  • shamanta is dancing funny hahaha i love bdss

  • Sonia is sooo HOT!

  • Is it me or are their numbers getting smaller?

  • I don't think its you. The girls of the Indigo have more or less left, and a bunch of the cab dancers too. But I think they just hired a bunch of people.

  • where?

  • over there

  • over where?

  • you have issues. None of these girls have big bellies, and there is nothing wrong with a big belly, where do you think the term belly dance came from? Duh.

  • the term in french did not originate with sway backed big belly posture.

  • You obviously do not know where the term came from. The people who originated it didn't call it belly dancing. (Kind of an unfortunate twist of fate that the French choose that term, because it involves they whole body. )To it's eastern inventors, it was just dancing, and so a more educated English term is Eastern Dance.

  • And yes, Sonia is about as good as it gets, a true beauty.

  • The term isn't French. I believe the guy who coined it was named Saul Bloom, at one of the worlds fairs. Watch Amercian Belly Dancer, it talks about it.

  • Well of course a documentary called "American Belly Dancer" will say an American called it that name first! :)) As a matter of fact in early colonial documents the French used "danse du ventre". It is not an honour though, as the tem is both misleading and unfortunate. And the connotation of nudity, which was not yet there in oriental dancers before the Egyptian varieté theatres of the 30s and 40s, set the track for a bad image of the dance as a performance art.

  • Oriental dance is acceptable in the English (and French) language, and it means the same.. Actually in France people have been calling the dance oriental dance for a long time, it is largely the English speaking world that has stuck to the very unfortunate and slightly "tacky" term bellydance.

And yes, for people from the culture it is just dance - at parties you'd just dance and not so "let's bellydance".

  • Although I wonder how many just adverage American people would think of Bellydancing when you said 'Oriental Dance' and not of something from Japan or China and what is now thought of as the Orient. Sadly, I think we're just stuck with the term. We all just have to do our best as dancers to change people's minds.

  • ya I am aware of the difference in the denomination "Orient" and "oriental" between Continental Europe and the US... here "Orient" refers to Arab/Persian/Turkish cultures, China or Japan would be extreme oriental or rather "Asian"..

true the term sticks, and that will hardly be changed :)

  • The term came from a man at the Worlds Fair in the Victorian Era to try to get people to come see the belly dancers he had on stage.

  • miles copeland you are a thief

  • @cepillaolight11 Hey why is he a thief I wanted to buy something from his site

  • sonia is so beautiful

  • This is great. I only wish there was more! :)

  • ahp!! all the song ^^ is Ancient ruins

  • Yup... the first its ancient Ruins

  • hey does anybody knows the name of the very first song played on this video?

  • The name of the song is Ancient Ruins from Issam Houshan - Hugs!!

  • Sonia is definitely improving, I am noticing this.

  • Wow, their lives must be highly stressful, unsettled, not relaxing, un-nerving and their bodies must hurt very badly. After reading your post, I do feel sorry for them. As an Arab I do not agree with Miles and what he does with this BDSS, just not good at all. Their shows are boring to me. But when I watch them I will take all of the negitives into consideration

  • To get a look into their day to day life, you should watch the trailer "Break Europe". I'm considering going on the tour one day, but I don't know if I could handle the stress and constant travel.

  • don't watch them then!! If you dislike them so much why do you even bother looking?!

  • You know, if you can't say anything constructive, why bother saying anything at all? Just because I dislike a dancer or group of dancers doesn't mean I go out of my way to bash their technique. And for being an "Ethnic Arts Promoter", the only thing I've ever seen you do is badmouth everyone.

  • uhm no... Ethnic Arts Promotions may be harsh in words sometimes, but he has great taste and judgment of the dance. He criticizes mostly non Arab dancers for reasons that are obvious to anyone grown in the culture or knowledgeable on it from the "source" and not Westernized presentations of the dance and music in classes or from dvds as BDSS. They are not bad, but it is sad generations of young girls think this is IT whenit is NOT.

He gives praise to good Western dancers like Farhana or Sandra.

  • I agree with you totally!!!

    good comments!

  • w w w .youtube. com /watch?v=TfaRQFpna6M

  • The name of the song is ancient ruins

  • soniaa!♥

  • You are right, the BDSS is boring, tired and uninspiriing to the audience and bellydancers. They mindlessly go through memorized choreographies like they are so exhausted. No emotion, feeling or anything like artistic diversity that makes bellydancing so great and special. The dancers all look like clones too, no curves...

  • thank god someone thinks like me...lol

  • To me everything they do has this plastic perfection attached to it which is obviously very un-natural looking and very "barbiesque". I could never understand the point of an entire cabaret company doing the exact same thing in monotone. Though, for a working dancer, dancing in this company is obviously a lot better than the local hookah joint. I just think doing these routines night after night, week after week would be deadening to any dancers inspiration as an artist.

