The fact that a picnic causes ants to show up, and the ability to say that picnics dont cause ants, doesnt diminish the relationship between love and oxytosin. Deepak is just like every other wack job who obfuscates and demonstrates logical fallacy without regard to relevancy
In fact Chopra is right, what causes you to get to your destiny? the car pedal in your foot or your foot in the pedal. You see? There isn't a causal relation because the car is the experience of driving in your brain's molecules. It all makes sense now. Thanks, Deephack!
Shermer thinks understanding chemicals will help us do better. What an idiot. Nature already accomplished all of the things he wants to reduce, dissect, and put back together. Shermer's way of thinking leads to a world where we are controlled through chemicals, where the value of experience is dismissed. The whole F*&King point is lost Shermer, Harris. Bad for the world, but good for the materialists, many people are starting to adopt Shermer's pseudo-science.
Thanks for your sympathy, no sarcasm intended. But I believe that all human beings have the right to their religious freedoms. I also feel that Shermer/Harris misrepresent scientific understanding to support their anti-metaphysics very much in the same way they accuse the other side of doing it to support their metaphysics.
If you come with stupid shit about Shermer and Harris misrepresenting science that probably means you have a hidden agenda or you're a superstitious dorkie yourself
Why are you uptight and emotional? I said that Harris and Shermer misrepresent science to support their anti-metaphysics. I'm pretty much spot on. Of course, you obviously haven't the faintest idea of what that means, but you will figure it out if you think really hard. Never said anything about the other camp, that's a different issue.
@circusOFprecision Presumably when someone has had a stroke we should turn to Deepak rather than those who have studied the brain. If you think studying the brain is pseudo-science then why not dismiss modern medicine entirely? In fact, why not dismiss science altogether and let's all get together and dance around a fire in the hopes of changing the weather.
Your comment has nothing to do with reality. I'm not against science. I'm against using scientific naturalism like an atheist crutch, and then lecturing everyone else on what is logical and rational. Huge difference, one that your pathetic equivocation can't possibly hide.
@circusOFprecision If you wish to have that kind of debate then Deepak is hardly the one to put forward a decent case for it. It was Deepak's constant interruptions that really pissed me off as it made it difficult for there to be any progress. He simply didn't like the idea that scientific study of the brain could give valuable insights into differing states of mind. It could aid in learning meditation for instance.
Science has nothing to do with Gods? You are an artist at making statements that miss the point. It's like you are completely slave to your anti-theological compulsions, beyond all logic and reason.
I'm asking deep questions, legitimate questions. I expect answers, otherwise what is the point of doing science or philosophy, or anything for that matter? You on the other hand seem to dispense with the deep questions all together. That's fine. But you have no empirical evidence or rational basis for doing so. You can say that I am imagining things. But what am I imagining? Where is your evidence? You've got nothing for me, so I'll stick to my pursuits.
@circusOFprecision i think hitchens stated that as an atheist we have nothing to prove because we don't believe in things that do not provide evidence or have definite answers whether it may be a breakdown of chemicals or simple math - the ones who believe in god have something to prove, because it no different from trying to make Santa real and try to justify it with philosophic nonsense - taking words out of context to make knowledge seem ignorant.
I have no idea what you are trying to say here other than you want to assert skepticism as some kind of superior position to philosophy, which isn't coherent.
@circusOFprecision i thought i have seen ignorance but you sure do take the spot - how is believing that there is some supernatural being better than asking questions - why must you pretend there's something - better yet what about the other religions that claim that they are more right then yours ? are you a philosophy major ? lol that may explain why
More incoherent and nonsensical garble. Here is a question: why must you pretend there is NOT something? What about your own religious beliefs, your atheism, your anti-metaphysical metaphysics, your incoherent philosophy that you label as non-philosophy. When you exalt skepticism to a higher level than the basis of logic and rationale itself (philosophy), you by definition become irrational.
Deepak Chopra is an idiot. He truly wants to believe that consciousness is separate from the brain. This has been thoroughly debunked with neuroscience, proving the different functions of the mind and personality are centered in different parts of the brain. There is no proof, however, of a supernatural consciousness that uses your brain as a mere tool for communication. This man should be laughed off of the stage for touting woo as fact.
