To bad it wasn't one of the world war 2 German SS divisions opposite the marines. It would have turned out much differently. I know wishful thinking and dreaming
@Herbymac0811 The marines today did not fight that battle, so why would I tell a marine today about it. Neidrig Untermensch, Moron. Enough said end of story.
USMC. This was one of the earliest battles that USA was involved in during WW1. The French and British wanted to retreat. USMC said go ahead and retreat. We are here to fight. Thaey suffered heavy casualties but eventually won the battle. This scared the hell out of the Germans. The Americans were fearless.
The Germans at belleau Wood thought they were being charged with machine guns in the initial assault. Not so, just marines with their rifles. That was their first indication that they were up against something they had yet seen before, the tenacity of the U.S. Marines.
One German private, one of 30 to remain out of 120 in his unit wrote home "we have marines opposite us, they are terribly reckless fellows".
This is where the name "Teufel Hunden" (Devil Dogs) was earned.