  • Exactly. I know I get tired of doing a certain choreography after performing it four or five times! Yet they do these hundreds of times, sometimes twice a day. They're on the road constantly, get very little sleep, have a minuscule social life and are under more stress than some of us could probbly imagine. And of course, it has a lot to do with how accepting and encouraging the audience is. When I've seen them perform (for a good audience), they look alive and happy!

  • Yes, these dancers have stamina! But even members of the company have said that there is a lack of creativity and experimentation in the choreography. The basic formula of BBSS revolves around Miles Copland's vision of making his team commercially viable in a mass market. Many people have asked why this company includes no traditional ME folk dancing. Read Miles Copeland's critique of folk dance in a Gilded Serpent letter to the editor 5-21-07.

  • Can anyone tell me the name of this song?

  • its on bdss vol. 4

  • I think they need more big girls :D

  • Name of the song!!Please!!!Thanks!!1111

  • its on bdss vol. 4

  • Ohhh we were dancing choreography with this song! It's too nice!!:D

  • sonia is so great, i love the way she moves.

  • I feel they lack the true essence & feeling for bellydancing which is at the core. It is very contrived & the dancers look bored. Jillina's robotic, overly choreographed performances are very predictable hence unentertaining. It lacks the real, natural energy of Middle Eastern bellydancing. There is no spontaneity. I really liked Dondi, she always looked like she was having a great time, she was natural. Wished to see more of her oriental pieces. The BDSS look bored, tired & exhausted.

  • I believe there is a good reason for that. They travel constantly, are always under pressure, some times perform more than once per day . . . even when they are not performing, they are rehearsing, coming up with new material, traveling, and trying to get everyday things done. I agree that sometimes they look tired, but that is part of the price that they pay for bringing this show to us, the viewers. As a performer, I can also say that if the crowd is tough, it's hard to be energetic.

  • Totally agree if there is no positive energy from the audience then it is hard to project energy as a performer.

  • EthnicArtsPromotions, thanks for explaining your view of BDSS in more detail. Now I understand where you're coming from a little better. Although I happen to like BDSS very much, I enjoyed reading your *specific* critiques of the dancing, because you obviously care deeply about the dance and the way it's presented. Hope you will continue to make comments that help us understand things from another point of view.

  • im glad eap made a constructive comment in the end; now in my opinion jillina is a master choreographer and she has her own troupe called the sahlala dancer and she made the bdss into her 2nd sahlala dancers they are all jillina clones jillina has signature moves that are very recognizable and i even saw the sahlala dancers use a bdss choreography jillina is great but shes being spread too thin and we're getting bored of the same thing

  • I agree. Overall, it's a good performance but it's hardly inspiring. These dancers are just going through one after another standard belly dance move without any emotion or story. I'm sure they can do much better than that.

  • I am an Arabic man you fool! lol.

This dancing still stinks, we are entitled to our opinions, we know what great bellydancing is.

    Brian al-rafic (EAP)

  • But WHY does it stink? What could the dancers do differently to improve their performance, in your opinion? I assume you know a thing or two about belly dance, so show us what you know. Some of us would enjoy hearing an intelligent critique from an Arab point of view.

But please don't call someone a fool just for disagreeing with you or giving you some constructive criticism. That's immature and it's very un-cool.

  • nombre del tema...

  • BDSSS SUCK SO BAD and the music they use is boring

  • EthnicArtsPromotion: you're not doing a very good job of promoting ethnic arts. Every comment I've seen from you here at YouTube is "BDSS SUCKS", and the only vids I've seen you comment on are BDSS vids.

As an objective observer, I have to tell you that it looks like sour grapes.

If you can't NOT post a BDSS-hate comment, at least critique the piece so it looks a bit less like jealousy and spite talking. Give folks something to think about when they're watching the video.

  • omg the line-up with the maya/bodywave was AWESOME!

  • does anybody have a vid from moria???

  • Moria is the best! Everyone will be hearing more about this flawless talent.

  • My computer can't find this song =(

Maybe someone could send it to me?

  • Could someone tell me the name of this nice song?

  • It's "Ancient Ruins". It's a cool song =)

  • And the artist? Can't find the song :(

  • Issam Houshan. I got it off my belly dance instructor.

  • Thanks =D

  • It's the second track on the Bellydance Superstars Vol. III CD (not on volume 4, as someone had noted earlier).

  • I LOVE seeing Tribal and Cabaret interpretations of the same choreo. The different levels and formations of the arms especially caught my eye. Thanks for posting this.