@advantage73 although I fully agree with Shermer and Harris's points, what I see here is Deepak being so triggered by the disrespectful labeling of what he does as "woo-woo" that he does the same back at them. I wish they hadn't called what he does woo-woo.. It created such a disconnection for a successful dialogue.
I love how when Michael mentions a particular chemical in the brain and what it does, Deepak and crazy lady make faces like *he's* the one speaking gibberish.
The BIGGEST PROBLEM on that stage IS the EGO and COMPETITION
The MOST IMPORTANT topics that need to be discussed are COMPASSION, LOVE, HEART(SPIRIT), EMOTIONS, AND UNDERSTANDING and how to develop all of these in the way we need to live a peaceful life
Ancient Zen saying: "THE MOMENT YOU SPEAK OF A THING YOU MISS THE MARK"
The Ultimate Truth or Reality is one which brings about understanding and compassion and the realization that we all "know not what we do"
@sidewinderxx It's not that simple. It is not complete crap. What they say has some basis. Yes, some of it is just some "woo woo" but at the same time some of it is not. And yes, Deepak does have too much ego and would be much more efficient if he had more self control but I have read and do understand many of his teachings but he definitely needs to meditate some more and work on himself a bit
@phiaman what they say is INTERPRETIVE but they present it as FACTUAL, thereby making BOATLOADS OF MONEY from the credulous, and this deception gives me license to label it complete crap, regardless of how viable their interpretations are.
@phiaman what they say is INTERPRETIVE but they present it as FACTUAL, thereby making BOATLOADS OF MONEY from the credulous, and this deception gives me license to label it complete crap, regardless of how viable their interpretations are.
@phiaman It's curious that the one on the stage who most supports your view (which I don't entirely disagree with) and speaks about raising compassion is Deepak, yet he is the least tolerant ego up there. When Harris and Shermer are challenged they respond calmly, despite being thoroughly exasperated by the nonsense coming out of Deepak. Their legitimate challenges to Deepak make him talk loudly, talk over people and prod the host like a petulant child. He's a fraud.
@tecciztucatl A fraud is a bit dramatic. I would say all of the ones on stage have heart inside of them they just have much more to learn. And you are completely right, Deepak, the one that speaks about raising compassion the most, does talk more loudly and seems to be one of the most least understanding. He definitely needs to do some reflection and much more meditation. WE ALL DO!!!
@phiaman I could be wrong but while working my way through a couple of talks he's given to those who already accept his ideas I found his use of scientific terminology far more disingenuous than in this discussion. I'm not a scientist but I am reasonably scientifically literate and I've heard him say things that he must know are not true in the context he's using them, not as a trained MD.
Scientists are so stupid. If I put a twinkie in their hand, they'd run some tests in a lab and say that it's just sugar, gelatin, flour, etc. That's great, mr. scientist. But how the fuck did the twinkie get there?! They couldn't tell me.
@peteagassi Cool story, bro'. But in the real world, the scientist would tell you that you put the twinkie in their hand, that's how it got there. Your story its answer within it.
Also, if a scientist doesn't know an answer, it just doesn't follow that Deepak or some religious cleric or holy book must know more. The clerics and holy books just make shit up when they're ignorant, a good scientist says "I don't know."
If you prefer the clerics and holy books, that's your problem and your loss.
You only have to spend an hour reading Jiddu Krishnamurti or the Buddha teachings to realise empirical testing is not the only method to understanding truth, there is also impersonal direct observation, this is something the west/rational mind cannot understand and this mind hates that because it doesn't like to think there is a higher understanding than it. In fact the empirical paradigm is in tiself a belief, it's a belief that works within a limited field.
It's funny that the rationalists don't understand what the post-rationalists are saying, so they have to resort to insults inorder to protect their intellectual identities.
@teamhumanity Sounds to me as though they're just talking past each other. Clearly there are 2 totally different discussions going on here. Deepak and his colleague are debating sheer spirituality. Just like most religious types, they'd swear that there is some ulterior purpose for our existence as well as that of the universe. Until this is validated and verified beyond personal feelings, emotions and experiences.... then science is still man's best method of divulging reality from fantasy.
ON the record, I'm an atheist... Also, Deepak always talks about transcendence consciousness.... but, never provides any proof for it.. Just repeats it over and over again.
