  • this some fresh shit...i dont need to do my dreads like dat but thats cool

  • Great video ! Hope this helps me :)

  • Excellent demo! Well done

  • WOOOW NICE!!! finally i know how to make dreads by myself, , thanks!!

  • what the fuck!? how come i cant handle my dreads with a 1,25 hook , it effing keeps locking up inside and i need to apply force to get it through the dreadlock and you just do it like this . wtf man , really wtf :(

  • I find my loose hair slips out still, what shampoo do you suggest

  • @lolfake111 Dr. Bronners or any non residue shampoo / all purpose soap.

  • Great demonstration of how to catch the loose hair!

  • tvoji su napravljeni sa heklanjem ili kako?

  • I use a 0.6, hold the loose hair all over the dread and just go in and out like crazy, I think isotropy works well with dreads.

  • ughh, my dreads are so tight that most of the time i cant pull the hook out once ive pushed it in... making dreadlock maintence nearly impossible for me -.-

  • @TRDreads ive the same problem ... any solutions ?

  • @jackonmsn well that was 3 months ago, my dreads are now near perfect somehow with palmrolling & twisting & braiding as my only maintenence.

  • Wax does work it dosent lock it up or unlock it, it just lets the dread relax and get use to being locked up so it will stay tighter for longer

  • hey im trying to grow dreads and i heard ur not suppose to wash ur hair so i havent even wet it for about 3 weeks now..i kno its suppose to take a helava long time to dread..but should i rinse or wet my hair or scalp i got a two strand twists on my hair not back combed

  • @tanvo93 wrong, you should wash your hair but with shampoo that leaves no residue and stop conditioning. Clean hair dreads much better than greasy hair.

  • @tanvo93 wash your heair eveyr 3-5 days with bicarb [baking soda] 30grams to about 2.5litres. rince well, super clean :)

  • Great video! Its good to see a close up so that we get the idea of what you are doing. Thanks for posting!

  • thank you so much!

    This is the clearest video!

Now I finally know what im suposed to do, realy thanks! :)

  • Got it my first try just layin here. Excellent.

  • wax is ok in moderation. ask jonny clean and he can give you vids that he has done about removing wax for a debate

  • You make this look so easy, but I really can't get the hang of it - mirrors just completely screw me up

  • This was when they where about a month old? O.O Dayum, they look pretty tight. Nice work!

  • If you have one that's about 1mm you can just hold your dread tight and stab it in and out loads of times and it'll lock up like fuck :)

  • where do you buy that tool at

  • @hooooooters any arts and craft store like hobby lobby and sometimes walmart has them lol its called a crochet hook/crochet needle

  • Thanks so much finally a video where i can actually see whats going on, you dont know how much you helped me!

  • now i can fix my husbands dreads thanks

  • and my husband has a job hes the soul provider for my family so the thing about dreads and being jobless is so untrue

  • i really dont knwo what ppl are talking about how ppl that have dreads are jobless......i have dreadlocks like jason momoa and i work at olive garden as a server, so idk what ure talking about u cant get a job lmao

  • Yeah, people, DON'T use wax!!

The reason that dreads have such a bad reputation is because stupid people use wax. Wax is what makes them mouldy, smelly and dirty.

What are you all being so horrible to him ?!?!

  • Keep dreads WAX-LESS!

  • i have had locks and twisted others' for 12 yrs, and wax has some polarity that attracts water. When a dreadlock is damp overlong, it attracts fungus. snip a well waxed dread that's a year old or better, and see if there is not fungus. it looks like invasive white lint. liquid jojoba is a wax ester that resembles oil, & this is ok to use mixed w/tea tree oil + essentials. it takes all manner of ac vinegar, h2o2, water, tea tree, salt, washing, and TIME to remove fungus. Good luck ;)

  • Thaaaaaat was it what i found everywhere!!!!!! THX SOOO much :)

  • I find it much better to use the needle along the length of the dread, stab it through further down the dread and push it through the middle, exit where your bit of loose hair is. Give the bit of hair a quick rub/ball up the end to give it more friction so it doesn't slide out then pull it all the way through so it's just how it should sit in the dreadlock, with the end left in the middle of it not sticking out..

  • Do not use this method. It "strangles" the dread to death. As you can see there are little woven parts that you can see and thats because you are taking big chunks of hair and weaving them through the dread. This inhibits the dreading process in those areas. Instead use the stabbing method with the smallest possible crochet needle and pull in loose hairs just a few at a time.

