No, the pope is not a Nazi. He was forced to join the youth program as a kid, and then deserted the army. He disagreed with the regime so strongly that he risked severe punishment in order to escape them. As a Jew, I have to question the morality of some of his decisions as Pope, especially lifting the excommunications of anti-semites, but I do not believe the man himself to be anti-semitic. He means well, I'm sure. I don't like him as much as John Paul II, but I certainly don't hate him either.

I just wanted to add - being in the Hitler Youth (boys) or "Union of German Girls"(Bund Deutscher Mädchen - BDM) was mandatory - some parents refused to, but this meant rendering oneself VERY suspicious and vulnerable to harassment by officials and authorities.

So reproaching to someone he was in HJ shows stunning lack of knowledge of what one is talking about.. the other day I say a former "Nazi" on a US evangelical program.