The best explanation for our interconnected relationship with the cosmos is the following: we have found DNA in meteorites.. And testing revealed adenine and guanine were present which are the two FUNDAMENTAL components of DNA called nucleobases. Specifically, CM2 meteorites. So, Yes we are connected with our cosmos scientifically, but to say some intelligent-being has done this? Well, you need empirical evidence to push for that Mr. Chopra, and you did not provide that. This life is it.
Explaining spirituality to Americans is like explaining to you fuckin idiots why America isn't number one. You guys wont understand what Deepak has to say because you fuckin idiots draw pleasure from only from the physical realm. Explains why you idiots are drowning in debt, your kids are shooting up your schools, all while yelling "YEAHH AMERICA #1". Just because something is not physical/tangible doesn't mean there isn't a real experience. But nobody here would even begin to understand that.
@merajoga I'm not american but I think your argument is completely wrong; America is where Deepak C has done his millions by telling ignorants his BS and they believe it..America is the place that if you have a ridiculous story, be sure that there will be hundreds if not thaousands of people that will believe it, and then you'll get rich...Harris & Shermer are not saying that there are no experiences, they are only saying that you don't have to believe all the BS from DC to understand it!!!!
@merajoga Ah, usual tactic. When people call the spiritualists out on their bullshit, the spiritualists just scoff and say, "You just don't understand."
Or maybe you guys just suck at explaining it. Or, and here's an idea, you guys are wrong. That's possible too.
@BigLundi or heres an explanation, maybe there are ACTUALLY things that people may not understand. IE- when not so long ago as we misunderstood the pathogenesis of cancer. You are assuming you know everything, and claiming other things as bullshit, but if I were the most highly educated man in cancer research what he thought the genesis of cancer was 20 years ago, he would have been completely wrong. Lesson: stfu and stay open minded and dont degrade. Ps- lose some weight.
@merajoga Oh there are PLENTY of things people, and I, don't understand. However there's nothing to suggest these things are in any way supernatural, or even spiritual.
Don't feel like losing weight, considering the vast majority of my weight is muscle. Step mom's a gym trainer. :)
Sorry, but you have no idea what it means to be open minded.
You should watch Qualia Soup's video on open mindedness.
You can tell who is more interested in having a discussion and who is more interested in grandstanding by asking a simple question: which person, Harris or Chopra, spends more time looking at the crowd when he speaks?
Chopra isn't used to dealing with a rational argument on its face; he's used to a captive, self-selected audience that generally agrees with him.
once again the answer is in the question....this brain crap has nothing to do with the question... deep down, nobody wants that "holy shit" moment when you know you can die at any time and you're teetering on heaven or hell. so you say to yourself its better to go along with believing then to be left behind. I know it's not that black and white but you know its true.
Wow. I skimmed through the first 10 pages of comments and atleast 75-80% of them are hateful and disrespectful and self righteous in one way or another. If you have nothing good to say then do not say it. Have you taken nothing away from this awesome discussion thus far? That being said, I think discussions like these are so great and beneficial for all types of people around the world and we need younger generations (such as myself) to pay attention to these more often opposed to other things.
@youngs1ncere "Thanks for trolling." Ah, the classic response from someone who can't defend a statement. Well done.
Its namby pambys like you that have given religion a free ride for so long. Guess what? I don't have anything good to say about religion or deepak and the other chump, but i'm still going to fucking say it. Get over it.
I'm sorry to say it, but Sam Harris is the only one who makes any sense here most of the time. Obviously Chopra and Houston are totally out to lunch, but what WAS all that gibberish about oxytocin from Shermer?
Damn... Deepak is absolutely lost in his own bs. He's made up his mind and that's it. He's twisting and turning and behaving like a spoiled child to get his way. He really is the too-proud and egocentric student in a classroom with a patient and smart teacher.
its so funny to watch Deepak how afraid he is when sam is about to speak...because he knows his eloquence owns him with calm and reason no spiritual mumbojumbo can argue with.
H2O is not the experience of drinking water. No shit. What water is is something different to the EXPERIENCE of drinking water, no one is saying different.
Sam and Michael have not proven ANYTHING they have said with science. Michael, you CANT explain subjective experiences with your pseudo science crap. Deepak and Jeanette are just as confused.

