@IKeepItReal4U I think the more likely senario they coalese together and form a new planet, since the presence of Jupiter stopped them doing so in the first place..
Hahah that would be so cool if it was destroyed by another civilisation, then some escaped (who become our ancestors) and moved to earth and yeah...so on and so forth :P haha
@KurdstanPlanetarium Do you believe that Jupiter's gravity prohibited the asteroid belt from forming into a planet? Or do you think it was a fully formed planet that Jupiter could not save from comet impact? Or did the Martians just blow it up, heh. I wish the belt was the fifth planet in the system, because walking on Jupiter wouldn't work out so well.
@DysphemisticOptimist thanx for your interest...the current theory about the Asteroit belt is that its left over remains of the planetesimals that could not form a planet due to its proximity to Jupiter, so yes you are right jupiter does play the part here as it continuously perturbs their oribts and change them...others belive it was a planet and blew up for one reason or another...even some went to belive that was an inhabited planet at war and annahilated itself in a neuclear war...who knows?
If Jupiter were to disappear would the asteroids be pulled toward the sun?