  • I am a fairly new dreadhead, and have been curious about how the crotchet method works. thanks for the vid yo!!

  • yo dude

do you use the crochet needle for your roots aswel?

    cross motion?

  • nice dreads

  • thanks for the demo, my dreads will be bad ass in no time.

  • That is very good - I am happy for you and hope that you are right about never having to face an employer that would look at such hair and think negatively about you - costing you the job. I know it may not be fair, but you sound like an intelligent man and you know where I am coming from.

  • As for my original comment, I was not saying the person is filthy or disgusting as an individual, I was saying that about such hair that I have seen terribly matted and dirty and those who have told me that they use peanut butter and such to make the hair stick together. To me, that is filthy and nasty. It sounds as though you agree. Good luck in your future.

  • ur just as stupied as the person saying that if u really believe puttin peanut butter in ur hair to make it stick ur a genuine simp

  • gm0ney - thanks alot for calling me stupid. Actually if you do some research yourself, you will find people using the following to make dreads: toothpaste right now...Don't play scientist with your hair. You can really damage your scalp by experimenting with random house hold products trying to make dreads. peanut butter, toothpaste, eggs, polyurithane, gum, normal beeswax, honey, and molasses. That is what I was saying was gross and disgusting and I think Knatty and you would agree.

  • that info was cut and paste right off of a website on making dreads - and they say it is not a good way of doing it - but people still try it.

  • your brainwashed bitch

    fuck you i hate you

  • I have dreads and before I got them I asked my boss if it was okay and she was really excited for me to get them and then told me to get them. I have an AMAZING job as a sign writer, which includes car graphics. And I get paid to play on Photoshop and put vinyl on things.

I bet you work at Maccas.

  • Yeah that was sarcasm people. I was saying how I actually have dreadlocks and I HATE how people think their dirty and ill amount to nothing in life because of them. Its a hairstyle, that is all.

  • maintaining dreads with a crotchet hook has nothing to do with the thickness of your dreads nor does it make dreads look fake.

It is amazing how many people are so misinformed about locks.

Also, do not purchase over priced dreaheadhq products. Those people are ripoff artists and you can find or make everything they sell much cheaper.

  • That's funny, they said the same thing about your mum...

  • that looks like it would take forever

  • crocheted dreads look wack... the look fake like those dread hats... just let your dreads do their own thing.

  • you're right, people who maintain dreadlocks with crotchet have thin locks and their scalp looks like they're bald or smth, nothing beats good rolling :D

  • thats the dreadheadhq hook right?

  • ea b you can get the same thing at wal mart for like a buck i have 2

  • Really helpful video, everybody I talk to's got a different method for their dreads, but yours with the hook seems the best.

So where can I find a crochet hook? What kind of stores could you buy it from?

  • wal mart .. a dollar

  • muy bueno ya entendi

  • i wish i had you to do mine cause mine are sticking together everywhere cause i can care less to do it myself. too much work .blah, i have fingers everywhere

  • so basically to crochet do you just wrap the loose hair around the hook and pull it through the dread and keep repeating till its in there? oh and how to you look up new growth with the crochet hook?

  • Nice clear video. I'm planning to get dreads and studying up on everything I'm gonna need to know. Very helpful:-)

  • Thanks a lot! But what's size is that?

  • it's size 1.75, :)

  • im using 0.75

  • Thanks from Brazil!

  • thanks :D

  • get a rug/latch hook if you can

it has a small swing arm so you can pull it back through the dreads without grabbing anything from the dread itself, all you take is the stray hairs

  • i love you hayleen3

  • what kind of crochet needle is that? size too? I bought the smallest one I could find today but it doesnt work..maybe I got the method wrong I dont know..I could really use some help.

  • i bought the smallest one aswell. didn't seem to work at first, but i was kinda doing it wrong. with a smaller hook, you have to take less loose hairs. but it works. and actually looks less like you crocheted it

  • wow man this is an awesome video thanks for save my dreads(y)

  • muhahaha xD i got the same crochet hook xD

  • good for you XD

  • well its the on from my brother and .... its BROCKEN ahhh O.o ah wayne xD i go and buy a new one tommorrow :D

  • I love you man! You helped me alot! THANK YOU

  • first you do it all wrong, second you are wright wax is actually crap, third i can do this a lot faster and better. If you live in greece thessaloniki contact me and i will maintain or make you new dreads.new dread 3 euros and maintenance 1 euro

  • thx man, but this was when my locks were one month old and they're year and a half now.