Why are you uptight and emotional? I said that Harris and Shermer misrepresent science to support their anti-metaphysics. I'm pretty much spot on. @circusOFprecision Presumably when someone has had a stroke we should turn to Deepak rather than those who have studied the brain. If you think studying the brain is pseudo-science then why not dismiss modern medicine entirely? In fact, why not dismiss science altogether and let's all get together and dance around a fire in the hopes of changing the weather.
ritchloui 3 months ago
@ritchloui
Your comment has nothing to do with reality. I'm not against science. I'm against using scientific naturalism like an atheist crutch, and then lecturing everyone else on what is logical and rational. Huge difference, one that your pathetic equivocation can't possibly hide.
circusOFprecision 3 months ago
@circusOFprecision If you wish to have that kind of debate then Deepak is hardly the one to put forward a decent case for it. It was Deepak's constant interruptions that really pissed me off as it made it difficult for there to be any progress. He simply didn't like the idea that scientific study of the brain could give valuable insights into differing states of mind. It could aid in learning meditation for instance.

Science has nothing to do with gods.
You can believe in any you like.
Science doesn't indicate magic, supernatural beings.
Not in the least.

I'm just trying to make you aware of the fact that you don't have to be angry.
Your superstition has no relevence in reality--its a personal thing that exists only in your mind.
You know evolutl=ion happens.
Don't be angry just becuse there is no room for magic in the way the particles play out--the magic is in your mind.
Isn't that good enough for you?
odinata 3 months ago
@odinata
You've got nothing for me, so I'll stick to my pursuits.
circusOFprecision 3 months ago

For what?
What are you demanding?
That I prove their are no purple unicorns?
You are the one lacking evidence and a rational basis.

odinata 3 months ago
@circusOFprecision i think hitchens stated that as an atheist we have nothing to prove because we don't believe in things that do not provide evidence or have definite answers whether it may be a breakdown of chemicals or simple math - the ones who believe in god have something to prove, because it no different from trying to make Santa real and try to justify it with philosophic nonsense - taking words out of context to make knowledge seem ignorant.

I have no idea what you are trying to say here other than you want to assert skepticism as some kind of superior position to philosophy, which isn't coherent.
circusOFprecision 2 months ago
@circusOFprecision i thought i have seen ignorance but you sure do take the spot - how is believing that there is some supernatural being better than asking questions - why must you pretend there's something - better yet what about the other religions that claim that they are more right then yours ? are you a philosophy major ? lol that may explain why
9058588583 2 months ago
@9058588583

The Ultimate Truth or Reality is one which brings about understanding and compassion and the realization that we all "know not what we do"
No ONE is smarter than us ALL
phiaman 6 months ago
@phiaman no, the biggest problem is that the clowns on the right are spouting complete crap
sidewinderxx 5 months ago
@sidewinderxx It's not that simple. It is not complete crap. What they say has some basis. Yes, some of it is just some "woo woo" but at the same time some of it is not. And yes, Deepak does have too much ego and would be much more efficient if he had more self control but I have read and do understand many of his teachings but he definitely needs to meditate some more and work on himself a bit
phiaman 5 months ago

He's a fraud.
tecciztucatl 5 months ago in playlist More videos from AtheistMediaBlog 2
@tecciztucatl A fraud is a bit dramatic. I would say all of the ones on stage have heart inside of them they just have much more to learn. And you are completely right, Deepak, the one that speaks about raising compassion the most, does talk more loudly and seems to be one of the most least understanding. He definitely needs to do some reflection and much more meditation. WE ALL DO!!!
phiaman 5 months ago
@phiaman I could be wrong but while working my way through a couple of talks he's given to those who already accept his ideas I found his use of scientific terminology far more disingenuous than in this discussion. I'm not a scientist but I am reasonably scientifically literate and I've heard him say things that he must know are not true in the context he's using them, not as a trained MD.

Scientists are so stupid. If I put a twinkie in their hand, they'd run some tests in a lab and say that it's just sugar, gelatin, flour, etc. That's great, mr. scientist. But how the fuck did the twinkie get there?! They couldn't tell me.
peteagassi 6 months ago

In fact the empirical paradigm is in tiself a belief, it's a belief that works within a limited field.

teamhumanity 6 months ago
@teamhumanity Sounds to me as though they're just talking past each other. Clearly there are 2 totally different discussions going on here. Deepak and his colleague are debating sheer spirituality. Just like most religious types, they'd swear that there is some ulterior purpose for our existence as well as that of the universe. Until this is validated and verified beyond personal feelings, emotions and experiences.... then science is still man's best method of divulging reality from fantasy.

This life is it.

merajoga 7 months ago
@merajoga I'm not american but I think your argument is completely wrong; America is where Deepak C has done his millions by telling ignorants his BS and they believe it..America is the place that if you have a ridiculous story, be sure that there will be hundreds if not thaousands of people that will believe it, and then you'll get rich...Harris & Shermer are not saying that there are no experiences, they are only saying that you don't have to believe all the BS from DC to understand it!!!!
eap8317 6 months ago
@merajoga Ah, usual tactic. When people call the spiritualists out on their bullshit, the spiritualists just scoff and say, "You just don't understand."
Or maybe you guys just suck at explaining it. Or, and here's an idea, you guys are wrong. That's possible too.
BigLundi 6 months ago 2
@BigLundi or heres an explanation, maybe there are ACTUALLY things that people may not understand. IE- when not so long ago as we misunderstood the pathogenesis of cancer. You are assuming you know everything, and claiming other things as bullshit, but if I were the most highly educated man in cancer research what he thought the genesis of cancer was 20 years ago, he would have been completely wrong. Lesson: stfu and stay open minded and dont degrade. Ps- lose some weight.
