! But, in my defense I guess the comparison has been made a lot with Alexi and Nick. This just shows my age in the opposite way...how young I am! ;)

@wladdaimpala88 I wouldn't say that, That's what music is for, for it to spread. Many didn't know Nick Drake in his Time, and most of his music was forgotten until the later years.
This is the most annoying commercial on TV, I'm sick of seeing the orange blankets covering random famous monuments, I don't care if it's real or fake I also want that singer to shut up,
I used to have Verizon never had problems with drop calls. I moved to Dallas and was switched to AT&T due to a job and have daily dropped calls. AT&T please stop lying, your own customers know the truth. 97% thats a joke just go to Kansas, Nebraska, South and North Dakota. Did you forget to count these people?
who sings that?

@Iamcartmanxd its Jeanne-Claude. look them up. They're amazing artists. The orange sheets? Thats their work. So they pretty much made the main part of every clip in the commercial.
ps. idt they credit anyone with songs on any commercial. they just buy the rights.
