Thanks for posting this, I really enjoyed his performance on stage, I certainly don't think Tetley or he made a mistake or that it was "awful." He was trying to experiment with other forms of dance, you have to give him credit for having the courage and also he revealed a deep vulnerability in this role. The only thing disconcerning was the shaking tower and isolation, but it was absolutely fascinating and stands as an example of his ambidexterity and versatility .
you could save your time not reading it for ex .if you don't know who is cristopher bruce go on google.and please save also your time not writing again .regards.
@Isawthemwhen may be dear but saw ballet for all my life and nureyev many many times, and pierrot lunaire directly with the dancer who created the role,so.......
SAW MANY TIMES THIS PIECE IN LONDON DUE RAMBERT BALLET,ALWAYS FAUND IT AWFUL.NUREYEV IS FAR WORST THAN CHRISTOPHER BRUCE IN IT ,SO DOUBLE AWFUL.LOVED RUDY SO MUCH ,WHAT'S A PITY LOST TIME WITH THIS JUNCK.
This is interesting to see Nureyev in this--the "Nureyev and friends season," it is so out-there and animated. Rudolph really coveted this role, according to what I have read. Tetley didn't think it was right for him at first. Rudolph was said to have identified with the protagonist..he is soaking in moonlight, the tower is his home..he protects it with innocence...later he is robbed, they take his personality and all his whiteness disappears...loses his innocence..It's like when he moved west.
@MissPhantasmogoria HaHa I don't know for sure-- but perhaps it is a matter of perspective. Was he not young and inexperienced? Was the ballet he learned in Russia--- that he would not change early on in Paris not innocent and pure? I can imagine that he perhaps saw himself as very innocent and naive when he defected because he was so vulnerable at that point. But maybe in Russia they see him differently...