  • I was afraid of latch-hooking and I have probably more ideal hair 4 lox than most (wavy+thick+Nappy) but after watching this I feel like a loser, Thanx. I use palm rollin but the sides always loosen up and don't look neat. Now Im gonna get one of those tools and make my lox sharper looking. thanx for his tutorial son. Happy Holiday'z from Harlem'z F1ne$t

  • so thats how you interlock hair?

  • not really...right now the person is jus basically getting some loose hair back to it's lock. but interlocking is really passing the hook through the new growth (roots) and passing the lock through the hole which the hook made.

  • thx

  • It really is time consuming, but it locks them up really well. Its a good investment of your time, and, I think its kinda fun haha. Happy dreadin!

  • you must have serious time because this looks like it takes 4ever

  • this is really neat i had no idea!!

  • learn if you stick the hook down the legth of the dreadand pull the losse hair, it does not make that braided look

  • did you not use wax on your dreads¿

ive had dreads for like 5 months, and i rewax then every week or 2 cuz they start falling apart and looking all scraggelly.

how long have u had yours for in this vid¿

  • no, i didn't use wax, u shouldn't use it either. my dreads are a month old in this vid, but i've had them for a year and a few months.

  • dank locks!!!!

  • Your locks are so beautiful!

    I started mine in july.

I've got bone straight hair though. :/

What problems have you experience with them?

  • alo aj mi reci koj sampon koristis? i ak znas koji su iz konzuma "free residue"? =)

  • WHERE DID U GET YA CROCHET HOOK FROM?

  • I think it should be noted that this method will be most effective for particular (straighter) hair types. Wax is actually far quicker and more effective for the proper afro hair types in my experience.

  • wax is not good in any hair type, it only sticks hair together and doesn't let it lock up normally.

  • I agree w/ you re: the wax. When people ask me how they should start locking I steer them away from it.

I'm black and I have kinky/curly hair. So, when I started my locks 15 years ago it was with twists and "soft" braids that i let mat naturally. For my fuzzy root growth i still do "soft" braiding (Take stray fuzz, split into two sections, take nearest lock as third section, and braid loosely--not as tightly as you'd see w/ african braids).

I'll try this crochet technique, though.

  • By the way, I agree with hayleen3 not topcat1357--I don't advocate wax.

And, any hairtype can make use of this technique--stick-straight to curly/arfo/kinky--to keep new growth neat.

Actually topcat1357, it's the opposite. It's usu. straight hair that "needs" wax. Curly hair doesn't need the "help" of wax.

  • i think actually it's more useful for straight hair types that need more time to properly knot together.

i use wax but i barely ever use it, and it's usually very minimal amounts

btw i have curly textured red hair

  • it's amazing how your roots look like that! how did it happen? what kind of hair texture did you have before you got dreadlocks?

  • i had straight hair.

  • The ONLY way to keep your dreads neat and tidy. Wax is an unecessary expenditure and makes dreads feel heavy and greasy.

  • sweet ;-D

  • U SUX!!!! XD

  • this is the way im taking care of my locks

  • jap thats a way to do it

    without the fkn wax...

but if you dont twist the hairs around the hook you wont get this flat hairparts or i dont know how to say it on the dreads -

just keep on hooking in all directions

but take care of your fingers ;-)

  • ooooh so this is how i have to do that..i havent seen my hairdresser how she did it so now i know :P

  • great video, clear to see and everything

  • exactly what i do! love it1

  • tanx a lot for this... and what do you do for the root when it grows ..how you dread it??

  • i don't do much, mayble a little crocheting like in the video, it mostly locks on it's own.

  • no homo but the hair is sexy

    im getting them myself

    rastafari

  • when you pull the hook out the lock, do you twist it in a clockwise manner. also what products would you reccomend for locks?

  • i twisted it to get the hair off the hook, doesn't matter which way i twisted it.

other than shampoo there are no products you should be using on your locks.

  • hell yeah! this is one of the best things ive done to my dreads,

    just say "no" to dr...............eadwax

  • i got my dreads yesterday and well they look cool i just have a question how often do u have to wax it?

  • um, you don't? never use wax. check out the site in the video description for more info on taking care of dreadlocks.

