#1 there is no CORRECT positioning except what feels right each individual and allows them to hit the middle or very near the middle of each note as no two peoples faces and lips are the same neither will their embouchure..
haha yeah man im diggin this 1st vid. i just started trumpet, i wanna learn to play like harry james, rex stewart, and roy elridge. thats the style i wanna learn. i was trying to get a high note myself and couldnt figure it out.. thank you doc and youtube.
I'm an 8th grader. I've been playing for 3 years now and I'm positive that I put too much pressure on my lips. I can hardly get to a high D. Can you help me?
I had the same problem as you did. Im a sophmore now, and I think I could help a little. I suggest you take your mouthpiece off and just when your sitting around watching tv or on youtube, just do some low to middle to high buzzes using a smaller amount of pressure then your used to, then practice the same when you put your mouthpiece on the trumpet. My band director advised me to do this, and now im playing first chair over juniors and seniors. It will help your tone as well. Hope this helps :)
a lot of the things he advocates are very controversial in
the trumpet world. Lip buzzing leading to good tone, lips bending inward, how "tight" the lips need to be,are all controversial in the trumpet world. Please supply a local private teacher with another student. Youtube will only help a tiny little bit, especially when the very basics of trumpeting (breathing), is not covered in the first video. You go from lip stuff, to high notes, etc, wtihout talking about breathing or mental picture
I'm sorry to say that I do not use lip trills- I usually use shakes or controlled shakes to give the appearance of lip trills- works almost the same for the sound if you do it right... But, I never mastered the lip trill... Sorry that I can't help you with that one.
If you have any other questions for me, please feel free to PM me- I'll help you with whatever I can.
A lip trill is just slurring between notes really fast, they are mostly used in jazz and big band but i have heard it with classical music as well, its pretty easy, its easier to do on high notes and as long as you get the sound you are looking for whatever you do to do it works even with the hand.
omg thank you so much, im first chair trumpet in band class, and im in fear of being challenged for my chair. i was a little worried because i wasnt hitting as high as i used to, but now im real tight and clear with my notes.
I'm glad the video managed to help you- that's what I hope to accomplish by managing to post videos from time to time... It makes me happy to know that it is actually helping.
lol yes it gets numb.....but once you get used to it its alright...is cuz.....your not used to using that muscle of your body lol......sooo its almost like if it was sore...or tired
I'm new on my trumpet so I don't really know how to buzz without a mouthpiece so if its not any trouble can you post a video on how to start buzzing without your mouthpiece because I'm an amateur and I would love to learn
if you know the technique, you can make your own exercises- I don't have time to make 100 different exercises to teach mastership of a horn- at least, if I'm not getting paid and I'm putting some information online for free... If I teach principles of something and you like it, learn from a qualified or certified teacher the methods you like. It's not my job to make sure that you're a wonderful musician iamthemoth. Please repost in a more civil manner.
my vibrato styles are natural lung/air vibrato and finger vibrato (moving the horn a little with the tips of the fingers)- I do do pitch bending, so I'll see what I can do for you (I'll still try to post some of both- if I can get it done)
Technically, no. Many teachers teach to play at the center, but there have been many exceptions including many professional musicians in the world. I am just trying to teach some lessons how I was taught by my teachers.
If you can get the buzz to sound good and clean, I'd say no matter where you do it, you should still be alright =).
P.S. our 2nd trumpet in jazz buzzes to the right as well- he's perfectly fine ;)
good feeling and trying his personnal way...i approuve it..don't forget freedom..