  • this is a stupid question i have dreds 8-11 now. they are still gettin worked on but, are dreads always gunna be a lil frizzy, coz that kinda idk how to sya this, but it hurts my feeling when i see mine a lil frizzy idk?

help reply to this somone!!!!! please

n i ordered wax(idk y) but i figured that wuld help them stay together n not frizz so bad?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!

  • nooo, don't wax them, wax's not gonna help them. better buy yourself a hook like in the video and do some crocheting.

  • oh.. I'm going to do dreads, but it looks very hard to fix them every day..

  • you won't be fixing them everyday don't worry.

  • This works great unless you surf. After pounding water for a few hours it pulls the loosies right out again. On the other hand the salt water gives you another type of dread that looks weathered but locked hard... except for those damn loosies.

  • cool

  • Yeah dreads hold better if u use a hook but it takes longer time to do them but in the end its really worth it.

  • cool....i want dreads!!!!!!!

  • i do something similar but i use a large needle instead of a hook. i've tried a hook but the way it would get caught in the dread was annoying to me.

  • hehe, yeah, that's a good way to maintain, too.

  • hey if i have same problem but on the ends of dreads is it ok if i put them inside in opposite direction

  • that's fine.

  • thanks! very usefull

    p.s. saying no to wax

  • glad to hear that!

  • yeah i know that, thanks.

the only reason id consider extensions is cos it took me agesss just to get my hair to like 5.5" my hair grows really slow!

  • how long would i have to grow my hair to get 'dreads' about 2-3 inches long?

and also can you put dread extensions into dreads that short? thanks.

  • you have to grow your hair to about 6-7 inches.

yes, then you can put dread extensions but i don't recommend cause it doesn't look natural and synthetic hair is not what dreadlocks are all about.

  • thats sweet

    im getting dreads

  • can you explain me how do you start the dread??or how do you make it gracias!!spaiNN

  • check out the site in the video info, there's everything you need to know about dreadlocks, and watch the video "truth about dreadlocks"

  • thanks!

    =)

  • wow i always tried to find a video thatwould show me how to do it my loose hair is like 5 inches long!!!! so know i can fix them thank you very much :)

  • Wow, your dreads are beautiful <3

Mine are pretty loose as I only got them a couple of months ago, I find that the hook tends to get caught in the dread and pulls out more hair than it pulls in. Never occurred to me to wrap the hair round the hook though, shall definitely try that.

  • you can get the needle for 1.49 at any beauty store.its where i bought 1 for my hubby.;)

  • ok. i'm from croatia so i don't know where to get it in US.

  • I agree. No wax!

I used wax in the first 4-5 month of my locks just to get them started. Then I found out the wonder of crotcheting.

However, some of my dreads är more like really, really complicated braid or something.

Well, No wax gives happier locks, less gooey pillow, and maybee most important, happier Girlfriend! :D

  • where do i order this tool from i like that

  • in any store with wool, or you can ask your elderlies if they have some ;)

  • THANXXXX!!!

  • Arigato gozaimaaaasu!

I read about this technique but couldn't for the life of me understand what the written instructions were trying to tell me to do. Muy helpful.

  • nice job

  • Freakin genius dude! I've been growing my locks for over 12 years [past my ass] and this has never crossed my mine. I've been using wax and having people do it for me cause they are to long for me to maintain myself. Wax makes it smell like mildew. With this method I can do them myself and not have freakin wax in my hair. Thanks for this vid...

  • you're welcome, great thing to hear from someome who had his locks for 12 yrs :)

  • This is by far the most useful thing i have yet to learn about taking care of my dreads!

    much thanks- Tobias

you should post any other ideas

  • you can all save 10 bucks if you just use a needle with a looped thread

  • the needle doesn't cost 10 bucks, it's cheaper

  • i would suggest you to use smaller hooks.. the smaller hooks would make the locks tighter

  • not really, smaller hooks don't pull hair so good..

  • fukin smart idea

  • Where can I get one of those hooks? I'm having that problem with my locks :)

  • in any store with wool, or you can ask your elderlies if they have some ;)

  • Where can I get one of those hooks? I'm having that problem with my locks :)

  • ive done that for the last 5hurs this day and i'm not even half finished^^

  • haha you don't have to do it all at once

  • you dont know my hair^^

  • no i don't xD

  • yeah, i was thinking of using my latch hook for that lol. (if anyone knows what that is...)

  • I know what a latch hook is...maybe a tiny one would work

  • mate im getting one of those in the morning foe sure ! nice one hepful video! :O)
